It's The Funerals I Missed Which Haunt Me The Most, Arno Goetz May 2020

It's The Funerals I Missed Which Haunt Me The Most, Arno Goetz

Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers

What makes a photograph great? This is the central question which guides my research, and I answer this question in two parts. The first element is the structure of the photograph, which Robert Adams addresses in his collection of essays, Beauty in Photography: Essays in Defense of Traditional Values. With the guiding principle that structure can provide harmony in an image, I develop a collection of guidelines for composing images and name them the “Rules of Clarity.” The purpose of these rules is to help photographers create harmonious compositions, free from distractions. When a photograph has few distractions, it …

Twisted Truths In Memories, Jiyoon Kang May 2020

Twisted Truths In Memories, Jiyoon Kang

Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers

Memory— fragments of minds that are stored to remember the past and information— plays a huge role in human development. Humans interact with each other based on past experiences. These memories are part of our personalities. Flashbulb memory, a highly detailed snapshot of a moment, can even be life changing, because that memory becomes an essential part of “you.” In Twisted Truths in Memories, my body of work aspires to explore the question: what happens to memory when strong emotions are involved? How does that relate to a photograph, especially when photographs are intended to demonstrate the truth? The body …

Unraveling Memory Through Childhood Relics, Franchesca Rousseas May 2020

Unraveling Memory Through Childhood Relics, Franchesca Rousseas

Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers

The formation of memory is a universal experience that occurs at an individual level. Memory is intangible and abstract, but it can be tied to physical objects such as photographs. These objects may remain the same throughout the course of our lives, but our memories are subject to change. Information is inevitably lost or altered over time, as our minds are more pliable than they are rigid. These alterations result in the desire to reconstruct and reinterpret past events given the information that is still accessible. Focusing on objects of domesticity that trigger childhood memories, I reveal how the act …

Making Nebraska: The Pawnee, The United States, And The Transformation Of Space, 1803-1854, Ethan Reavis Bennett May 2020

Making Nebraska: The Pawnee, The United States, And The Transformation Of Space, 1803-1854, Ethan Reavis Bennett

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Making Nebraska is a history of foreign relations and power politics between the Pawnee confederacy and the United States over the control and governance of the greater Platte Valley between 1803 and 1854. These groups never fought a war, but struggled over the meaning and use of power to control space at a transitional moment of North American history. While nominally part of the United States post-1803, the region remained outside the federal territorial system. Yet, this space was central to larger strategic and policy concerns over Indian Removal, territorial expansion, and the survival of the Pawnee as a nation. …

É̉Tienne De Beaumont, Surrealist Dance, And Transformations In The Paris Avant-Garde, 1913-1938, Amanda Holly Beresford May 2020

É̉Tienne De Beaumont, Surrealist Dance, And Transformations In The Paris Avant-Garde, 1913-1938, Amanda Holly Beresford

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation puts into conversation the career of the aristocratic French patron and would-be impresario of modernism, Count Étienne de Beaumont, and the conflicted relationship between Surrealism and dance in Paris during the period between the two World Wars. Beaumont and Surrealism represent respectively an older, reactionary, and a newer, radical, manifestation of the avant-garde in French culture. Beaumont’s flamboyant self-performance— his eccentric personal style, his extravagant costume balls, his wide network of associates in the Parisian artworld, and his ambitions as a Maecenas to rival Diaghilev—establish him as a central figure of reactionary modernism in the 1920s. This tendency …

The Object Of Affection: Metamorphosis And The Unbound Subject In Early Modern English Literature, Emily Barth May 2020

The Object Of Affection: Metamorphosis And The Unbound Subject In Early Modern English Literature, Emily Barth

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This project explores examples of metamorphoses in early modern English literature, and argues that metamorphosis becomes a means of affective expression for characters who are otherwise constrained. The Ovidian assault on the firm distinction between subject and object tells us something about affective life in the early modern world – and perhaps especially, if not exclusively, the affective life of early modern women. My primary texts include Thomas Lodge’s Scillae’s Metamorphosis and William Shakespeare’s Rape of Lucrece; Edmund Spenser’s Faerie Queene, Book III Cantos 10-12, and Book IV through Canto 10; Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale and John Lyly’s Woman in …

Oscar Levant: Pianist, Gershwinite, Middlebrow Media Star, Caleb Taylor Boyd May 2020

