Leading The Field Of Music Through Three Premieres At Sfa, Brad Meyer Apr 2017

Leading The Field Of Music Through Three Premieres At Sfa, Brad Meyer

Symposium on Arts and Research

In the fall of 2016, I gave premiere performances of three new works for solo percussionist with electronics: Pulsar, The Taos Hum, and Ojibwe Song. I was the consortium director for Ojibwe Song, and I was a consortium member for Pulsar and The Taos Hum. Each piece utilized electronic audio components that accompanied solo percussion instruments: Ojibwe Song was written for vibraphone, Pulsar was written for concert snare drum, and The Taos Hum was written for timpani. Being on the leading edge of the field of percussion helps SFA's music department and myself stay on the forefront of what is …

Stem, Steam, And German Language Acquisition: Modified Project-Based Learning In A German Conversation Course, Louise Stoehr Apr 2017

Stem, Steam, And German Language Acquisition: Modified Project-Based Learning In A German Conversation Course, Louise Stoehr

Symposium on Arts and Research

This project describes an investigation into the efficacy of employing a modified project-based learning model to enhance the presentation and conversation skills of students in German 235: Intermediate German Conversation. Unlike usual language conversation courses that rely on expensive textbooks and focus on reading selections followed by discussion questions, GER 235 sought to engage students in a journey of discovery as they explored topics typically more at home in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics courses (STEM) and that were supplemented by the arts: STEAM. The impetus for this course developed out of a teaching unit that I created on the …

Towards A Theology Of The Single Mother, Stephanie Townes Apr 2017

Towards A Theology Of The Single Mother, Stephanie Townes

Seminary Masters Theses

Families are changing. The white picket fence nuclear family with a mother, father, 2.2 kids and a dog is no longer the norm for American society. Families look less and less like “traditional families.” Blended families, children born out of wedlock, cohabitation, step-families, multigenerational families, adopted children, single parent families, foster parents, and homosexual partners raising children are all part of the fabric of society. Society has changed so much that, as feminist theologian Rosemary Radford Ruether points out, “it is no longer possible to speak of one predominant “normative” model of family.”

The Conflicting Conflict: Memorialization And Memory Of The Great War, Danielle E. Jones Apr 2017

The Conflicting Conflict: Memorialization And Memory Of The Great War, Danielle E. Jones

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

July 1st through 3rd, 2013 marked the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. There were an estimated 300,000 to 500,000 visitors to the national park, including as many as 10,000 reenactors. The Civil War sesquicentennial was commemorated from the very beginning, and ended with a reenactment in Appomattox that saw over 6,000 people visit to re-live the end of the American Civil War. On April 9th, bells across the nation, including at Gettysburg College, tolled for 4 minutes to honor the four years the war raged on. Plans were started for the anniversary almost a decade in advance and …

Soldier, Officer, Citizen: Applying Just War Theory To Police Use Of Force, Benjamin N. Wisniewski Apr 2017

Soldier, Officer, Citizen: Applying Just War Theory To Police Use Of Force, Benjamin N. Wisniewski

Theses

A police officer's badge is the emblem of a shield, meant to protect and serve citizens from violence and crime. Yet today, so many citizens feel their shield is absent, if not weaponized against them. This perception of malfeasance has become evident in the waves of outrage and protest that followed high profile applications of coercive and lethal force by the police in recent years. One need only look at the armor and munitions police deploy in the searches of citizens and on perimeters of protests as evidence that the tools of the police mission are converging with those of …

Parallel Design Of A Product And Internet Of Things (Iot) Architecture To Minimize The Cost Of Utilizing Big Data (Bd) For Sustainable Value Creation, Ryan Bradley, Ibrahim S. Jawahir, Niko Murrell, Julie Whitney Apr 2017

Parallel Design Of A Product And Internet Of Things (Iot) Architecture To Minimize The Cost Of Utilizing Big Data (Bd) For Sustainable Value Creation, Ryan Bradley, Ibrahim S. Jawahir, Niko Murrell, Julie Whitney

Institute for Sustainable Manufacturing Faculty Publications

Information has become today's addictive currency; hence, companies are investing billions in the creation of Internet of Things (IoT) frameworks that gamble on finding trends that reveal sustainability and/or efficiency improvements. This approach to “Big Data” can lead to blind, astronomical costs. Therefore, this paper presents a counter approach aimed at minimizing the cost of utilizing “Big Data” for sustainable value creation. The proposed approach leverages domain/expert knowledge of the system in combination with a machine learning algorithm in order to limit the needed infrastructure and cost. A case study of the approach implemented in a consumer electronics company is …

Is Having Children An Essential Part Of A Good Human Life?, Bethany Blinsky Apr 2017

Is Having Children An Essential Part Of A Good Human Life?, Bethany Blinsky

Undergraduate Distinction Papers

Is being a parent part of living a good human life? In this paper I argue, contra Rosalind Hursthouse, that the answer is no. However, I make the case that something very much like this is essential to living a good human life. I get at this by borrowing Claudia Mills’ account of the value of unchosen relationships. I argue that unconditional and unchosen love is an essential component of a good human life, and while we can get this by having children, we can also get it in other ways.

Separation Of Church And State: Stratified Access To Reproductive Healthcare In The United States, Brenna Helm Apr 2017

Separation Of Church And State: Stratified Access To Reproductive Healthcare In The United States, Brenna Helm

Undergraduate Distinction Papers

Reproductive rights continue to be a political issue in the United States, with arguments emanating from various angles - including religious and feminist ideologies. The contentious tone of the recent presidential election did nothing to quell the debate. Recently, attempts to create policy limiting access to contraceptives and comprehensive sex education, are important aspects of reproductive health, but the controversy predominantly lies with access to abortion.

The purpose of this study is to understand if there is a relationship between elected office holders’ political party affiliation and the presence or absence of both Planned Parenthood clinics and so-called crisis pregnancy …

Jesuit And Feminist Hospitality: Pope Francis’ Virtue Response To Inequality, Kate Ward Apr 2017

Jesuit And Feminist Hospitality: Pope Francis’ Virtue Response To Inequality, Kate Ward

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Pope Francis is the first Jesuit pope and has made economic inequality a theme of his pontificate. This article shows that Pope Francis diagnoses economic inequality as both a structural problem and a problem of virtue, and that the virtue he calls for in response is what James F. Keenan, SJ has called Jesuit hospitality. Reviewing contemporary theological work on hospitality, I show that Francis’ Jesuit hospitality shares many features with hospitality as described by feminist theologians. Namely, it is risky, takes place across difference, acknowledges the marginality of both host and guest, and promises mutual benefit to each party. …
