“Housekeeper”: The Application Of Barbara Ketcham Wheaton’S Methodology To A Year In The Life Of Honor Moore’S Recipe Columns, Carol Keating

Honor Moore was an Irish food writer who started writing a daily recipe column for the Belfast Newsletter in 1946, “Cookery Hints” written under her nom de plume, Housekeeper was published until 1963. In her personal collection there are scrapbooks of cuttings of her columns. Moore’s 1952 scrapbook, comprises recipe columns from each month of that year as well as cuttings she saved from other newspapers and magazines. Barbara Ketcham Wheaton’s structured approach to reading historic cookbooks was applied to Moore’s columns for this study; using the categories of ingredients, the cook’s workplace, the meal, the book and worldview. In the early nineteenth century, Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin and Alexandre-Balthazar-Laurent Grimod de La Reynière laid the foundations of modern food writing. Subsequently, the publication of Brillat-Savarin’s La Physiologie Du Goût in 1825 changed the landscape of food writing. His approach was at the root of a marriage between the art of prose and the art of cooking; he associated art with gastronomy. Although he only wrote a single book, he achieved great success, which contributed to the modernisation of a gastronomic society and to the development of French cuisine. In Brian Friel’s The Freedom of the City, Elizabeth Doherty (Lily) is a mother of eleven children who stumbles into the Guildhall, along with two young men, after a peaceful civil rights protest turns sour. During the hours spent in the Guildhall, Lily is subject to demeaning and oppressive comments. The Shaker Round Barn in Hancock Massachusetts has long been studied for its historical significance and insight into the life and beliefs of the nearly extinct religion. Within the discipline of art history, it is one of the only Shaker buildings discussed in entry-level architecture classes, portrayed to be the physical personification of the Shaker faith. In 1882, Chinese immigrants were deemed by Congress to be a corrupting influence in America; thus the Chinese Exclusion Act was passed, barring Chinese laborer immigration and the naturalization of Chinese immigrants. Their foreign cultural customs made them “unassimilable,” and their strong work ethic and acceptance of extremely low wages “rendered them an economic threat and thus targets of racial violence”. In 1889, the United States Supreme Court upheld the act, stating that Chinese immigrants were “‘a different race . . . dangerous to [America’s] peace and security’”. In the composition of Angle of Repose (1971) Wallace Stegner drew heavily from the unpublished writings of Mary Hallock Foote (1847-1938)—a practice that shapes the novel in more ways than one. Stegner seems to have felt that the wholesale use of another’s writings is legitimate provided that appropriated text is worked into something original. Hence the strenuous originality of this tale of a Quaker woman whose incongruous marriage, following a loveless engagement, leads to an illicit dalliance which in turn leads directly to the death of her child. This creative graduate humanities project explores the development, impact, and challenges of pop culture conventions in West Virginia and the implications on the broader Appalachian region. Through in-depth interviews with organizers of eight regional conventions—including HerdCon, Tsubasacon, Causeacon, and the Mothman Festival— I examined the motivations behind organizing such events, the cultural and logistical hurdles faced, and the personal and communal rewards experienced by those involved. By investigating how these events foster community, promote regional tourism, and provide inclusive spaces for fandoms, the project highlights the importance of pop culture in shaping identity and engagement in rural Appalachia.
