Running Past The Trees: Facing Childhood And Adolescence In Iowa's Cedar Valley, University Of Northern Iowa. Two-Dimensional Concepts (Spring 2017).

Running Past the Trees Project

This anthology is the result of a service-learning project supported by The Facing Project. Students enrolled in Two-Dimensional Concepts, a foundations art course at the University of Northern Iowa, and K-12 authors at the Waterloo Writing Project collaborated over the course of a semester through shared stories, conversations, and illustrations. The authors provided stories of their experiences and memories growing up in the Cedar Valley and were partnered with first year UNI art students who took inspiration from the authors' writings to create accompanying illustrations.

The Romance That Didn’T Last: An Analysis Of Language In Chrétien De Troyes Le Chevalier De La Charette, Elizabeth F. Pafford Apr 2017

The Romance That Didn’T Last: An Analysis Of Language In Chrétien De Troyes Le Chevalier De La Charette, Elizabeth F. Pafford

Masters Theses

Since the appearance of King Arthur in Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Historia Regum Britanniae, the legend of Arthur and his knights has continually expanded and evolved. The story of the affair between Lancelot and Guinevere began with Chrétien de Troyes and has since been embellished by countless authors, such as Malory, who view it as causing the tragic downfall of Camelot and the Knights of the Round Table.

Le Chevalier de la Charette shows a seemingly satirical depiction of courtly love. Lancelot is humiliated and shamed in the name of Love and willingly accepts it. However, this reading goes against …

Substrato Para Devaneios, Louise Deroualle Apr 2017

Substrato Para Devaneios, Louise Deroualle

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

Clay is my substrato para devaneios, my foundation for daydreams. Clay is earth, a humble, common material that represents the possibility of growth and thus, life. As my substrato, clay gives me stability and nourishes me, allowing me to communicate with and relate to the world. It has the ability to register touch and gesture; it records a moment in time.

My work is an abstracted representation of me: my identity, the way in which I relate to others and understand the environment I am in. I use ceramic materials to create formal abstractions that reveal different facets—physical, experiential, emotional—of …

The Origins And Identity Of Roman Mithraism, Charles R. Hill Apr 2017

The Origins And Identity Of Roman Mithraism, Charles R. Hill

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

This thesis is a reassessment of scholarship concerning the origins of the cult mysteries of Mithraism in its Roman form during the Imperial Period. While much has been published in the debate over the cult’s true origins, we are still left without a satisfactory answer. The present work is an attempt to reconcile some of the arguments posed in the 19th and early 20th centuries with those of the later 20th and 21st centuries, focusing mostly on the cult’s art and iconography in Mithraea, the central spaces of Mithraic worship. First will be a summary of …

Domestic Curiosities, Larry D. Buller Apr 2017

Domestic Curiosities, Larry D. Buller

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

My art at first glance suggests the domestic, ornamental nature of ceramic objects, but upon closer inspection one discovers a showy, transgressive content that is conceptualized around issues of gay sexuality, the phallus and fetish objects. I create decorative sculptures that resonate with my varied experiences as a gay man. Clay with its endless possibilities for form and surface, is the ideal medium for my subversive intentions. It allows me to blend the rich historical language of ceramic art with the low-brow, and in my case, kitsch nature of craft that one might find in second hand stores. I invite …

Deconstructing Ideas Of Utility Through The Making Of Ceramic Vessels, Iren Tete Apr 2017

Deconstructing Ideas Of Utility Through The Making Of Ceramic Vessels, Iren Tete

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

My work is a translation of memories, experiences, and languages into shapes, colors, and symbols. The fragmented relationship with my cultural identity is easier to deconstruct when paired down to an exploration of process, form, and color. Ideas of containment, strength, and beauty are translated into line, form, and color. A color palette that is predominantly white and black represents my cultural dichotomy. Addressing a perpetual, yet elusive, quest for balance, these colors coexist within forms but are never seamlessly integrated.

I address dichotomies directly through process. Through pinching, coiling, slab-building, and wheelthrowing I vacillate between the need for structure …

Ephemeral Permanence, Emily Reason Apr 2017

Ephemeral Permanence, Emily Reason

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

Traditional pottery forms and images of flora, fauna and rural architecture in Ephemeral Permanence awaken memory through the sensations and associations they suggest. These works are memorials to beauty, craft, culture and nature. I capture what is fleeting, make it tangible and endow it with longevity. Graceful movement paired with an element of danger reveals the complicated nature of beauty, waning culture is depicted with meticulous stability to conjure nostalgia, and form and surface celebrate craft and beauty. Icons of nature and culture in this work play a metaphoric role and serve to ignite memories.

