Opaque Redemption: Whiteness, Theology, And The Politics Of The Human, Timothy Mcgee May 2017

Opaque Redemption: Whiteness, Theology, And The Politics Of The Human, Timothy Mcgee

Religious Studies Theses and Dissertations

Who can save us from redemption? Some of the earliest accounts of the African slave trade claimed that slavery saved those marked by the “perdition” of soul, mind, and body (G. E. de Zurara). Postcolonial critics argue that colonization (F. Fanon), orientalism (E. Said), and even liberal democracy (T. Asad) have operated as violent projects of redemption. At the center of these modern politics of redemption, or of modernity as a project of redemption, is a racial figure of the human, what Sylvia Wynter calls Man. This dissertation, Opaque Redemption: Whiteness, Theology, and the Politics of the Human, …

The Joker: A Character Study Of A Modern Madman, Jay Ewald May 2017

The Joker: A Character Study Of A Modern Madman, Jay Ewald

English Theses - Archive

When the Joker first appeared in the pages of Batman on April 25, 1940, he was intended to be little more than a throwaway villain for the hero to face. Since his debut, the Joker has appeared in countless comics, TV shows, and movies. He has become a cultural icon unlike any other and is recognized around the world. The Joker has been studied through the lens of psychology, and has been used as an example of evil, villainy, and moral bankruptcy. The complexity of this comic book villain is unparalleled by even his closest villainous analog. This thesis examines …

"A Shot In The Dark": Post-9/11 One-Off Speculative Fiction, Michael Lynn Brittain May 2017

"A Shot In The Dark": Post-9/11 One-Off Speculative Fiction, Michael Lynn Brittain

English Dissertations - Archive

The cultural, political, and historical impact of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, as an event, continues to be questioned. For this project, I will examine six “one-off” or “one-time” works of speculative fiction from highly-acclaimed and award-winning writers— Philip Roth’s The Plot Against America (2004), Cormac McCarthy’s The Road (2006), Michael Chabon’s The Yiddish Policemen’s Union (2007), Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go (2005), Chang-Rae Lee’s On Such a Full Sea (2014), and Ben Marcus’s The Flame Alphabet (2012) —who, prior to the terrorist attacks on 9/11, all worked predominantly in creating works in the genre of realist …

Constructing Space And Framing The Beholder: Problems And Solutions In Gustave Caillebotte’S Compositions, Araceli Bremauntz Enriquez May 2017

Constructing Space And Framing The Beholder: Problems And Solutions In Gustave Caillebotte’S Compositions, Araceli Bremauntz Enriquez

Art and Art History Honors Theses

This project investigates Gustave Caillebotte's techniques of constructing and arranging space. Previous scholarship has examined the artist's works in light of external, social, and historic evidence, therefore, my account will provide a detailed formal analysis of the works considering the role of the intended viewer. In looking closely Young Man Playing the Piano, Man at his Bath, and Pont de l’Europe, I argue that the viewpoint assigned to the beholder projects an irreconcilable vision of modernity. Caillebotte utilizes elements of representational painting--viewpoints, the illusion of time, the arrangement of people within space, and the built structures that describe space--in order …

La Cité That Care Forgot: Public Housing And The Perception Of 'Ordinary Modernism' In Paris And New Orleans, Brooks Cameron Piper May 2017

La Cité That Care Forgot: Public Housing And The Perception Of 'Ordinary Modernism' In Paris And New Orleans, Brooks Cameron Piper

Art and Art History Honors Theses

The Lafitte housing complex in New Orleans, Louisiana and the Barre Balzac apartment tower outside Paris typified the ordinary modernism that transformed cities around the world in the mid-twentieth century. I use the term “ordinary modernism” to refer specifically to buildings that exhibit characteristics of modern architecture, but lack the pedigree of iconic buildings designed by famous architects for illustrious clients. Lafitte and Balzac were public housing projects, possessing neither the opulence of a private villa nor the grandeur of a house of parliament. Although contemporary scholars and new residents alike admired the projects for their modernity at their construction, …

Three Women, Two Spheres, And A Contract: A Comparative Study Of Mary Astell And Mary Wollstonecraft Through The Lens Of Carole Pateman's "The Sexual Contract", Robyn Burke Dabora May 2017

Three Women, Two Spheres, And A Contract: A Comparative Study Of Mary Astell And Mary Wollstonecraft Through The Lens Of Carole Pateman's "The Sexual Contract", Robyn Burke Dabora

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

This project examines the writings of Mary Astell (1666-1731) and Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797) regarding women in light of ideas articulated by Carole Pateman (1940- ) in her book, The Sexual Contract (1988). In her work, Pateman critiques the prescriptions for the management of society suggested by classic contract theorists such as Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) and John Locke (1632-1704) and cites that their solutions focus solely on men in the public sphere of society. Pateman illuminates the condition of women in the private sphere of the home, and asserts that this realm operates by mechanisms radically different from those of the …

Winged Women: Stewardesses, Sexism, And American Society, Michele Martin May 2017

Winged Women: Stewardesses, Sexism, And American Society, Michele Martin

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

Airline stewardesses in the decades between 1950 and 1980 reflected a microcosm of the American feminist movement. Subjected to what feminist theorist Laura Mulvey called “the male gaze,” in which women are viewed as objects who exist for the viewer’s pleasure, they were selected for their youth and beauty and trained to serve. Regulations about height, weight, age, and marital status, ensured that stewardesses were young, thin, and single, and women in this job were fetishized as everything from girl next door to sex kitten. Stewardesses were expected to fulfill archetypal and stereotypical female roles, including mother, nurse, comforter, and …

Alfred Lord Tennyson, Julia Margaret Cameron, And The Arthurian Legends: Re-Writing And Re-Envisioning Women’S Roles In 19th Century England, Lisa Wagenhurst May 2017

Alfred Lord Tennyson, Julia Margaret Cameron, And The Arthurian Legends: Re-Writing And Re-Envisioning Women’S Roles In 19th Century England, Lisa Wagenhurst

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

Alfred Lord Tennyson (1809-1892) the poet and Julia Margaret Cameron the photographer (1813-1879) worked collaboratively on the Idylls of the King; a work of epic poetry that Tennyson wrote about the legends of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. His re-envisioned tales were cautionary and provided guidelines as to how women should behave or face the consequences of causing the downfall of society. Victorian society was in a precarious situation as women were expected to behave in certain ways, but at the same time they were finding their voices and beginning to speak out about patriarchal society …

Literacy Revolution: How The New Tools Of Communication Change The Stories We Tell, Molly Gamble May 2017

Literacy Revolution: How The New Tools Of Communication Change The Stories We Tell, Molly Gamble

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

The transmission of culture depends upon every generation reconsidering what it means to be literate. The way we consider ourselves to be a literate species is changing, which puts us at a unique turning point in human history. Verbal literacy, or the ability to read and write, is slowly being replaced by visual literacy as a primary tool for human communication. As a culture, we tend to underestimate the creative ferment of our increasingly visual world. The linear, structured pathways of traditional literacy are shifting towards a creative and participatory pursuit of unstructured information that emphasize dimensional thinking. The acceleration …
