Made In China: A Depiction Of Asian American Life, Sara Chiu May 2017

Made In China: A Depiction Of Asian American Life, Sara Chiu

Whittier Scholars Program

Through my art I want to showcase my grandparents struggle of imigrating and adapting to American life. My work is a depiction of Asian American life in the early 1960’s. I use found images of my female ancestors and manipulate them through the traditional style of chinese paper cutting. Paper cutting is a way I can connect to my Chinese heritage through art. Traditional paper cutting dates back to second century CE after paper was invented in China. Flora and fauna are very significant in Chinese art. Similarly, I have imposed plants into all of my pieces to illustrate location …

The American Dream, Micronationalisms, And The Three Part National Identity As Presented By Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, Brianna J. Doucet

English Department Theses

Hunter S. Thompson was a pioneer in Gonzo journalism, a writing style that fictionalized journalistic reporting through first draft, no editing publication. This unique writing style, coupled with Thompson’s personal collective identity based on Sedikides and Brewer’s three-part identity allowed for Thompson to draft a model for the three-part American identity based in the American dream. Throughout his career Thompson sought to find the American dream but what he found instead was the death of decency in America and the rebirth of the American dream through a whitewashed lens. The thesis paper explores three-parts of American identity, the American dream, …

Espn And The Nfl, Richard C. Crepeau May 2017

Espn And The Nfl, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

For several decades the revenue streams in sport have been overflowing their banks. Rights fees have skyrocketed, new sources of revenue seem at times to fall from the sky like manna from the electronic heavens, and just when you think the ceiling has been reached something new appears. It seems that it will never end, but of course at some point it must. Perhaps.

Reading Democracy And Education In The Context Of World War I, Thomas Fallace May 2017

Reading Democracy And Education In The Context Of World War I, Thomas Fallace

Democracy & Education

In this historical study, the author offers a reading of Dewey’s Democracy and Education in the context of the two other books Dewey published the year before, German Philosophy and Politics and his coauthored Schools of To-morrow. Having published three books in two years, Democracy and Education arrived at the end of one of Dewey’s most prolific periods. Through these three texts, Dewey offered a pointed critique of authoritarian German politics, philosophy, and schooling and crafted an innovative pedagogy grounded in progressive democratic ideals as contrast. Using Germany as a clear and present foil, Dewey clarified his ideas on American …

Empowering Young People Through Conflict And Conciliation: Attending To The Political And Agonism In Democratic Education, Jane C. Lo May 2017

Empowering Young People Through Conflict And Conciliation: Attending To The Political And Agonism In Democratic Education, Jane C. Lo

Democracy & Education

Deliberative models of democratic education encourage the discussion of controversial issues in the classroom (e.g., Hess, 2009); however, they tend to curtail conflicts for the sake of consensus. Agonism, on the other hand, can help support the deliberative model by attending to antagonism in productive ways (Ruitenberg, 2009). In this paper, I present how agonistic deliberation (the infusion of agonism into deliberation) can work as an account of the political that may help empower young people. The paper presents two classic democratic classroom practices—structured academic controversy (SAC) and debate—together as examples of how agonistic deliberation can help students engage politically. …

Teaching For Toleration In Pluralist Liberal Democracies, Betto A.F. Van Waarden May 2017

Teaching For Toleration In Pluralist Liberal Democracies, Betto A.F. Van Waarden

Democracy & Education

This article determines which education enables the perpetuation of diverse ways of life and the liberal democracy that accommodates this diversity. Liberals like John Rawls, Stephen Macedo, and William Galston have disagreed about the scope of civic education. Based on an analysis of toleration—the primary means for maintaining a pluralist liberal democracy—I argue that schools should teach democratic participatory skills and a minimal exposure to diversity to enable citizens to participate in the democratic process of defining which cultural and religious practices the state should tolerate or prohibit through its laws. To make this argument, I contend, in contrast to …

Missing Persons’ Report! Where Are The Transgender Characters In Children’S Picture Books?, Ashley Lauren Sullivan, Laurie Lynne Urraro

Occasional Paper Series

When ruminating on the factors that impact early childhood education, one invariably reflects on the topic of how curriculum represents (or fails to represent) issues of gender, specifically with regard to how gender is portrayed within the selection of classroom picture books. In such ruminations, many questions emerge regarding the specific role reading curriculum plays as it relates to gender.

