Sustainability And Climate In Religion: A Case Of Study Of The Green Churches Network In Africa (Toile Des Églises Vertes En Afrique) Teva, Marcel Ngirinshuti

Consensus

Faced with the ecological crisis, many churches are involved in the search for concrete solutions. Since 2016, the Green Churches Network in Africa (TEVA), a network of churches, denominational structures and associations, which are committed to caring for the "common home" (planet-earth) in Africa. This organization currently has (as of 2019) 1,808 parishes grouped into 19 churches in 12 African countries. The vision of TEVA is to reach 2020 green parishes by the end of 2020. Starting with the fact that ecological questions are often perceived as utopian and very complex, TEVA aims to promote knowledge of African ecological issues …

Women, Climate Change And Eco-Theology, Mary (Joy) Philip May 2020

Women, Climate Change And Eco-Theology, Mary (Joy) Philip

Consensus

The impact of climate change is not proportionate to the ones that contribute to it. It is the world’s poorest and those in vulnerable situations, especially women and children, who bear the brunt of environmental, economic and social shocks. This paper highlights the fact that women are disproportionately affected by climate change, when they are primarily the ones that have been caring for and preserving the earth. This paper also argues for the need for eco-consciousness and the increased participation of women in climate initiatives, as women have a theology and spirituality undergirded by eco-consciousness.

A Drawing A Day Keeps The Pandemic Away: Vol 6, University Of Nevada, Las Vegas

A Drawing a Day Keeps the Pandemic Away

The project is called A Drawing a Day Keeps the Pandemic Away. We created it on March 17th, which was the day when we realized that we weren’t going to be able to go back into the museum and continue installing the exhibitions we had been planning to open on March 27th. People were asking us what we, as an art museum, were going to do to reach out to the community during the pandemic shutdown and honestly we were wondering that ourselves, so we had an online brainstorming session and came up with the idea of posting a daily …

Recovering From Doing Research As A Survivor-Researcher, Dee E. Michell Dr May 2020

Recovering From Doing Research As A Survivor-Researcher, Dee E. Michell Dr

The Qualitative Report

In this paper I explore the research process I undertook to recover from research. For three years from 2013 I was involved in a research project exploring the history of foster care in Australia. At the end I was exhausted and suffering trauma symptoms I initially attributed to the difficulties of juggling a major research project while teaching and undertaking key administrative tasks. Reluctance to write up the research findings, however, made me reconsider this attribution and at the end of 2016 I set out to make sense of what had happened to make me feel so bad while undertaking …

A Critique Of Su Manshu From The Perspective Of Modern Buddhist Literature, Guilin Tan May 2020

A Critique Of Su Manshu From The Perspective Of Modern Buddhist Literature, Guilin Tan

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

After the New Culture and May Fourth movements, three major strands were present in the field of Su Manshu study: the coterie of the Southern Society, writers of the "New Literature", and authors on the new Buddhist literature. Among them, authors on the new Buddhist literature primarily focused on such dimensions as (1) Su Manshu's character projection as a Buddhist, (2) Su's contribution to the development of Buddhism, (3) the affinity between Su's personalities and his art, and (4) Su's literary appeal to young Buddhist, etc. The significance of their research was several-folded. They argued for Su Manshu's due position …

A Parody Of The Romance Of The West Chamber In The Plum In A Golden Vase, Yuanyuan Feng May 2020

A Parody Of The Romance Of The West Chamber In The Plum In A Golden Vase, Yuanyuan Feng

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The parody of The West Chamber runs through the narrative of The Plum in the Golden Vase. This parody is demonstrated in the words and actions of characters, as well as in the descriptions of specific scenes and plot. The so-called "parody" is not only a degradation, de-coronation and desecration of the original text, but also a subversion of the narrative of gifted scholars and beauties, with characteristics of "deconstructionism" and "irony". The aesthetic style thus formed shows exactly the real symptoms of the time-carnival of the body and disappearance of taboo.

