Roasted: Coffee, Insult, Rhetoric, David Pharis Gifford
Roasted: Coffee, Insult, Rhetoric, David Pharis Gifford
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
While insult has been a frequent topic for rhetorical study in the past, little if any work has gone toward the formation of a systematic theory of insult. Karina Korostelina has proposed a theory of intergroup identity insults, which appears promising from a socio-cultural perspective. However, her theory does not address the particularly rhetorical characteristics of insults, preferring instead to analyze them with reference to their socio-historic context. While her theory proves sound under scrutiny, it does little to shed light on pejorative rhetoric as rhetoric.
In what follows, I would like to propose certain characteristics of pejorative rhetoric that …
Push To Pray: A Conceptual Framework For Significant Change In Prayer Frequency In One Church, Charles Alexander Elliott
Push To Pray: A Conceptual Framework For Significant Change In Prayer Frequency In One Church, Charles Alexander Elliott
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In recent years, an increasing amount of research has been conducted on the topic of personal spiritual practices, such as prayer. Fewer studies have been conducted on reasons for changes in the frequency of such practices within the church. Those that have addressed church behavior have most often measured attendance and membership. It is the goal of this study to conceptualize potential causes for changes in personal prayer practice at one church. A yearlong marketing campaign was used to help increase church attenders’ frequency of the personal spiritual practice of prayer. Two cross-sectional studies were conducted one-year apart and revealed …
The Southern Baptist Convention “Crisis” In Context: Southern Baptist Conservatism And The Rise Of The Religious Right, Austin R. Biggs
The Southern Baptist Convention “Crisis” In Context: Southern Baptist Conservatism And The Rise Of The Religious Right, Austin R. Biggs
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
From the late 1970s through the early 1990s, a minority conservative faction took over the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). This project seeks to answer the questions of how a fringe minority within the nation’s largest Protestant denomination could undertake such a feat and why they chose to do so. The framework through which this work analyzes these questions is one of competing worldviews that emerged within the SBC in response to decades of societal shifts and denominational transformations in the post-World War II era. To place the events of the Southern Baptist “crisis” within this framework, this study seeks to …
Singular They: The Best Epicene Pronoun, Brittney Grubber
Singular They: The Best Epicene Pronoun, Brittney Grubber
Student Research Conference Select Presentations
The English language does not possess a third person epicene pronoun, and speakers must fill the gap, which they do most commonly with "they". Scholars understand the implications of a gender neutral pronoun for non-binary persons, but besides linguists, they do not thoroughly examine grammatical reasons for the resistance to new pronouns. This paper addresses the grammatical issues and options available to the language, including the strengths and weaknesses of "they." Even with minor faults, "they" is widely used in both spoken and written English and should be adopted by Standard English.

2017 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity – Documents
According to Freud, “the idea of being buried alive by mistake is the most uncanny thing of all” (10). He vividly describes a fear many people cannot grasp because it is too abstract to think about even though death is the indisputable consequence of being alive. The difference is, however, that we are consciously living through our own demise, being aware that death is inevitable and at hand, which rightly depicts one of the most frightening situations a human being can experience. Therefore, human beings desperately attempt to prevent death by trying to cheat it and even avoid it all …

Body Consciousness: The Effects Of Posture On Musicians’ Performance Anxiety, Christina Farley
2017 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity – Documents
The primary research question of this quasi-experimental mixed methods study investigated the effects of positive (superman) and negative (slumped) body postures on students’ individual perceptions of their performance anxiety in three settings: in front of a studio professor, in front of peers, and in a private practice session. This study took place in two phases. Phase one consisted of a 14-question survey completed by 40 music education majors. Phase two included six participants that met with the researcher individually twice for each setting. Each participant followed the same timeline when completing the sessions: pre-session questionnaire, three-minute body posture (either the …
Incarcerated Transported And Bound: Deference, Resistance, And Assimilation, Constructing Community Among Transported Convicts From Britain To The Chesapeake 1739-1776, Michael Bradley
2017 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity – Documents
From June 8, 1744, through July 9, 1745, Ordinary’s Accounts of London’s condemned reported on a series of individuals who met a swift demise at the end of a rope at Tyburn Square, London’s execution site. Out of the countless that were hanged, the lives of ten criminals who formed an interconnected community are illuminated. They were a subset of a larger network of at least thirty criminals who engaged in thefts, robberies, prostitution, fencing of goods, and overindulgence of intoxicating spirits across London.

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
The Joseph Smith Papers Project has revolutionized the way that historians and educators can study and teach the life of the LDS Church’s first prophet. The fourth volume of the Documents series provides introductions and transcripts of its documents to help readers better understand each source. Documents, Volume 4 contains several important documents produced between April 1834–September 1835, including a sales receipt for the purchase of Egyptian artifacts that included the Book of Abraham, early documents related to the publication of the Book of Commandments (Doctrine and Covenants), and the promise of an endowment of power in the Kirtland Temple. …

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
The book of Jarom is a short chapter, consisting of only fifteen verses, that nonetheless manages to summarize the affairs of the Nephites over an approximately forty-year period. In the midst of his outline of the current Nephite status quo, Jarom makes mention of the religious climate of the time: “Wherefore, the prophets, and the priests, and the teachers, did labor diligently, exhorting with all long-suffering the people to diligence; teaching the law of Moses, and the intent for which it was given; persuading them to look forward unto the Messiah, and believe in him to come as though he …

