To Grow Together, Or To Grow Apart: The Long Sorrow Of The Ents And Marriage In The Lord Of The Rings, Nicole Duplessis Apr 2017

To Grow Together, Or To Grow Apart: The Long Sorrow Of The Ents And Marriage In The Lord Of The Rings, Nicole Duplessis

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Explores Tolkien’s thoughts on love and marriage as expressed through the Ents and Entwives. Our understanding of their relationship and long sundering is enriched by considering Lewis’s thoughts in The Four Loves on philia and eros, yet in the end both Tolkien’s lived experience of marriage and parenthood and his Catholic background enhance his picture of the Ents with more realism than Lewis’s somewhat (pre-Joy) theoretical approach.

"Time To Prepare A Face": Mythology Comes Of Age, Andrew Lazo

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Guest of Honor address from Mythcon 47. A study of the place of mythology in ancient, medieval, and modern literature, the responses of Lewis and Tolkien to Modernity, and a meditation on Lewis’s thoughts on joy and the varieties of love in Surprised by Joy, the Narnia books, The Four Loves, and especially Till We Have Faces, for which Lazo offers an insightful reading of the concluding pages.

"Enough About Whores": Sexual Characterization In A Song Of Ice And Fire, Joseph Young Apr 2017

"Enough About Whores": Sexual Characterization In A Song Of Ice And Fire, Joseph Young

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series is replete with characters who engage in sexual misconduct and violence. Yet there are subtleties in the intents and effects of their conduct that grant us, as readers, more than mere titillation: increased insight into his characters and themes. Young considers the characteristics of viewpoint characters in Gothic literature and how they engage the sympathies of the reader.

"It Had Been His Virtue, And Therefore Also The Cause Of His Fall": Seduction As A Mythopoeic Accounting For Evil In Tolkien's Work, Maria Alberto Apr 2017

"It Had Been His Virtue, And Therefore Also The Cause Of His Fall": Seduction As A Mythopoeic Accounting For Evil In Tolkien's Work, Maria Alberto

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Seduction is often connected to eros, but Tolkien generally uses the term in a broader fashion. A theoretical underpinning based on medieval sources, Baudrillard, and Catholic thought provides a basis for understanding how characters may be led astray from their proper paths, and how Tolkien’s critique of the domination of other wills is demonstrated in these cases.

Tolkien's Allusive Backstory: Immortality And Belief In The Fantasy Frame, Wayne A. Chandler, Carrol L. Fry Apr 2017

Tolkien's Allusive Backstory: Immortality And Belief In The Fantasy Frame, Wayne A. Chandler, Carrol L. Fry

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Mortality and immortality underlie the “emotional truth” (95) of Tolkien’s backstory, a truth which draws us as readers into a world in which longing and loss, death and deathlessness, are the foundation of a sub-created world that we as readers desire. The fantasy frame in Tolkien’s legendarium is extremely deep, and has been highly influential on other creators.

Utopia In Deep Heaven: Thomas More And C.S. Lewis's Cosmic Trilogy, Benjamin C. Parker Apr 2017

Utopia In Deep Heaven: Thomas More And C.S. Lewis's Cosmic Trilogy, Benjamin C. Parker

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Teases out parallels to Thomas More’s Utopia the solar system of Lewis’s Cosmic Trilogy, to show how Lewis’s scholarly engagement with this text informs his depictions of Malacandra, Perelandra, and the smaller world of the N.I.C.E. Particularly emphasized are the similarities in the overall structures and the narrators and protagonists.

A Common Language Of Desire: The Magicians, Narnia, And Contemporary Fantasy, Kelly Kramer Apr 2017

A Common Language Of Desire: The Magicians, Narnia, And Contemporary Fantasy, Kelly Kramer

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Grossman’s trilogy, and particularly the first novel, is centered around the theme of unfulfilled and unfulfillable desire—the depressed main character Quentin’s inability to find anything that will ease his disillusionment and grant him lasting happiness. Grossman’s revisioning of Narnia as Fillory is examined closely.