Nebraska Felons “Let My People Go””, Preston Love Jr. May 2017

Nebraska Felons “Let My People Go””, Preston Love Jr.

Black Studies Faculty Publications

The Nebraska Senate, thanks to new State Senator Justin Wayne’s Bill (LB75), is considering reducing the wait time for Felons to be able to vote in Nebraska. Currently Nebraska requires a Felon to wait two (2) years after they are released from prison and/or are released from probation restrictions, (commonly called being on paper), before they can vote. Wayne’s Bill would reduce the time to zero wait time. Let me be clear the felons have satisfied their “debt” to society and yet they cannot vote. Nebraska, come on “Let My People Go””, let them vote.

Lincoln’S First 100 Days, Hannah M. Christensen May 2017

Lincoln’S First 100 Days, Hannah M. Christensen

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

Imagine trying to avoid a civil war and then having to figure out how to fight one—all in one’s first 100 days in office and all without Congress. That was what Abraham Lincoln’s first 100 days as president essentially looked like. From his first full day in office on March 5th, 1861 to his 100th day in the middle of June, Lincoln barely had time to handle the things presidents normally did, never mind relax.

Kurdistan as a region in north of Iraq has undergone significant changes regarding its educational system, and using ICTs (information communication technologies) for teaching and learning English has been given a great role in the system. There are many researchers who wrote about the benefits and the challenges of using ICTs. Students and teachers use ICTs for teaching and learning the skills of the English language such as reading, writing, speaking, and …

Sublime Memories: Bones As A Medium For Cyanotype Printing And Indigo Dying; The Strength Derived From Connection To The Environment; And The Power Of The Color Blue, Alexis R. Bernstein May 2017

Sublime Memories: Bones As A Medium For Cyanotype Printing And Indigo Dying; The Strength Derived From Connection To The Environment; And The Power Of The Color Blue, Alexis R. Bernstein

All College Thesis Program, 2016-2019

This project attempts to portray how connections to the environment provide strength and opportunities for growth. By printing cyanotype images of landscapes and plant life on bones, my work links the ecological world with a representation of mortality. The symbolism of bones provide concepts of strength and life, while the symbolism of blue evokes emotions of distance and longing that create a dreamy memory-inspired image quality throughout the series. The historic processes of cyanotype printing and indigo dying were successfully modified for the medium of bones, allowing both artistic techniques to work together in harmony.

Examining Assumptions About Student Engagement In The Classroom: A Faculty Learning Community’S Yearlong Journey, Marjolein Oele May 2017

Examining Assumptions About Student Engagement In The Classroom: A Faculty Learning Community’S Yearlong Journey, Marjolein Oele

Philosophy

Over the past twenty years, the term “student engagement” has become a primary means for orienting faculty and administrators around pedagogic improvements and curriculum development. The increasing prevalence of technology in educational settings and the ways it alters more traditional classroom formats, student-teacher interactions, and research methods suggest that engagement may now look and function differently than in the past. This article describes the reflective journey of a yearlong Faculty Learning Community (FLC) at a private, urban Jesuit university on the topic of student engagement. It investigates and debates current thinking on the topic, assesses methods of measurement, and shares …

Strengthening Slavery’S Border, Undermining Slavery: Fugitive Slaves And The Legal Regulation Of Black Mississippi River Crossing, 1804-1860, Jesse Nasta

The Confluence (2009-2020)

In the decades before the Civil War, St. Louis sat on a border between slave and free states. Jesse Nasta documents the role of common carriers—steamboats—on the Mississippi River for escaping slaves and the efforts of government to hold steamboat operators accountable for those escapes—efforts that reached all the way to the Missouri Supreme Court. This article is the recipient of the 2017 Tatom Award for the best student paper on a regional topic.
