Using Reading Strategies To Differentiate Reading Instruction, Kari Allsup, Dawan Coombs May 2017

Using Reading Strategies To Differentiate Reading Instruction, Kari Allsup, Dawan Coombs

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Struggling readers have often developed learning strategies, but not strategies that help them become better readers. Consider, a student who is checked out every day before English to avoid the discomfort of reading aloud, a student who gets up every few minutes to sharpen pencils to avoid a difficult task, a student who knows how to look busy in ways that disguise a lack of comprehension. In contrast to these strategies, reading strategies can empower students to succeed, not merely avoid reading. This study examined three reading strategies within the context of a reader’s theatre focused on the drama, The …

My Giants, Teodora Altomare May 2017

My Giants, Teodora Altomare

Theses and Dissertations

My Giants is a thirty minute documentary about two journeys. During the first, in 2015, the filmmaker documented the story of Xylella fastidiosa, a bacteria responsible for the loss of many thousand-year-old olive trees in the Italian region of Puglia. During the second visit, in 2016, she witnessed the illness of her father.

By weaving together the two stories, My Giants is a snapshot of a transitional moment in the filmmaker’s life, a moment when illness became an opportunity to reconnect with her roots.

Separation In The Sara Female Initiation Ceremony, Kelsey Moe May 2017

Separation In The Sara Female Initiation Ceremony, Kelsey Moe

Religious Studies Undergraduate Research

This paper employs hermeneutics as opposed to a comparative, explanatory, or descriptive method to engage the phenomenon of Sara female initiation as captured by Lori Leonard’s ethnography, “Female Circumcision in Southern Chad: Origins, Meaning, and Current Practice.” The Sara people of Southern Chad – although predominantly Christian – have their roots in a pre-colonial religion that reveres ancestors. The spirits of Sara ancestors are believed to exist in the bush outside of the village. In the female initiation ceremony, girls are removed from the village and enter the surrounding bush to undergo the ritual transition. This separation is key to …

Tierno Monénembo Et L'Écriture De La Saga Sandervalienne: Réhabilitation Mémorielle Et Fracture Coloniale, Stephanie Diane Tsakeu Mazan May 2017

Tierno Monénembo Et L'Écriture De La Saga Sandervalienne: Réhabilitation Mémorielle Et Fracture Coloniale, Stephanie Diane Tsakeu Mazan

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

This work examines Olivier de Sanderval’s saga in Tierno Monénembo’s most studied novels Peuls and Le Roi de Kahel (The King of Kahel). The celebration of a colonialist within the novel leads us to argue that, in The King of Kahel by using literary forms and genres like the novel, the epic, the biography, the palimpsest, plagiarism, irony etc., to rehabilitate Olivier de Sanderval’s memory, the author offers the possibility to question the colonial fracture. In the first part we examine Olivier de Sanderval’s evolutionary representation in Monénembo’s texts. First disparaged in Peuls, where the author revisits …

How Anti-Racist Participatory Policy Advocacy Can Change Delaware’S Education System, Shyanne Miller May 2017

How Anti-Racist Participatory Policy Advocacy Can Change Delaware’S Education System, Shyanne Miller

Capstone Collection

Non-profit organizations fighting for change in the education system are more likely to realize their mission by engaging members of the public, particularly parents and students. However, engaging the public in a meaningful way requires an understanding of barriers to participation in the education system (racism), a shift away from colorblind, liberal ideology typically used to drive non-profit activity, and the undertaking of an anti-racist agenda when working within communities. Here, I offer a set of guidelines which the Rodel Foundation of Delaware can follow to implement anti-racist, participatory policy advocacy. Starting with a review of racism in Delaware’s education …

The Lost Voices Of Women In Poverty And Feminist Discorse, Anna Maria Tucker May 2017

The Lost Voices Of Women In Poverty And Feminist Discorse, Anna Maria Tucker

Graduate School of Art Theses

Abstract

My statement is that women in poverty are now, as in the past, in circumstances of exclusion within the feminist struggle. This exclusion is mirrored in various cultural movements and milieus. I see my performance work as a vehicle to express the emotions of women in class struggle. This has taken center stage with the return of the political (Trump, etc.). My work gives emotion and lived experience primacy to assert the unique subjectivity of working-class and poor women. This pays homage to the women who were relegated to the backdrop of modernist art.

