Examination Of Molinism, Olivia Grey Steele
Examination Of Molinism, Olivia Grey Steele
The Kabod
What is the driving force behind salvation? Is it God’s sovereign will, enacting His efficacious grace upon the heart of man? Or is it the free will of man himself, choosing to accept the grace that has been extended to him? This is the age-old question behind the argument of sovereignty versus free will. Luis de Molina, a sixteenth century Jesuit theologian, believed that God, through His omniscience and omnipotence, can predestine an individual for salvation while keeping the free will of that individual intact. This system, known as Molinism, stands on three main principles: a wholly libertarian account of …

Initiating Research On Igniting Fires In The Blue Ridge Mountains During The Autumn 2016 Conflagration, Cynthia Twyford Fowler, Cynthia Fowler
Faculty Scholarship
An unprecedented moment in the fire ecology of the Blue Ridge Mountains occurred in Autumn 2016 when severe drought, frequent anthropogenic ignitions, and seasonality in disturbed deciduous forests fueled widespread burning. As the wildfires burned, wildland firefighters from around the U.S. temporarily moved into the region to assist local land managers. As wildfire risks increased and air quality decreased, local residents became increasingly interested in fire ecology. The community shifted continuously as wildfires were extinguished, wildland firefighters returned home, and local residents disengaged. In conducting research during the conflagration, obtaining consent from community members varied depending on whether or not …

Keres Language Loss In The Santo Domingo Pueblo Community, Christopher Chavez
Keres Language Loss In The Santo Domingo Pueblo Community, Christopher Chavez
American Studies ETDs
The purpose of this research is to consider the effect of the Keres language loss in the Santo Domingo Pueblo community and the need for language revitalization. The Keres-speaking community of Santo Domingo Pueblo has been adamantly opposed to instituting oral and written Keres language in the school system. The Santo Domingo people began to withhold information in response to the European intrusion into the Pueblo world. Isolating itself from the colonial powers served to maintain the unity of the Pueblo’s traditions and culture. However, a revitalization of the Keres language requires integration with the global society. Without the written …
The Dangers Of Living The "Half-Known Life": What Moby-Dick Can Teach Us About Nature, Katherine Barth
The Dangers Of Living The "Half-Known Life": What Moby-Dick Can Teach Us About Nature, Katherine Barth
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
At the time Herman Melville was grappling with the monstrous manuscript that was to become Moby-Dick, America was engaged in its own battles of global expansionism, including the Mexican War and the War of 1812, environmental devastation, unfair class conditions, the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, and shifting ideals of the self, other, and collective in American culture (Armstrong 1039). Unbeknownst to Melville, whose novel would go unappreciated during his lifetime, Moby-Dick would become prime fodder for 20th and 21st century literary critics and scholars who both critiqued and praised Melville's literary accomplishment as an exploration of the physical, emotional, …
Memorias Del Desencanto: Una Lectura De Todos Se Van De Wendy Guerra, Riska Perez-Castiello
Memorias Del Desencanto: Una Lectura De Todos Se Van De Wendy Guerra, Riska Perez-Castiello
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Abstract This paper analyzes the novel Todos se van (2006) by Wendy Guerra as a novel within the subgenre of the Künstlerroman, which explores the development of the young artist. Through the voice of a child and later an adolescent female narrator, the novel represents the disillusionment and suffering of a trapped generation that questions the utopian ideals it has lived. Additionally, I explore images of violence, specifically the mistreatment of children. Violations of human rights appear as specific events that the protagonist and the whole of Cuban society must suffer. Lastly, I connect the characteristics of the novel --such …
System Design To Reduce Risk Of Cranial Injury For Servicemen & Servicewomen, Stefan Leimer, David Morgan
System Design To Reduce Risk Of Cranial Injury For Servicemen & Servicewomen, Stefan Leimer, David Morgan
Journal of Undergraduate Research
With over 320,000 of our troops returning home with traumatic brain injuries over the course of only six years, brain injuries among U.S. servicemen and servicewomen have become a growing concern. The purpose of this project is to assess the current risks these individuals are facing and to design solutions that provide meaningful protection.
Extensive research was conducted into the epidemiology of traumatic brain injury (abbreviated as TBI) among military personnel deployed abroad. Though the government has long had an extensive program for documenting and reporting injuries, TBI has only recently begun to be recorded and reported. In an effort …