Pluralism And Religious Education In Bali: How Lack Of Implementation Of Educational Reform Threatens Indonesian Identity In The System Used To Construct It, Nikolai O. Birch
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Indonesia’s education system was developed with the construction of the Indonesian as a cohesive people in mind. In doing so, the system adopted the practice of mandatory religious education as a means of developing the character of the Indonesian student through religion, a component imperative to the nation’s statehood. In the years and decades following, the education system, and subsequently its program of religious education, has been reformed and changed many times. This research attempts to look at how and why this changed system has struggled to implement these changes in the classroom, and why pluralism has been included in …

Munnar Plantation Strike, 2015: A Case Study Of Keralan Female Tea Workers’ Fight For Justice, Shoshana Levy
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
In the southern state of Kerala, tea leaf pickers are nearly all women. They work 14 hour days, six days a week, rain or shine. What’s more, they earn the lowest minimum daily wage of any sector in the state, bringing home a meager average of Rs. 231 a day. With women constituting more than half of the workforce on tea plantations across India it is becoming increasingly crucial to understand the challenged, yet integral role they play. Through a case study of the Munnar Plantation Strike of 2015 - a strike organized by the Pempilai Orumai women, against the …
Gender Socialization In Chinese Schools: Teachers, Children And Gender Roles, Connor Swan
Gender Socialization In Chinese Schools: Teachers, Children And Gender Roles, Connor Swan
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
As the first major social environment most children will encounter outside the family, school plays a pivotal role in the socialization of gender roles for young children. The aim of this research is to examine how young children learn and practice gender roles in Chinese school environments. In what ways do teachers and adults communicate messages about gender to children, and how do children receive and internalize these messages? What do teachers consciously intend to teach children about gender, and what do they unconsciously teach through their actions? Over the course of one month, I attended classes and observed teacher-student …

Behind Valencia: A Contemporary Play, Emily Charbonneau
Honors Projects in English and Cultural Studies
SYNOPSIS The purpose of this play is to highlight the length that modern females go to in order to maintain a desired appearance, especially across social media. These desired appearances are influenced by the glamorous and unrealistic looks and physiques that are prevalent in the media. Essentially, the primary goal of these characters is to attract the attention of their male counterparts because of the gender roles society promotes. This shallow lifestyle can be completely consuming for impressionable, young females.

Civil War Institute Student Research
This is a catalog for an exhibit that follows the evolution of African-American participation in the Civil War, from slaves, to contrabands, to soldiers of the United States Colored Troops (USCT), as well as the lives of black veterans beyond the war, and their ultimate military and social legacy. Using a variety of period items, it creates a narrative that stretches from the Antebellum Period to the current day. In doing so, the exhibit shows how black sacrifice on the battlefield redefined the war's purpose throughout the divided nation, how Jim Crowe suppressed the memory of black participation after Reconstruction, …

Defining Biometrics: Toward A Transnational Ethic Of Personal Information, Nicola Morrow
Defining Biometrics: Toward A Transnational Ethic Of Personal Information, Nicola Morrow
International Studies Honors Projects
Innovations in biotechnology, computer science, and engineering throughout the late 20th and early 21st centuries dramatically expanded possible modes of data-based surveillance and personal identification. More specifically, new technologies facilitated enormous growth in the biometrics sector. The response to the explosion of biometric technologies was two-fold. While intelligence agencies, militaries, and multinational corporations embraced new opportunities to fortify and expand security measures, many individuals objected to what they perceived as serious threats to privacy and bodily autonomy. These reactions spurred both further technological innovation, and a simultaneous proliferation of hastily drafted policies, laws, and regulations governing the collection, …
Plato’S Charioteer: On Mythos And Logos In The Dialogues, Tyler Palombo, Augustus Morrissey Snyder
Plato’S Charioteer: On Mythos And Logos In The Dialogues, Tyler Palombo, Augustus Morrissey Snyder
MAD-RUSH Undergraduate Research Conference
Plato [ca. 427-347 BC], a citizen of ancient Athens wrote dialogues not only for philosophically trained readers of the Academy, a center of learning established by Plato around 387 BC, but also to interest, instruct and persuade those outside of the Academy of the value of choosing and living a morally good life. The dialogues contain both marvelous stories [mythoi] and extended arguments [logoi].
The first section of the paper considers the nature and purpose of myth and its effects on the hearer or reader. The second section describes the various argumentative techniques used in the dialogues, their purpose and …
Specters Of Meaning: Deconstructing Wittgenstein And Reconstructing Ethics, Ami H. Naff
Specters Of Meaning: Deconstructing Wittgenstein And Reconstructing Ethics, Ami H. Naff
Philosophy Honors Projects
Crucial to the debate over the censorship of hate speech is a question of how meaning operates in language, and the political consequences thereof. I respond through an analysis of Ludwig Wittgenstein’s “meaning-as-use,” which situates language as an activity, a form of life. I argue Wittgenstein’s philosophy is a deconstruction of meaning, anticipating that of Jacques Derrida, which implies an ethical openness to the ambivalence of language. This is ostensibly contrary to the efforts of conscientious censorship. However, it is only by being open to the ambivalence of the word that we can work past hate speech and toward empowerment.

Write What You Know: The Process Of Writing A Young Adult Novella, Grace Morgan
Honors Projects in English and Cultural Studies
One tragedy, two lives changed forever. This novella follows the paths of two characters coping with the death of loved ones. It examines the themes of grief, friendship, family, self-discovery and inner strength. Specifically, how these things manifest and change after experiencing extreme loss. The dual narrative compares and contrasts the varying ways people react to grief. This project on creative writing followed the writing process from brainstorming to final draft.
