The Strange Death Of American Democracy: Judicial Supremacy And The New Constitutional Politics, 1910-1916, Logan Istre May 2020

The Strange Death Of American Democracy: Judicial Supremacy And The New Constitutional Politics, 1910-1916, Logan Istre

LSU Master's Theses

American constitutional politics reached a crisis point during the Progressive Era. At the center of the crisis was the question as to what the Constitution meant and who had the final word in interpreting it: The Supreme Court or the People of the United States. That fundamental question came to a head in the presidential election of 1912. The result of that contest was the confirmation of judicial supremacy in constitutional interpretation and a mortal blow the nation’s traditional popular constitutional politics. The ensuring consensus of judicial supremacy has defined the nation’s constitutional politics since, which has resulted in the …

How Not To Read Literature: The Nazis’ Appropriation Of The Merchant Of Venice, William W. White May 2020

How Not To Read Literature: The Nazis’ Appropriation Of The Merchant Of Venice, William W. White

Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee

In his essay “Reading Law, Reading Literature: Law as Language,” legal scholar James Boyd White extols the interpretive flexibility of literary and legal texts and warns against viewing literature as having “objective and determinate meanings.” White’s warning raises the question of whether a literary work's meaning can be used to promote a morally corrupt agenda. This paper seeks to explore the danger of reducing a work of literature's meaning to a determinate claim by focusing on how Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice was utilized by the Nazis as anti-Semitic political propaganda. Shakespeare’s play experienced a massive surge in popularity during …

Applying Modern Immunology To The Plague Of Ancient Athens, Juhi C. Patel May 2020

Applying Modern Immunology To The Plague Of Ancient Athens, Juhi C. Patel

Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee

During the 5th century BCE, ancient Athens and Sparta were involved in a major war during which an epidemic disease broke out in Athens, claiming the lives of a substantial part of the population. Although the ancient Greek historian Thucydides provides a first-hand account of the symptoms of the plague, modern historians have not been able to definitively identify the pathogen that caused the deadly epidemic. In 1994, a burial tomb of Athens was unearthed that unveiled the likely remains of plague victims. In 2005, scientists conducted molecular testing on the dental remains and used suicide PCR to compare …

Ashby, Rickie Zayne, B. 1949 (Mss 699), Manuscripts & Folklife Archives

Manuscript Collection Finding Aids

Finding aid only for Manuscripts Collection 699. Rickie Z. Ashby, a native of Ohio County, amassed this material as he worked on various historical and genealogical research projects. The chief focus of the collection is the vigilante group known as the Possum Hunters, which operated in the first quarter of the twentieth century in various western Kentucky counties, chiefly Butler, Muhlenberg, Ohio, and Daviess counties. Secondary emphasis is on other vigilante groups in southcentral Kentucky, including the Night Riders.

Opinionated Poets, Opinionated Lovers: Callimachus And Martial On Social And Sexual Behavior, Charlotte Houghton May 2020

Opinionated Poets, Opinionated Lovers: Callimachus And Martial On Social And Sexual Behavior, Charlotte Houghton

Classical Mediterranean and Middle East Honors Projects

This paper examines ancient conceptions of social behavior, using the works of two epigrammatists, Callimachus and Martial. Both poets lived under empires (Ptolemaic and Roman, respectively), and their writing engages with ideas of imperial power. I argue that Martial and Callimachus reinforce ideas of proper social behavior under empire, especially in the ways that imperial and public opinion influenced the expected behavior for women and sexual conduct of people of all genders. The epigrams themselves are evidence of these behavioral precepts, and epigrammatic tendencies aid in their interpretation. This paper provides a better sense of society’s behavioral expectations, bringing us …

(Re-)Making The State: Religious Zionism, Religious Violence, And Israel In The 21st Century, Abe Asher May 2020

(Re-)Making The State: Religious Zionism, Religious Violence, And Israel In The 21st Century, Abe Asher

Religious Studies Honors Projects

Israel’s triumph and seizure of land in the Six-Day War paved the way for a religious Zionist movement based around territorial conquest exemplified by the ideology of Meir Kahane. Over the next 30 years, but particularly during the Oslo period in the mid-1990s, that movement organized and used targeted religious violence to gain power and solidify its place in Israeli society. Building on Shaul Magid’s work, I propose that Kahane’s ethics of violence have been adopted by or allowed to flourish within the modern State of Israel — a response to historic and present Jewish precarity centered on ethnocentric survival.

The Transition Of Guanyin: Reinterpreting Queerness And Buddha Nature In Medieval East Asia, Robert Wilf May 2020

The Transition Of Guanyin: Reinterpreting Queerness And Buddha Nature In Medieval East Asia, Robert Wilf

Religious Studies Honors Papers

Avalokitesvara, better known by the Chinese name of Guanyin, is perhaps the second most pervasive figure in all of Buddhism after the historical Buddha himself. Part of this popularity comes from his adaptability and willingness to change to order to save everyone, no matter what part of society they might be from. It is thanks to this adaptability that Guanyin’s iconography varies wildly by region, with much of Theravada and tantric Buddhism depicting him as a man, while Mahayana Buddhism tends to revere her as the patron of women. From their earliest description, Guanyin was known to transcend boundaries to …

Finding A Common Thread, Jacqueline Parkins May 2020

Finding A Common Thread, Jacqueline Parkins

Master of Arts in English Plan II Graduate Projects

This portfolio investigates how the author’s personality type influences her teaching and reveals a common thread amongst four written pieces. Two of the projects are research-based; BookTubing as a form of reader response theory is explored, while abuse in Sharp Objects is analyzed. The other two papers are teaching-based; the author describes how she uses The Five People You Meet in Heaven in her classroom, and select texts from Poe are incorporated using psychoanalytic criticism.

Piety And Mayhem: How Extremist Groups Misuse Religious Doctrine To Condone Violence And Achieve Political Goals, Noah Garber May 2020

Piety And Mayhem: How Extremist Groups Misuse Religious Doctrine To Condone Violence And Achieve Political Goals, Noah Garber

Religious Studies Honors Papers

This thesis examines the way in which various groups have used religion as a justification for violent action towards political ends. From the Irgun, which carried out terrorist acts in Palestine, to the Palestinian Islamist organization Hamas, which has waged war on Israel, to the Buddhist leadership of Myanmar, which has waged a genocidal campaign against Rohingya Muslims living in the country, these groups have employed a narrow interpretation of their religious texts as a means to justify the actions they take. It is explained that it is not the compulsion of religious doctrine itself that is to blame, rather, …

More Than Just Wicked: The Tales Of Female Criminals In 17th- Century London, Savannah Resendes May 2020

More Than Just Wicked: The Tales Of Female Criminals In 17th- Century London, Savannah Resendes

Honors Program Theses and Projects

In 17th-century London, where women were bound to strict social rules and regulations, those who break free from these strict rules are often viewed with suspicion. Some may even call these women wicked as they stray away from what is expected of them. There was also surge of women committing crimes in this time period, which inspired literature to follow the same trend. Female criminals were often represented as sinful and wicked monsters of the time, showing people exactly what not to do if they want to fit in. However, in several specific literary texts set in 17th-century England these …
