Social activism ebbs and flows throughout American history. In the contemporary period, high visual coverage of activism has contributed to frustrations over the apparent decrease in change despite perceptions of increased participation. Young activists in the classroom ask questions to learn from their predecessors. This paper focuses on answering, “How can students create sustained change through social activism?” The present work recenters activism in the role of students and higher education institutions, noting their potential for creating change through a formula for future activists to engage with. The Mystical Kitchen: Feminist Magic And Alchemical Transformation In The Work Of Lenora Carrington, Theresa Burwell

Theses

This thesis analyzes the inherent feminism in alchemical and magical symbolism, particularly in representations of kitchens in the art and writing of Leonora Carrington. The kitchen has historically been viewed as a gendered space for domestic work. By subverting cultural and religious conventions, Carrington’s kitchen becomes a site for transmutation and feminine ritual. Using feminist discourse, formal art historical analysis, and the history of alchemical symbolism, this thesis asserts that Carrington’s imagery transforms the kitchen from an oppressive domestic space to a mystical laboratory of feminine power. This research demonstrates how Afrofuturistic art, combined with nature and scent, enables powerful methods to transform African Diaspora perceptions and support holistic wellness through sensory-emotional engagement. The project introduces The Next Narrative: An Immersive Journey Through Black Time as a multisensory immersive exhibition that combines Afrofuturistic aesthetics with Harlem Renaissance cultural elements. The exhibition presents salons as a sequence that allows visitors to experience time through visual, sonic, and atmospheric transitions. The three senses of touch, scent, and sound operate as fundamental tools for grounding and transformation, which disable analytical thinking while using bodily experiences to perform decolonial memory work. …

In today’s world of sedentary work and study, movement is more important than ever for both our bodies and our minds. These exhibit panel designs explore how public space can be a catalyst for physical wellbeing, creativity, and joy. Featuring a series of photo-based display panels, the exhibit showcases images of dance and movement in public spaces, captured and curated to highlight the often-overlooked role of urban design in supporting health. In this paper I use a dialectical materialist conception of ideology to analyze how it functions through language in Franz Kafka’s story The Metamorphosis. Beginning with Hegel’s account of consciousness as constituted through contradiction and its material reorientation in Marx and Engels, this project situates ideology within the social relations that shape human life. I then employ Evald Ilyenkov’s conception of material generation and Valentin Volosinov’s semiotic theory, arguing that signs constitute the material medium through which ideological meaning is produced and through which consciousness learns to misrecognize its own conditions. “A Tale of Two Eras” explores the Gretsch Jet Firebird electric guitar over the years with one example from 1956 under family leadership, and another from 1971 during the Baldwin era. Though both instruments share a bold red finish, their design and sound reflect shifting company visions and rock history. Used by artists like Malcolm Young, the 6131 Jet Firebird has helped shape the look and tone of rock music.

The Dominican population of New York City has experienced a significant decline since reaching its peak of 761,333 in 2021, falling by nearly 13% to 663,169 by 2024. This decline does not appear to be driven by reduced immigration from the Dominican Republic, as yearly arrivals have remained at relatively high levels between 2011 and 2023.

This Latino Data Project Report suggests that there has been an important emigration of Dominicans away from New York City to other areas of the United States. It is likely that the Dominican population of New York City will continue to decline into the …

Jennifer Mather has provided a comprehensive and fascinating overview of the various cognitive accomplishments of cephalopods and their sensory, behavioral, and neurophysiological attributes. The advances in our understanding of a clade that has been separated from vertebrate evolution by well over half a billion years is a testament to advances in both methodology and the questions we now feel free to address. Mather embeds her review in the issue of consciousness, which is certainly a perennial issue in mental evolution, going back to Romanes and earlier. 嶺南學報 Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

江户前期，東渡日本的浙江籍文人陳元贇與日蓮宗僧元政詩歌贈答往來，唱和盈帙並合編爲《元元唱和集》。該集是東亞漢文學史上的第一部中日人士唱和專集，既見證了士僧之間神交心契、塤篪相應的深厚友誼，又呈示了明清嬗替時期與江户漢文學交流互動的多元樣態和詩藝圖景。書翰往來與詩歌唱和交際功能的耦合，不僅在文學場域產生了雙重疊加效應，同時也俾使“元元唱和”活動得以跨時空延續。“元元”唱和詩歌在抒寫日常生活、自然四時、行旅思歸與讚頌親友之情等層面，多向度地映現了中日漢詩的同源異流特徵。作爲近世中日文化交流史上的詩誼典範，通過對“元元唱和”及唱和集内容的尋繹，可覘其中含藴著豐富的文學文化價值。

In the early Edo period, Chen Yuanyun (陳元贇, 1587-1671), a scholar from Zhejiang who traveled to Japan, exchanged poems with Gensei (元政, 1623-1668), a monk of the Nichiren sect (日蓮宗), and their poems were compiled into Yuan Yuan changhe ji (《元元唱和集》). This collection is the first special collection of Chinese and Japanese poetry and poetry in the history of East Asian Chinese literature. It not only bears witness to the deep friendship between a scholar and a monk, but also presents the diverse forms and poetic landscape of exchanges and interactions with Edo Chinese literature during the transition period …
