Measuring Up: Standardized Testing And The Making Of Postwar American Identities, 1940-2001, Keegan J. Shepherd

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Standardized testing is a defining feature of contemporary American society. It not only governs how people are channeled through their schooling; it amplifies existing social disparities. Nonetheless, standardized testing endures, namely because it has served as a vital tool for the post-1945 American state. The postwar state prioritized, on the one hand, the cultivation of intellects resilient enough to sustain American geopolitical supremacy through scientific discovery and technological innovation and, on the other hand, the maintenance of an obedient population that would not disrupt existing social hierarchies. Standardized testing helped the postwar state solve this mind-body dilemma. As a function …

Rodríguez Studies America’S Image Of Cuba And Of Itself, Aldemaro Romero Jr.

Publications and Research

“It has to do with my emotional DNA— storytelling and maternal love are linked together. I was brought up by women who read to me as a kid. I love storytelling because I associate it with love, and that has carried over tremendously throughout my life.” That is how Dr. Rick Rodríguez explains his love for literature.

A native of Havana, Cuba, Rodríguez went on to receive his bachelor’s in English from Florida International University and his doctorate, also in English, from the University of Chicago. Today he is an assistant professor in the Department of English of the Weissman …

Finding Meaning In The Flag: Furl That Banner, Olivia Ortman Oct 2017

Finding Meaning In The Flag: Furl That Banner, Olivia Ortman

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

Hello again, readers. I hope you enjoyed the summer and are now as eager as I am to jump back into our conversation about the Confederate flag. Although I spent the summer at Minute Man NHP, the Civil War was never far from my mind. Even in a northern park dedicated to the American Revolution, I still heard a lot about the Confederate monument debates, and as I spoke with visitors who were following this topic in the news, I was reminded of a similar debate several years ago concerning the Confederate flag. Searching Infinity For Authentic Form: The Problem Of Memoir, Annmarie Lynn Dill Oct 2017

Searching Infinity For Authentic Form: The Problem Of Memoir, Annmarie Lynn Dill

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a rhetorical analysis of the genre of memoir specifically examining the language used to define, describe, and critique the genre, focusing on the ways the language undermines memoir’s generic value. Since the 1990’s memoir has become increasingly popular, but lacks much academic investigation or critique into the conventions of the genre, though it has amassed much criticism. The genre’s rhetorical situation is at odds with general academic standards because inquiry must come before conclusive evaluations. To bridge this gap in scholarship, I have used methods of rhetorical criticism to analyze the definitions of memoir produced by five …