Looking For Truth: Dissecting Tales Of Fijian Cannibals, Brandon Olsen, Sarah Jamarillo, May Harrington
Looking For Truth: Dissecting Tales Of Fijian Cannibals, Brandon Olsen, Sarah Jamarillo, May Harrington
FHSS Mentored Research Conference
After Europeans encountered Fiji in the eighteenth century, the islands quickly gained fame for having cannibal tribes. Captain James Cook, an early explorer of the Pacific islands, describes the Fijian natives as an “addicted people, eating their enemies, whom they kill in the battle”(Banivanua-Mar 26). The people had a culture of war rituals, rivalry, and conflict between tribes that inspired cannibalistic rumors. Those that visited Fiji spread wild tales that the westerners eagerly devoured. Under analysis, these stories lack compelling evidence to claim the Europeans and Americans met Fijian cannibals and instead tell more about the society the tales come …
Lust And Lineage: The Complex Politics Of Chaucer’S The Clerk’S Tale, William Arguelles
Lust And Lineage: The Complex Politics Of Chaucer’S The Clerk’S Tale, William Arguelles
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Chaucer’s The Clerk’s Tale is one of the more perplexing stories in The Canterbury Tales, filled with paradox and resulting in a cacophony of fiery criticism. The difficulties posed by Griselda’s unwavering submission, the opaque ambitions behind Walter’s actions, the unclear moralistic ending and contradictory epilogue form the very paradoxes that force the reader to investigate their own reading of Griselda’s suffering. By examining one facet in particular, the political allegory underpinning the tale, The Clerk’s Tale’s contradictions immediately and immovably appear, creating a confounding yet arresting narrative about the interrelation between ruler and subject, husband and wife, king …

Problem-Based Learning Pedagogy Fosters Students’ Critical Thinking About Writing, Rita Kumar, Brenda Refaei
Problem-Based Learning Pedagogy Fosters Students’ Critical Thinking About Writing, Rita Kumar, Brenda Refaei
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
Convinced of the power of PBL to promote students’ critical thinking as demonstrated by its application across disciplines, we designed a series of problems for students in a second-year writing course. We collected samples of their writing before and after implementation of the problems. We were concerned about whether PBL pedagogy would negatively influence second-year students’ writing. However, our preliminary findings suggest that students’ critical thinking about writing improved with the use of PBL pedagogy.

This paper looks at librarian/course instructor collaboration in higher education and draws specific lessons from the two-year experience of a librarian embedded into an advanced college writing class. The case study pays particular attention to how collaboration influences students' development of research and writing skills and attitudes, and the instructional design of the course.
The Minorities Within The Minority, Gloria P. Aiten
The Minorities Within The Minority, Gloria P. Aiten
Student Research Symposium
The poster is based off of the research paper I am currently doing, it is about how in the Western Society the Asian-Pacific Islanders are categorized as one, but in reality they're two different ethnicity and how the PI are being misidentified. In other words, imagine putting a dog and a cat into one category. Yes they're both house pets, but they're two different species. That is exactly what's happening between the API community.
Is Fast Fashion A Concern Of The Everyday Teen?, Mariah N. Cruz
Is Fast Fashion A Concern Of The Everyday Teen?, Mariah N. Cruz
Student Research Symposium
The phrase “fast fashion” refers to getting clothes at extremely low costs to keep up with the newest fashion trends. When we purchase items, we don’t put much thought into where our clothing goes after we “get rid” of them. The saying “Out of sight, out of mind” is apparent when it comes down to consumers and letting go of old clothes. Our only concern as consumers is the next big thing. The fashion industry has drastically changed over the past two decades and trends play a huge role in this push for mass production. We as a society are …
Working-Class Black Women’S Role In Building And Sustaining Black Communities In The Pacific Northwest, Tessara G. Dudley
Working-Class Black Women’S Role In Building And Sustaining Black Communities In The Pacific Northwest, Tessara G. Dudley
Student Research Symposium
In response to the scholarly focus on the historical racism of the Pacific Northwest, this research attempts to answer the question of how Black communities have persisted in the face of discrimination. This study is a historical examination of the roles that Black women have played in building and sustaining Black communities within predominantly white regions, with a specific focus on the Portland-Vancouver area during and after World War II. This work focuses on the activities of working class Black women, a significant proportion of Black women migrating to the Pacific Northwest during World War II, examining their community-building activities …

Compositional Practice As Expression Of Cultural Hybridity In Lou Harrison’S Double Concerto For Violin, Cello, And Javanese Gamelan, Matthew N. Andrews
Student Research Symposium
Artists in the twenty-first century face a creative dilemma: styles and traditions from around the world are now available to all, and in the post-colonial era it can become difficult to discern the appropriateness of artistic borrowings. I propose that cultural hybridity, defined as genuine investment in another artistic culture's traditions and respect for its practitioners, can provide an “Ariadne's thread” to guide the interculturally sensitive artist. Lou Harrison's long relationship with the gamelan music (karawitan) of Indonesia provides an enlightening example. From his initial exposure to Asian music all through his decades of intensive study and instrument-building, Harrison's development …

Speculations On A City For Mars, Edouard Terzis
School of Architecture - Theses
This thesis proposes the reinterpretation of architectural forms as the index of the constitution of the idea of the city. “Speculations on a City on Mars” is paradoxical in a sense as it superposes both the managerial representation of a city, that is Zoning, along with the speculative aspect of an extra-terrestrial city.

Language Choice Of Bilingual Musicians, Macy Lethco
Language Choice Of Bilingual Musicians, Macy Lethco
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Often unconsciously, every bilingual makes a choice in each interaction of which language to use. These choices have many motivating factors but are mainly based on the content of the message and the identity of the speaker. This may occur in seconds and without hesitation. If even here, a choice is taking place, how much more in the writing, composition, and production of a song or album? Artists, unlike speakers in a conversation, can choose the audience the communicate with. Musicians and music listeners who choose to define themselves in a personal bilingual identity, which at the same time is …