Confucianism, Ancient-Style Prose And Current Affairs: The History Of Chinese Ancient-Style Prose From The Perspective Of Japanese Sinology, Weizhao Chen May 2020

Confucianism, Ancient-Style Prose And Current Affairs: The History Of Chinese Ancient-Style Prose From The Perspective Of Japanese Sinology, Weizhao Chen

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

From the Tang dynasty onwards, ancient Chinese literature and literary theories have influenced the Sinophone cultural sphere, especially in East Asian countries such as Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. During the Edo and Meiji periods, conceptions of Chinese ancient style prose were also incorporated into the framework of Japan's intellectual and cultural constructions. Yet, Japanese writers acceptance of and rejection to the paradigms in ancient style prose were closely related to their current affairs in socio political, economic, and cultural dimensions. Remolded by Japanese culture, Chinese literary theories became localized and started to influence the literary creations and theories in Japan. …

Distanciation And Artistic Practice: How The Concept Of Masses Was Constructed In Althusser's Literary Criticism, Ju Huo May 2020

Distanciation And Artistic Practice: How The Concept Of Masses Was Constructed In Althusser's Literary Criticism, Ju Huo

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

One of Louis Pierre Althusser's contributions to Marxism was to clarify the concept of the political "masses", affirming that the masses of all classes united in struggle functioned as both the departure of action and the end of theory. He thus loomed as a unique presence in the intellectual development of Western Marxism. From the perspective of literary criticism, this paper focuses on Althusser's re-positioning of issues such as author, form and defamiliarization in contemporary critical theory, and on his using the distanciation theory to explicate howideological practice surrounding mass movement intervenes reality and functions in it. The paper tries …

Innovation In Temporal And Spatial Narration Of The Plum In The Golden Vase And Its Significance To The History Of Fiction, Jinju Wang, Zhiwei Du May 2020

Innovation In Temporal And Spatial Narration Of The Plum In The Golden Vase And Its Significance To The History Of Fiction, Jinju Wang, Zhiwei Du

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Although The Plum in the Golden Vase is a derivation of the episode “Wu Song kills his sister-in-law” in The Water Margin, its temporal and spatial narration breaks through the restrictions of the original text. In terms of historical background, The Plum in the Golden Vase intentionally blends the Song and the Ming dynasty, which sets a precedent for profound reflection of the times in popular novels. The coherent chronological narrative and the continuous festival writing in this work also demonstrates the ups and downs as well as the prosperity and decline through the comparison of before and after. The …

Liveness And Mediatization: Theater In The Age Of Media, Qian Li May 2020

Liveness And Mediatization: Theater In The Age Of Media, Qian Li

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

This paper focuses on the transformation of discourses on liveness and mediatization in theatre studies and theatrical productions, and tries to describe their historical contexts, intellectual backgrounds and social implications. It attempts to clarify the historical context in which the discourse of liveness is constructed, and claims that, for the theatre in an age of media, liveness and mediatization have shared theoretical constructs, and together they bring forth the richness of theatrical performances. In the current age of media, not only had liveness been drastically changed by media but also the live experience has been mediated, while the tension between …

On The Theory Of Literary "Craftsmanship" During The Six Dynasties, Dongxiao Yang May 2020

On The Theory Of Literary "Craftsmanship" During The Six Dynasties, Dongxiao Yang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The literary theories during the Six Dynasties often compared writers to "craftsmen", who were proficient in handicraft. Referring to the well developed art theory during this period, the connotation of "craftsman" can be considered in four dimensions: (1) a close adherence to the norm of literary styles, (2) an emphasis on language skills, (3) a balance between expressions of literary talents and emotions, and (4) a combination of conformance to rules and spirit of change. The theory of literary "craftsmanship" not only demonstrated an emphasis on writing techniques, but also disclosed its interactions with the lyrical and aesthetic functions of …