Oscar Levant: Pianist, Gershwinite, Middlebrow Media Star, Caleb Taylor Boyd

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Following George Gershwin’s death in 1937, his friend and fellow pianist Oscar Levant (1906-1972) constructed a multifaceted professional career across many forms of modern media that not only helped him build and maintain his popular status as a Gershwinite, but also helped establish Gershwin’s piano music in the American concert hall canon. For nearly twenty years, Levant – more often than any other pianist – performed Rhapsody in Blue and the Concerto in F in concert halls, in outdoor stadia, on radio, and in films. He first came to national attention in 1938 as a regular panelist on the radio …

Feeling Women's Cuir Cultural Production: Reparative Criticisms, Temporal Displacements, Francesca Dennstedt May 2020

Feeling Women's Cuir Cultural Production: Reparative Criticisms, Temporal Displacements, Francesca Dennstedt

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

In Feeling Women’s Cuir Culture: Reparative criticisms, Temporal Displacements I identify cuir moments, that is instances scattered through time when heteropatriarchal structures are troubled to later use that troubling either as a political force or an epistemological moment. I argue that women’s cuir cultural production uses negative feelings to unmake normative structures; therefore, keywords in this production are able to reorient us to empathetic practices of cultural criticism. Throughout a diverse corpus that ranges from the analysis of canonical literary figures such as Inés Arredondo to visual culture and fashion, from a Brazilian graphic novel to drag performances in the …

From The Papers Of One Still Living: Kierkegaard And British Literature, 1932-1995, Asher Gelzer-Govatos May 2020

From The Papers Of One Still Living: Kierkegaard And British Literature, 1932-1995, Asher Gelzer-Govatos

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation traces the impact of the life, work, and thought of the nineteenth-century Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard on British authors of the mid-twentieth century. Following the translation of Kierkegaard’s writings into English in the mid-1930s, British intellectual life underwent a Kierkegaard boom, but Kierkegaard’s impact lingered long after his initial introduction in the build up to World War II. In sketching Kierkegaard’s importance to a handful of midcentury authors – Aldous Huxley, Graham Greene, Muriel Spark, Flann O’Brien, W. H. Auden, and R. S. Thomas – I show that Kierkegaard remained connected to a sense of “crisis” in British …

The Pathology Of Passion: Lovesickness In Medieval Iberian Literature And Medicine, Janelle Elizabeth Neczypor May 2020

The Pathology Of Passion: Lovesickness In Medieval Iberian Literature And Medicine, Janelle Elizabeth Neczypor

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

My dissertation examines the changes in love literature and notions of lovesickness in Iberia between the thirteenth and early sixteenth centuries in order to demonstrate how alterations in medieval portrayals of lovesickness reflect larger transformations in medicine, politics, and the medieval worldview. Early didactic literature treats love as a hygienic habit that must be learned through guides illustrating proper and improper love, while fifteenth- and sixteenth-century texts often depict love as an illness to be cured and avoided. During the High and Late Middle Ages, plagues and illnesses, medical translations into Latin and Romance languages, and the rise of university-educated …

The Good, The Bad, And The In-Between: A Study Of Moral Agency, Nicholas Schuster May 2020

The Good, The Bad, And The In-Between: A Study Of Moral Agency, Nicholas Schuster

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Beginning from the plain thought that some instances of good moral agency are better than others while some bad ones are worse, not just in degree but in kind, this dissertation adopts Aristotle’s taxonomy of agent states: virtue, continence, incontinence, and vice. Noting, however, that certain puzzles arise from the standard Aristotelian conceptions of these states, this project develops alternative psychological accounts of them, and the key differences between them, which together provide a framework for a comprehensive alternative theory of moral agency. Chapter Two notes that the psychological difference between virtue and continence is commonly understood, in the Aristotelian …

Sustaining The Republic: The Power Of Political Prints By Honoré Daumier, Édouard Manet, André Gill, And Alfred Le Petit, Maxime Valsamas May 2020

Sustaining The Republic: The Power Of Political Prints By Honoré Daumier, Édouard Manet, André Gill, And Alfred Le Petit, Maxime Valsamas

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The fight for the liberty of the press was an ongoing struggle in France since the French Revolution in 1789 and it remained a factor until July 1881, when liberal press laws were enacted by the Republican officials in charge of governing the country at the time. The press was the life and soul of political life in nineteenth-century France. Prints formed a core currency of communication; they were the most important vehicle of visual information as they reached a far greater percentage of the population than did artworks in other media, and they had the force to unite people. …

