Letian Luo Thesis Statement, Letian Luo May 2017

Letian Luo Thesis Statement, Letian Luo

CGU MFA Theses

My work started out originating from my dreams, but recently it has moved away from that source. To make the cut outs, I would scribble on the back of a small sheet of scarp paper. Then I discovered that if I cut out the scribble, it become more interesting than the dream work. So I developed the scribbles further. I enlarged them, made them more complex and gestural, and then cut them out, meticulously and with painstaking attentiveness. The process allowed me to draw with knife. I very enjoy the process of me making the cut outs. It got increasingly …

Badlands, Meghan B. Augustine May 2017

Badlands, Meghan B. Augustine

CGU MFA Theses

Badlands is a project that invites a viewer to be present and still. It

asks a viewer for their time, and requires contemplation, introspection

and awareness.

My work is a translation of the color made on a specific place. It

investigates the marks that we leave on the physical and psychological

landscapes, and what is left behind.

There is a rhythm to this project that touches upon process and

metaphor. Process permits metaphor, and ultimately the paintings

embody their own beings. Dirt, light, space and energy. Energy never

dies. It is only recycled.

This project veils and unveils time with …

Temp Permit, Zhaoyang Zheng May 2017

Temp Permit, Zhaoyang Zheng

CGU MFA Theses

My work focus on the isolation and alienation between society and individual. As an artist, I also regard myself as a tourist, tourists are people who would like to explore and find special things which are not familiar to them. Usually a tourist is isolated from others because of his unfamiliarity with culture and language. It is hard for a tourist to fit into society which is same for artists: they like to explore different and most of the time they are isolated from main stream society.

Religion In The Media: A Study Of Student Perception Of Media Bias In Georgia, Alexander Clegg May 2017

Religion In The Media: A Study Of Student Perception Of Media Bias In Georgia, Alexander Clegg

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Georgia is fighting to make the step from developing to developed and the influence of the Georgian Orthodox Church has been an identified barricade for European Union leadership to accept Georgia into the supranational organization. This research investigates the relationship between religiosity and the perception of media bias among college students in Tbilisi, Georgia. It was hypothesized that the relationship between religiosity and perception of media bias will be negative, as measured by survey administered to the students. This paper proves the more religious a student is, the less likely he or she will recognize a media bias towards the …

After The Shoe Fits: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Four Versions Of The Cinderella Narrative, Faith L. Boren May 2017

After The Shoe Fits: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Four Versions Of The Cinderella Narrative, Faith L. Boren

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Fairy tales hold the power to influence societies and to challenge societal injustices, and the story of Cinderella exemplifies both of these roles. In this study, I conduct a rhetorical analysis of four different versions of the Cinderella narrative: Charles Perrault’s “Cendrillon,” the Brothers Grimm’s “Ascenputtel,” Anne Sexton’s "Cinderella,” and Disney’s Cinderella (2015). I examine Perrault’s “Cendrillon” and the Grimms’ “Aschenputtel” using constitutive rhetoric. This theory operates around the basic premise that rhetoric holds the power to aid in the shaping of societies. While analyzing “Cendrillon” and “Aschenputtel,” I specifically look for themes of classism and nationalism, respectively. I then …

Magical Politicism: History And Identity In Gabriel García Márquez’S Fiction, Isabel C. Henao May 2017

Magical Politicism: History And Identity In Gabriel García Márquez’S Fiction, Isabel C. Henao

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Gabriel García Márquez establishes the importance of identity, names, and narrative in order to highlight the importance of recognizing the past for a country that has allowed history to be rewritten and, as a result, forgotten. Márquez writes about what happens to a character with no history, for whom it then becomes imperative that the other characters orchestrate a narrative, thereby allowing Márquez to critique the neocolonialism and imperialism that occurred in Colombia. This strategy can be seen in several of his most well-known works—the short stories “A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings” and “The Handsomest Drowned Man in …

Organic Morality: A Poetic Garden Rhetoric Originating In The 18th Century, Heather Robinson May 2017

Organic Morality: A Poetic Garden Rhetoric Originating In The 18th Century, Heather Robinson

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Many literary critics have researched and conjectured on the 18 th century poets’ connections to the developing landscape gardens of the time. For example, Francesca Orestano, in “Bust Story: Pope at Stowe, or the Politics and Myths of Landscape Gardening,” discusses at length the presence and creation of Pope’s development of aesthetics at the Stowe landscape gardens. However, most critics have focused solely on the idea of the aesthetic that gardens create and their relationship to the human experience of nature. Markus Poetzsch, in “From EcoPolitics to Apocalypse: The Contentious Rhetoric of EighteenthCentury Landscape Gardening,” describes the heated political world …

The Covenant Of Deuteronomy And The Study Of The Ancient Israelite Jurisprudence, Kenneth C. Anyanwu May 2017

The Covenant Of Deuteronomy And The Study Of The Ancient Israelite Jurisprudence, Kenneth C. Anyanwu

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

“Happy are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord. Happy are those who keep his decrees, who seek him with their whole heart, who also do no wrong, but walk in his ways. (Psalm 119: 1 – 3)

All through the ages, law and justice has been a condition for a smooth, egalitarian and peaceful society. A society devoid of law and justice is not only unthinkable but a bedlam of chaos, anarchy and disorder. No wonder the ancient Greek philosopher and sage, Aristotle said, “At his best, man is the noblest of all animals; …

"I'D Rather Be Forgotten Than Dishonored": An Oral And Life History Project With A Vietnam Veteran, Hayley Michael Hasik May 2017

"I'D Rather Be Forgotten Than Dishonored": An Oral And Life History Project With A Vietnam Veteran, Hayley Michael Hasik

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

More than 2.7 million Americans served in the military during the Vietnam era and roughly 40,000 of them as helicopter pilots in Vietnam, yet scholars are still trying to understand the Vietnam experience. There is little doubt that the war played an influential role in the lives of that generation. Yet, many Vietnam veterans refrained from talking about their service, making it difficult to study and understand their experiences within the existing historical narrative. Using the life history of Warrant Officer James Scott, Hayley Hasik argues that Vietnam veterans—particularly helicopter pilots—are an underrepresented group that, through oral history, can provide …
