The 95 Theses As A Template For Lasting Liturgical Reform, Timothy J. Wengert Nov 2017

The 95 Theses As A Template For Lasting Liturgical Reform, Timothy J. Wengert

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

In this lecture, Timothy Wengert uses the 95 Theses as a lens to view what is essential to Lutheran liturgical reform. The lecture concludes: "So this lies at the heart of the early Luther’s liturgical theology: the Mass, the sermon and prayer, all tied to faith and baptism. As we continue to witness to God’s renewal of Christian liturgy in our midst, Luther provides us with some of the Christian church’s richest resources."

Historically Black Colleges And Universities And Black Greek-Lettered Organizations In The “Post-Racial” Era Of Accountability, Donald Mitchell Jr., Ph.D. Nov 2017

Historically Black Colleges And Universities And Black Greek-Lettered Organizations In The “Post-Racial” Era Of Accountability, Donald Mitchell Jr., Ph.D.

Executives, Administrators, & Staff Publications

Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and Black Greek-lettered organizations (BGLOs) are institutions and organizations that provided African Americans with options for unification and education during years of overt racial discrimination when education and socioeconomic comforts were limited for the vast majority of Americans of African descent, and they continue to serve as support structures for African Americans today. Nevertheless, in the “postracial” era of accountability, questions surrounding the relevance of these organizations have become common discourse. While these organizations face similar narratives, HBCU and BGLO research, successes, and issues have not yet been analyzed, synthesized, or even acknowledged in …

The Curious Case Of Oliver Ward Nov 2017

The Curious Case Of Oliver Ward

DePaul Magazine

Uniersity Archivist Andrea Bainbridge discovered in the archives of the Vincentians' DeAndreis-Rosati Memorial Archives that a history of the Ward family at DePaul provided a unique framework to tell the story of the university before, during and after World War I (1914-1918). Two years in the making, the “Glimpses of the Great War” exhibit was the result.

Overcoming Hidden Shame To More Effectively Connect With God And His People, Colleen Lou Worrell Nov 2017

Overcoming Hidden Shame To More Effectively Connect With God And His People, Colleen Lou Worrell

Masters Theses

This research project was designed to help Christians identify and overcome hidden shame so that they would be able to enjoy a more authentic connection with God and as an extension, to His people. I chose this topic because Christians are often seen by non-Christians as being judgmental, critical and unloving. This behavior does not reflect the transformation and behavior mandated in Romans 12 and other similar scriptures. Because these behaviors are sinful, the investigation began with a review of mankind’s first sin in the garden of Eden. Out of that review, I discovered that shame is commonly found alongside …

The Fox And The Goose: The Pamphlet Wars And Volpone's Animal Metaphors, Julie Anne Anderson Nov 2017

The Fox And The Goose: The Pamphlet Wars And Volpone's Animal Metaphors, Julie Anne Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

Ben Jonson wrote Volpone when England's pamphlet wars and the rule of Queen Elizabeth I contributed to an environment in which the "woman question" was forefront in many minds. These social concerns echo in Volpone, resulting in a play that not only deals with vices and greed, but that also, to a limited degree, contributes to the querelle de femmes. The play's numerous animal metaphors create distinctions between characters; among other things, animalistic surnames represent the vices and complexities of humanity, and, more specifically, reverberate with judgments that seem to underscore the injustices of misogynistic pamphleteers. Moreover, Jonson's …

Deseables E Indeseables: El Doble Discurso De Género En Las Representaciones De Conversos En Las Cantigas De Santa María, Robert Michael Philips

Modern Languages Theses - Archive

Foreword To D.W. Robertson, Jr., Uncollected Essays, Paul A. Olson Nov 2017

Foreword To D.W. Robertson, Jr., Uncollected Essays, Paul A. Olson

Department of English: Faculty Publications

During the late summer of 1992, I received a call from Darryl Gless, a professor of Renaissance literature at the University of North Carolina and my former student, asking me if it would be all right if he and other people looking after the literary remains of D. W. Robertson would send me a package of published and unpublished articles that Robertson had left behind upon his death in July of that year. Gless had been a friend of Dr. and Mrs. Robertson in Chapel Hill, visiting with them frequently while trying a bit to look after their well-being in …

(Close) The Door, The King (Is Going): The Development Of Elliptical Resolution In Bha Mīmāṃsā, Malcolm Keating

Philosophy: Faculty Publications

This paper examines three commentaries on the Śabdapariccheda in Kumārila Bhaṭṭa’s Ślokavārttika, along with the the seventeenth century Bha Mīmāṃsā work, the Mānameyodaya. The focus is the Mīmāṃsā principle that only sentences communicate qualified meanings and Kumārila’s discussion of a potential counter-example to this claim–single words which appear to communicate such content. I argue that there is some conflict among commentators over precisely what Kumārila describes with the phrase sāmarthyād anumeyetvād, although he is most likely describing ellipsis completion through arthāpatti. The paper attempts both a cogent exegesis and philosophical evaluation of the Bha Mīmāṃsā view of ellipsis completion, arguing …

Book Review: Disruptive Thinking: Why How We Read Matters, Elise Orgille

The Utah English Journal

The ability to read is one of the most valuable skills students gain throughout the course of their education. Teachers work hard to help their students decode words and comprehend meaning, but what is the purpose of comprehension if students do not value what they read? In their book Disruptive Thinking: Why How We Read Matters, Kylene Beers and Robert E. Probst bring reading to the next level, reminding teachers and students that reading is a gift.

Graphic Activism: Lesbian Archival Library Display, Shawn(Ta) Smith-Cruz

Publications and Research

This chapter outlines the implementation of Graphic Activism, an exhibition of archival material from the Lesbian Herstory Archives, the oldest and largest lesbian archive in the world, located inside the display cases of the Graduate Center library of the City University of New York. The two-semester-long display stems from an institutional need to showcase material inside of the main library display cases, and the interest of including visual representations of Women's Studies material from the collection as well as those which represent the collection. The chapter discusses collaborative relationships outside of the academic institution, pointing to select challenges when …

Clausewitz's Theory Of War And Victory In Contemporary Conflict, Emile Simpson Nov 2017

Clausewitz's Theory Of War And Victory In Contemporary Conflict, Emile Simpson

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

This article considers whether Clausewitz’s account of the nature of war is universal to all wars, in order then to assess how far his concept of victory is universal. While aspects of Clausewitz’s concept of war are still universal, others are not. Accordingly, his theory of victory is not universal to all wars, and especially not to wars fought against transnational terrorist networks.

“Why Does Someone Have To Die At The End Of The Play?": How The Texts We Teach Shape Students’ Perceptions, Amy Piotrowski

The Utah English Journal

A few years ago, a group of students in my 11th grade English class came to some interesting conclusions about American literature. We were finishing the school year by reading A Raisin in the Sun, and the students were enjoying reading the play even though the countdown to summer vacation was well underway. This class was a group of reluctant readers, not interested in doing much reading, especially now that we had completed the state standardized test. One afternoon, when we were halfway through the play, I came into the classroom to start the day’s discussion. Several students were huddled …