Experiences Of Adolescents And Drama: "This Is Bullsh*T. I Can't Do It", Erin K. Hulse Phd

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

The purpose of this practitioner action research (PAR) study was to explore experiences of middle school students enrolled in a basic drama class, creating a performance piece that allowed for the representation of voices and opinions of participants. Seventh and eighth grade students developed work relating their perspectives on issues important to them--friendship, respect, equality, secrets, and moving on. Questions were 1) how are trust, ensemble, and community developed with the participants? 2) how do students respond to drama games, and 3) how do participants express their perspectives regarding issues using the creative drama strategies? Students created a performance of …

Exploring The Desired Qualities Of Performers, Tatiana E. Harman Apr 2017

Exploring The Desired Qualities Of Performers, Tatiana E. Harman

Senior Honors Theses

The goal of this thesis is to bring the entertainment industry better prepared performers. An invaluable tool for the actor is the talent agent, someone who will not only submit actors for roles and auditions not readily available to the public, but also negotiate contracts to ensure the safety and security of the actors. Because an agent’s income is only 10% of what his/her actors make, it is necessary that agents represent actors that they believe will consistently get work. However, beyond that, it is not widely known the specific qualities agents desire in the talent they represent. Through a …

The Name Of The Ring; Or, There And Back Again, Janet Brennan Croft

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Deals with the decline in power of evil through the ages of Arda, and how this is connected with phases of the development of language (metaphoric, metonymic, and demotic) as described by Northrop Frye and Owen Barfield.

L’Histoire Mondiale De L’Art, Au Défi D’Un Grand Récit, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel Apr 2017

L’Histoire Mondiale De L’Art, Au Défi D’Un Grand Récit, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel

Artl@s Bulletin

Where They Wander, Kevin T. Gleich Apr 2017

Where They Wander, Kevin T. Gleich

Theses

The stories contained within are all concerned in one way or another with our memory. More specifically, what it means to remember something. With a fictional drug, referred to only as “serum,” the characters in these stories all fall victim to what can be described as an overdose of experience. Our memories are what allow us to develop ideology, our concept of self, and intimacy with others. Each story in “Where They Wander” deals in some way with these basic human traits by exaggerating the characters’ abilities to confront their experiences.

There is another thread that pulls these stories together. …

Frida's Daughter, Myrta Vida

Theses

The purpose of my creative writing is to highlight a group of U.S. citizens still woefully underrepresented in literature proper: the Latinx middle class. I’m keenly interested in exploring Puerto Rican and first- and second-generation Latinx immigrant stories. Even though some of the experiences from these groups have been elegantly visited by writers such as Giannina Braschi, Sandra Cisneros, Junot Diaz, Julia Alvarez, and others, there are nuances to the Latinx middle class experience that are yet to be uncovered. Being stuck in the cultural, linguistic, socio-economic, and political middles in a country that has recently taken a largely nationalist …

Damar On Fridays, Maja Sadikovic

Theses

Abstract

These poems are about the first hand witnessing of the Balkan war and its visceral repercussions, ripping of families across generations and continents due to religious intolerance, and an identity crisis within the diaspora of the former Yugoslav people. They interact with appeals of loss, in terms of bodies, memory, and material, despair within the identity of the self in and outside of religion, and the perception of love and belonging, but not necessarily in that order. They are largely inspired by victim story-telling, translations of conversations with natives of the former Yugoslavia and their children, and ramifications of …

Finding The Surface, Rafaella F. Suarez Apr 2017

Finding The Surface, Rafaella F. Suarez

CGU MFA Theses

I find the relationship of pool structures and water fascinating. The architecture of pools is often hard edged and geometric while water is a fluid and formless, an organic substance that takes the shape of whatever contains it. I am drawn to that paradox. Rather than pulling them apart because of their conflicting existences, they create a space that’s cohesive but inexplicable, a space that’s both reciprocally intertwined and interdependent. My work is set up within the idea of creating a conflicting yet cohesive space. Visually, corporally and conceptually, it creates experiences that are disorienting.

My work serves as a …