T. J. Clark's Modernist Art Theory, Yi Zhuge May 2020

T. J. Clark's Modernist Art Theory, Yi Zhuge

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Sticking to Marxism, art historian T.J. Clark analyzes modern art from perspectives of politics and society. Through comparative analysis, this article extracts his theory on modernist art. According to Clark, modernism arose, developed and declined in the historical coordinate system which consisted of the bourgeoisie, technological reason, the society of spectacle and socialist movement. As a response to modernity, modernist art was a structural model to examine the representation of modernity by visual form, which also explored and embodied the origin of the experience of modernity. Modernist art intended to signify the social reality in the crisis of representation, and …

The Ideal Qualities And Their Value In Niu Yunzhen's Historical Criticism, Zhouyin Huang May 2020

The Ideal Qualities And Their Value In Niu Yunzhen's Historical Criticism, Zhouyin Huang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Early Qing historian Niu Yunzhen concluded that grave elegance of style, sophisticated maturity of expression and inspired originality of appeal were three foremost qualities of the history-writing genre, through his reading of Han historian Sima Qian's exemplary work Records of the Grand Historian. With these qualities as criteria for historical criticism, Niu Yunzhen not only reinforced the status of Records of the Grand Historian as a classic, but also attached importance on emotion as an intrinsic attribute of historical writing. As a result, the expression of personal feelings was gradually legitimized and eventually became equally important to narrative method and …

Exploring The Truths And Fabrications Of Sir John Mandeville, Jake Sanborn May 2020

Exploring The Truths And Fabrications Of Sir John Mandeville, Jake Sanborn

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The Travels of Sir John Mandeville presents a unique and nuanced perspective of the Eastern World during the time of the Crusades. By critically analyzing the still-unknown author’s depictions of the Eastern lands and their peoples, I demonstrate that it is possible to gain a deeper understanding of the status of Christianity during the late 14th century. The Travels comments upon the concepts of Eastern religions and cultural practices in a way that is remarkable and surprising — instead of reacting to such topics with hostility or aggression, the likely-Christian author of The Travels is willing to learn from those …

Film And The Culture Of Memory In Argentina, Theresa Jo Thomas May 2020

Film And The Culture Of Memory In Argentina, Theresa Jo Thomas

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This project examines the culture of memory in modern-day Argentina in the context of the last civic-military dictatorship that took place between 1976 and 1983. Argentina is a country with a long history of filmmaking, a tradition that was suddenly interrupted during the long and dark seven years of military rule. Since the arrival of democracy in 1983, however, filmmakers have explored the trauma created by this period and have created a significant record of films that deal with loss, memory, and trauma. This thesis analyzes several films produced between the return of democratic rule and present-day Argentina in order …

Matrons, Mothers, And Monsters: The Heroine In Beowulf, Grendel, And The Mere Wife, Grace Lucier May 2020

Matrons, Mothers, And Monsters: The Heroine In Beowulf, Grendel, And The Mere Wife, Grace Lucier

College Honors Program

This thesis examines the relationship between gender and heroism in the Beowulf tale and two of its modern retellings. It includes an exploration of the medieval gender roles of the original epic using Seamus Heaney and E. Talbot Donaldson’s translations. This thesis also addresses the ways in which some characters disturb gender binaries and social roles — especially in the case of Grendel’s mother. The second and third chapters focus on two retellings of the Beowulf text respectively: John Gardner’s Grendel , told from the perspective of the monster Grendel; and Maria Dahvana Headley’s The Mere Wife , which is …

Anorexia Nervosa And Bulimia Nervosa As Expressions Of Shame In A Post-Feminist, Emily Kearns May 2020

Anorexia Nervosa And Bulimia Nervosa As Expressions Of Shame In A Post-Feminist, Emily Kearns

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Anorexia nervosa and Bulimia nervosa are heavily gendered conditions affecting women to a far greater degree than men in a post-millennium Western setting. The psychologistic and medicalized approaches to studying and treating these disorders do not account for socio-cultural and epistemic preferences. This paper draws a connection between shame (as emotion and affect) and these gendered disorders. Further, this work analyzes neo-liberalism, post-feminism, and consumerism as predatory elements of Western culture especially affecting women.