I am fascinated with the …

Whitetail, Michael Steven Villarreal Apr 2017

Whitetail, Michael Steven Villarreal

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

When I was growing up, both my parents worked at a U-Haul from which they brought home discarded objects to the house my dad built with his own hands. This home, interior and exterior, was not designed to fit an explicit aesthetic, but all aspects of the house were in harmony and completed by the objects brought into each space. The house became a repository for abandoned domestic American culture— beds, window blinds, couches, appliances, and other products made it into the home in irregular but frequent intervals. For me, each item was an opportunity to have something new to …

Pause, Bryon Hartley Apr 2017

Pause, Bryon Hartley

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

Creating art honors the traditions of making by hand and presents an arena where I am the designer and the maker. When I make, I hunt myself down; I pursue that moment when a piece is finished and I can pause.

The making process totally consumes me, hours are spent planning, sketching, fabricating, jig building and mold making. I reach the point of exhaustion trying to figure out positive and negative space, a faultless line, curve, or form. Sleep is longed for, but I drive on. I am chasing perfection and once it is reached, I am at peace. It …

Object Landscape, Stuart B. Gair Apr 2017

Object Landscape, Stuart B. Gair

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

The ceramic objects I create possess a particular buoyant volume and subtle organic surface variation that enable each piece to stand-alone and yet to allure the viewer in for closer examination. A particular articulation of each form creates an aesthetic that allows the object to occupy a space in such a way that evokes a sense of balance and harmony with a minimal domestic setting. Interests in historical forms that possess a full sense of volume provide a framework me to explore proportion, line, edge, silhouette, and transitions. I pare down these qualities to their true essence while still evoking …

Parks, People, And Property Values: The Changing Role Of Green Spaces In Antebellum Manhattan, Catherine Mcneur Apr 2017

Parks, People, And Property Values: The Changing Role Of Green Spaces In Antebellum Manhattan, Catherine Mcneur

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

The role that parks played in Manhattan changed dramatically during the antebellum period. Originally dismissed as unnecessary on an island embraced by rivers, parks became a tool for real estate development and gentrification in the 1830s. By the 1850s, politicians, journalists, and landscape architects believed Central Park could be a social salve for a city with rising crime rates, increasingly visible poverty, and deepening class divisions. While many factors (public health, the psychological need for parks, and property values) would remain the same, the changing social conversation showed how ideas of public space were transforming, in rhetoric if not reality.

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The Model Minority Myths: Racism And Sexism Against Asian-American Community, Yingda Guo 17 Apr 2017

The Model Minority Myths: Racism And Sexism Against Asian-American Community, Yingda Guo 17

Honor Scholar Theses

This project aims to investigate the negative influences of the model minority stereotypes to Asian Americans. The model minority myth is the idea that members from a minority group with Asian heritages are considered to achieve a higher degree of educational and socioeconomic success than the average population. Asian Americans are usually perceived as model minorities who achieve high educational and socioeconomic success without many negative experiences in the U.S. However, a closer examination of the model minority myth indicates that this idea is quite generalized and misleading, which cannot stand for the diversity and complexity of Asian American experiences. …

Identifying Impressions Of Baba Yaga: Navigating The Uses Of Attachment And Wonder On Soviet And American Television, M. Armknecht, J. T. Rudy, Sibelan E.S. Forrester Apr 2017

Identifying Impressions Of Baba Yaga: Navigating The Uses Of Attachment And Wonder On Soviet And American Television, M. Armknecht, J. T. Rudy, Sibelan E.S. Forrester

Russian Faculty Works

The rise of Baba Yaga on international television provides an excellent case study for analyzing viewing practices associated with identification and allegiance. In analyzing Baba Yaga’s presence on Soviet and American television, we argue that viewing wonder tales leads to deep and lasting identification, attachment, and allegiance. Baba Yaga’s presence and popularity on Russian and American television allows us to explore how forming such deep impressions of a traditional character on television can provide trans-cultural viewers with tools to navigate between imagination and reality, thus helping them to better understand the ambiguities of life, including transnational cultural politics.