I will compare my lived …

Negotiating Identity, Home, And Belonging: Understanding The Experiences Of African Women Refugees Resettled In The United States, Consolata Nthemba Mutua

Communication ETDs

The purpose of this study is to examine how former African women refugees negotiate their identity, sense of belonging, and home in the context of transnational displacement. To explore this topic, I conducted in-depth interviews, participant observation, and focus group interviews with African women who came to the United States as refugees and who now live in two cities in the Southwestern and Midwestern United States. The resulting data was analyzed using both thematic and narrative analysis.

For this study, I recruited through a snowball/network sampling strategy a total of 20 former African women refugees and conducted 15 in-depth interviews, …

Keep Them Coming: Discovering Why Upper-Division Students Use The Writing Center, Ethan Marston, David Stock May 2017

Keep Them Coming: Discovering Why Upper-Division Students Use The Writing Center, Ethan Marston, David Stock

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Because the development of writing skills is crucial to professional success, many writing center studies attempt to determine how to best encourage undergraduate students to attend their university writing centers. Many universities require freshmen to attend the writing center while enrolled in a first-year writing class. Because of this, a large portion of writing center research focuses on the effectiveness of this requirement, and its impact on students’ perceptions of and experiences with the writing center (Bell and Stutts, 1997; Bishop, 1990; Clark, 1985; Gordon, 2008; Rendleman, 2013). This research added to the extensive debate over whether or not writing …

Generational Attitudes Reflected Through Soviet Socialist Realism, Kelsey Herdman, Tony Brown May 2017

Generational Attitudes Reflected Through Soviet Socialist Realism, Kelsey Herdman, Tony Brown

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In his biography “Raising the Banner” artist Geli Korzhev, a Socialist Realist artist, believes that Socialist Realism should have been titled as “social realism”; that “socialism is associated with politics but it should be aimed at social issues,” and that “truth is a means to learn reality.”1 By studying Socialist Realism we see more than just the politics that governed the USSR between the 1940s leading up to its collapse in 1991. My original intent for writing this paper was to show the generational attitudes reflected through Socialist Realism, by comparing how the topics of the pieces changed over time. …

Bendablesound: An Elastic Multisensory Surface Using Touch-Based Interactions To Assist Children With Severe Autism During Music Therapy, Franceli L. Cibrian, Oscar Peña, Deysi Ortega, Monica Tentori

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

Neurological Music Therapy uses live music to improve the sensorimotor regulation of children with severe autism. However, they often lack musical training and their impairments limit their interactions with musical instruments. In this paper, we present our co-design work that led to the BendableSound prototype: an elastic multisensory surface encouraging users to practice coordination movements when touching a fabric to play sounds. We present the results of a formative study conducted with 18 teachers showing BendableSound was perceived as “usable” and “attractive”. Then, we present a deployment study with 24 children with severe autism showing BendableSound is “easy to use” …

A Phenomenological Approach To The Later Films Of Terrence Malick, Timothy Keeley May 2017

A Phenomenological Approach To The Later Films Of Terrence Malick, Timothy Keeley

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The cinematic legacy of Terrence Malick, while not settled because the director still lives and makes films, is already a turbulent one. A reclusive philosophy student, Malick’s early output accumulated admiration when Malick disappeared from cinema for twenty years. Like so many great 20th-century artists, including J.D. Salinger and Thomas Pynchon, Malick’s absence grew his legend, so his return was welcomed with anticipation and acclaim. As Malick’s output becomes more frequent, though, some are growing cold to his work, asserting that it is repetitive and pretentious, and borders on self-parody. Still others charge that Malick was only regarded as a …

Modern Mythologies: The Epic Imagination In Contemporary Indian Literature, Sucheta Kanjilal May 2017

Modern Mythologies: The Epic Imagination In Contemporary Indian Literature, Sucheta Kanjilal

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This project delineates a cultural history of modern Hinduism in conversation with contemporary Indian literature. Its central focus is literary adaptations of the Sanskrit epic the Mahābhārata, in English, Hindi, and Bengali. Among Hindu religious texts, this epic has been most persistently reproduced in literary and popular discourses because its scale matches the grandeur of the Indian national imagining. Further, many epic adaptations explicitly invite devotion to the nation, often emboldening conservative Hindu nationalism. This interdisciplinary project draws its methodology from literary theory, history, gender, and religious studies. Little scholarship has put Indian Anglophone literatures in conversation with other …
