1972 - The Old World Background Of The Irrigation System Of San Antonio, Texas (Southwestern Studies Series: No 35); Glick, Thomas F.

Miscellaneous Publications

An in depth work that compares the Old-World irrigation systems established in the late fifteenth century on the islands off Spain (Canary Islands) and the technology/works applied in "New Spain," most notably, in the San Antonio, Texas, region. The Spaniards brought with them arid-land techniques, including technology and institutional framework for irrigation and distribution of water. Thomas Glick shows how the settlers adapted the Old-World irrigation principles and practices introduced into Spain by the Muslims in the Middle Ages while embracing other irrigation methods in their new environment.

The Eternal Hero: A Study Of The Evolution Of The Literary Character Throughout History, James Simms Apr 2017

The Eternal Hero: A Study Of The Evolution Of The Literary Character Throughout History, James Simms

Undergraduate Distinction Papers

The Literary character has always existed, and I intend to show how he or she has changed the times, and, in turn, been changed by the times. Literature is a powerful force of culture and morality, liberalism and conservatism, engines of fate, and forces of chaos. As each era has its own values, so each character reflects those values (and might even go against some in order to convey the authors’ understanding of them). The characters, if powerful enough, often cause social change, defining major thoughts of various eras. Literature can both define a period, but can also be the …

Families And God-Human Interactions In Genesis, Josias A. Flores Apr 2017

Families And God-Human Interactions In Genesis, Josias A. Flores

Honors Theses

This study carefully analyzes the themes found in various interactions between God and humans in the book of Genesis, viewing them through the lens of family. The majority of the texts that record direct verbal communication between God and humans reveal that God initiates such encounters in order to develop and define healthy families. Themes found in the God-human interactions parallel previous conclusions in family studies research regarding family rituals. Motivated by insights from the behavioral sciences, this work contributes to the scholarly discussion surrounding families from a theological perspective and also provides practical implications for modern-day families.

Cartesian Method And Experiment, Aaron Spink Apr 2017

Cartesian Method And Experiment, Aaron Spink

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The conception of René Descartes as the arch-rationalist has been sufficiently exploded in recent literature; however, there is still a large lacuna in our understanding of how empirical research and experimentation fits within his philosophy. My dissertation is directed at addressing just this problem. I contend that Descartes’ famed method is not a singular monolith but instead two interdependent methods: one directed at metaphysical and epistemological truth, while the other directed at empirical questions and contingent facts of the world. I claim there is evidence for this position not only in his actual scientific practice, but also in the rhetorical …

Traveling Women And Consuming Place In Eighteenth-Century Travel Letters And Journals, Cassie Patricia Childs Apr 2017

Traveling Women And Consuming Place In Eighteenth-Century Travel Letters And Journals, Cassie Patricia Childs

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Traveling Women and Consuming Place in Eighteenth-Century Travel Letters and Journals considers how various women-authored travel narratives of the long eighteenth century employ food in the construction of place and identity. Chronologically charting the letters and journals of Delarivier Manley, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, Janet Schaw, and Frances Burney, I argue that the “critical food moments” described in their letters and journals demonstrate material, cultural, and social implications about consumption. My interdisciplinary project is located at the intersection of three seemingly divergent topics: food studies, human geography, and women-authored travel narratives. Approaching “place” as a way of being-in-the-world, my project …

Heteroglossic Chinese Online Literacy Practices On Micro-Blogging And Video-Sharing Sites, Yi Zhang Apr 2017

Heteroglossic Chinese Online Literacy Practices On Micro-Blogging And Video-Sharing Sites, Yi Zhang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates Chinese online users’ adoptions of various languages and other meaning making signs in their online literacy practices in two popular Chinese CMC sites, Weibo (micro-blogging) and bilibili.com (video-sharing). Adopting the theoretical framework of heteroglossia (Bakhtin, 1981), I explore how various meaning making resources are creatively and playfully utilized by Chinese users in their online communication. After two-month data collection, I sampled the non-standard literacy practices (e.g., foreign language transliteration) identified from micro-blogging postings and comments in Weibo, as well as spontaneous (known as “bullet curtain” comments) and traditional text-box comments from featured videos in bilibili.com. The findings …

Integrating The Problem-Solving Task And Divergent Professional Values, J. David Pierce Apr 2017

Integrating The Problem-Solving Task And Divergent Professional Values, J. David Pierce

Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology

In the cross-pollinated approach to healing, implicit and underlying value structures of the "healers" need to be made explicit and correlated with the task at hand. A theoretical model and an example are presented that clarify the professional roles and associates values; further, the complementarity needed in a coordinated healing effort is explicated.

Bondageanalysis, Burrell Dinkins Apr 2017

Bondageanalysis, Burrell Dinkins

Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology

Bondageanalysis is as concerned about history as with other therapeutic systems. It assumes that persons trapped in bondage participate in some way in their own bondage, even when they appear to be victims of oppression. The dynamics of this are the primary concern.

For The Healing Of The Nations, John M. Miller Apr 2017

For The Healing Of The Nations, John M. Miller

Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology

In this article, John M. Miller argues that the culminating portrayal of God's eternal purpose for the church provides a powerful paradigm by which to establish missional priorities. Guided by the primary text, he addresses three critical missiological issues: 1) the lack of missionary interest in the church; 2) tire problem of defining the unfinished task; and 3) the crucial character of healing in ministry for the world.

Origins Of The Divine Healing Movement In America, Paul G. Chappell Apr 2017

Origins Of The Divine Healing Movement In America, Paul G. Chappell

Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology

The American divine healing movement was born and nourished during a period in which the nation wrenched its soul over the moral evil of slavery. The birth arid nourishment of the movement was also during a time when the spiritual stabilities of life were being tampered with by the forces of modern science and biblical criticism. With a vigorous expectation on the part of the people, this new manifestation of the supernatural began.

Healings: Sign Or Gift, Howard M. Ervin Jr Apr 2017

Healings: Sign Or Gift, Howard M. Ervin Jr

Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology

As signs of the kingdom "at hand," healing is a divine response to repentance and faith. Can the same be said of healings within the household of faith, the church? Or must other criteria be applied to the interpretation? It is here that current charismatic exegesis must be scrutinized rigorously