Texts, Language, And History In The Madhab-Law Tradition: A Study Of The ShāfiʿĪ School, Tarek Ghanem May 2020

Texts, Language, And History In The Madhab-Law Tradition: A Study Of The ShāfiʿĪ School, Tarek Ghanem

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis advances the study of the legal literature from the madhhab-law tradition by way of studying the Shāfiʿī literary tradition and its two most authoritative classics. These two works are al-Nawawī’s (d. 676/1278) digest Minhāj al-ṭālibīn and Ibn Ḥajar al-Haytamī’s (d. 974/1567) commentary on it, Tuḥfat al-minhāj. This study will provide a typology of the development of the Shāfiʿī juristic texts. The typology is based on an indigenous and coherent periodization centered around an analysis of the intellectual and social developments within the Shāfiʿī legal tradition, not the classical Eurocentric periodization scheme. The main objective of this typology is …

Encumbered By Stage Fright Or I’M Not Sure Why I Did That, Chris Scott May 2020

Encumbered By Stage Fright Or I’M Not Sure Why I Did That, Chris Scott

Graduate School of Art Theses

I hope to be as honest as possible. I’m hoping to be the star of the show. This is a series of onanistic musings, a rambling narrative that oscillates between truth and fabrication. There are instances of earnestness paired with ostentatious exaggeration. The frequent leaps from subject to subject, often seemingly unrelated to one another, reflect the ineluctably scatterbrained headspace that dictates how I operate in the studio, in every facet of life. Through this lens of storytelling I delve into a few artists, like Bruce Nauman, and rock and roll musicians, like Lou Reed, who I have been unable …

My Favorite Things, Alexander Klein May 2020

My Favorite Things, Alexander Klein

Graduate School of Art Theses

In this thesis I discuss my material practice as it relates to a history of still-life painting, and the cyclical recurrence of assemblage in western art history. The traditional still-life object is examined through the lens of my material-gathering process at estate sales. Objects reconstituted at these sales are the impetus for an investigation of the still-life object’s connection to magic, the mutability of meaning, and the fading American middle class. The use of these objects for assemblage sculptures in the studio prompts a discussion of the history of assemblage and found-object sculpture in Dada, Merz, Surrealism, and contemporary practice. …

“The Depth Within:” Black Women, Creative Media & The Aesthetics Of Interiority, Taylor Smith May 2020

“The Depth Within:” Black Women, Creative Media & The Aesthetics Of Interiority, Taylor Smith

Senior Honors Papers / Undergraduate Theses

In recent decades, Black women have taken more agency in the creation, transmission, and circulation of their creative works in the areas of literature, television, and digital media. This raises the question of what is it about Black women’s’ lives, in particular, that makes issues of representation, public depiction, and concealment so important? My research aims to explore this question by examining the means in which Black women conceptualize and contextualize themselves intimately and socially in those creative realms. I will accomplish this through the usage of scholar Elizabeth Alexander’s concept of the Black interior, which she defines as the …

Pyeongchang V Pyongyang: The Endless Game Of Inter-Korean Sports, Jack Anderson May 2020

Pyeongchang V Pyongyang: The Endless Game Of Inter-Korean Sports, Jack Anderson

Master's Projects and Capstones

Since their division, North and South Korea have fluctuated between a peaceful and chaotic relationship. This project explores the role of athletics within inter-Korean relations, using a multidimensional conceptual framework. In particular, this research examines the significant role sports play within each country’s political affairs, how this phenomenon has evolved, and the impact of sports on how South Koreans view their neighbors and the idea of reunification. Through in-depth historical and quantitative analysis, we see that sports can be understood as a political tool that has matured over time. Initially emerging as a means to gauge the status of affiliation …

Hollywood Media And The Model Minority Myth: The Representation Of Asian American Masculinity And Its Effects, Khanhlinh Le May 2020

Hollywood Media And The Model Minority Myth: The Representation Of Asian American Masculinity And Its Effects, Khanhlinh Le

Master's Projects and Capstones

Asian Americans are becoming one of the largest growing minority groups in the United States, almost surpassing the Latinx community. Asian Americans, however, are rarely ever represented in Hollywood films and are limited to stereotypical roles. Asian American actors have a difficult time finding roles playing characters that are three-dimensional and complex. While both Asian American men and women face this challenge, it seems that in Hollywood films and television shows, Asian American males are even less represented than females and are typically portrayed as the quiet nerd, sexy doctor, martial arts expert, or the villain. These media stereotypes impact …
