While serving overseas in the early to mid-twentieth century, American servicemen often engaged in relationships with foreign women and wanted to bring these women back to the United States as wives. Following the Korean War, many of the more than 6,000 women who married American military men immigrated to the United States. Often referred to as GI War Brides, these women faced discrimination, tried to assimilate into American culture, and struggled to share their stories. Through the examination of government documents, personal stories, and cultural expectations, this paper argues that Korean War Brides’ experiences in America differed very little from …

Joseph Piccillo’s Wall Painting L. J. M. #5, (ca. 1965) is a large mixed media painting on canvas (dimensions) owned by the Nichols School in Buffalo, NY. Due to its poor condition, it was brought to the Garman Art Conservation Program for technical analysis and treatment. Imaging and scientific analysis was used to identify the variety of materials present in the largescale mixed-media painting. An artist interview was conducted to learn about Piccillo’s style throughout his career and acquire more information related to the materials and construction of the painting. The Conservation Treatment And Technical Analysis Of A 20th Century Painting By Haitian Artist J.E. Gourgue, Melissa Amundsen

This project describes the conservation treatment and technical analysis of a painting on Masonite with an unknown title by Haitian artist Jacques-Enguerrand Gourgue. Imaging and scientific analysis aided in the identification of the artist’s materials which informed the treatment of this fragile painting. Prior to treatment, the piece exhibited severe flaking, widespread losses, and loose paint fragments resting on the surface, requiring it to be stored horizontally. Following treatment, the painting is now in stable condition, can once again be exhibited vertically and is aesthetically suitable for display. Background research briefly discusses the artist’s background, affiliations, and imagery.

A framed 19th century Scottish pastel portrait on paper, severely damaged after a fall, was admitted to the Garman Art Conservation Department at Buffalo State College for examination, research, and treatment. Conservation photography helped in documenting and understanding the extent of the damage. Research helped to reinforce the attribution of the drawing to Sir Daniel MacNee and to learn more about the man in the portrait: Robert Maxwell Jr. The drawing was torn significantly in its wood strainer as a result of the original glazing breaking and has suffered loss of media due in part to abrasion. Georges Braque was a prolific creator in many mediums. Throughout his oeuvre, rapport and an attention to surface are essential components of his artistic style. These are both found in Profil, a collotype and pochoir print that is part of a larger portfolio: Espaces – 13 Dessins, Lavis, Aquarelles created in 1957. Diagnostic imaging, materials analyses using scanning X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and spectrophotometry, and comparative examination of two other editions of Profil revealed that extensive light damage and exposure to moisture had resulted in damages that interfered with the original rapport and surface quality of the print. This presentation focuses on the aspects of problem-based learning within writing courses and the interconnectedness to sociocultural theory and its impacts on service learning and reflection. This presentation highlights service learning as an interactive learning tool for students to incorporate problem based learning and introduces reflection as a means of assessment. Through reflection of service learning students can understand the validity of sociocultural impacts within the world around them to help better prepare them to problem solve through writing applications. The goal then is to actively engage students on larger scale by introducing real-world problems and introducing cultural impacts.

The subject of this study is two paintings by Bartholomeus Spranger titled Glaucus and Scylla (Fig. 1) and Hermaphroditus and the Nymph Salmacis (Fig. 2). Building upon the work of scholars who have argued for a possible alchemical interpretation of at least one of the paintings in the context of its execution for Emperor Rudolf II, this study goes beyond merely suggesting an alchemical connection, and argues that the two paintings, forming a pendant pair, depict two attempts at the alchemist’s magnum opus—one a failure, the other a success. Set against the backdrop of the segmented power of the Double Monarchy of the Austro- Hungarian Empire, artistic Secession movements reminiscent of the influential movement in Vienna took shape in the smaller cities of the Southern Slavic crownland territories of the Empire. However, despite strong cultural ties to Vienna and other large artistic centers like Munich, Secession took on different ideological and artistic forms in Zagreb and Ljubljana than in the imperial capital. Femicide is the killing of a woman by a man solely on the account of her gender. It is the ultimate form of gender violence that includes sexual, mental, or physical suffering. As a woman who exited after seven years in licensed commercial sexual exploitation in Canada, I share my reflections on my experience, which led to the development of the Insights from Sex Trade Experienced Persons (InSTEP) Model. The model was constructed based on interviews with “service providers” in the sex trade. Twelve exited women share their experiences inclusively. InSTEP is geared toward a population of quasi-autonomous providers who have alternate economic options. Three levels are introduced in the InSTEP model to describe the continuum of agency among service providers; Level 1: trafficked/controlled; Level 2: quasi-autonomous; Level 3: autonomous. This chapter, composed of three parts by three different authors, proposes that one of the many possible ways that dance might embody philosophic thought and discourse is via embodying ethical practice. Each author contributes a different perspective on the relationship between dance and ethical activity. The perspectives can be read both as separate ideas and as interrelated thoughts. Einav Katan-Schmid views "dance" as a metaphor for "embodied ethics." She analyzes dance as an embodied activity of decision-making that regulates the tension between co-existing physical dynamics. This thesis aims to illuminate early medieval anxieties about sex, procreation, and congenital physical difference by applying a lens of critical disability theory to the Old English Wonders of the East, primarily as it survives in the eleventh-century manuscript, London, British Library, Cotton MS Tiberius B.v. This thesis focuses on the textual and illustrative representation of one Wonder, the Blemmye—an approximately eight-foot-tall, eight-foot-wide androgynous humanoid, whose eyes and mouth are in their chest and who does not possess a head—as a historic embodiment of what disability meant in relation to the early medieval English worldview. In his 2018 book A Theory of Virtual Agency, Robert Hatten briefly describes the potential to analyze atonal music through the lens of musical forces. These musical forces are phenomenological sensations listeners experience, akin to physical forces felt in daily life. Larson (2012) categorizes and explains these forces as gravity, magnetism, and inertia, but his work only applies them to tonal music.

The purpose of this study is to explore the role of music through the similarities and differences of an Analytical Music Therapy (AMT) and Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy (NRMT) trainee. The study employed a first-person research design and thematic analysis to assess three AMT and three NRMT personal therapy sessions. Music as well as the verbal interactions during the music therapy sessions were transcribed and analyzed. The hegemonic values that were represented in 1960s mass media were heavily reinforced by the Pop Art movement. Male Pop artists have often been viewed as genius, while the women were pushed aside to reside within the margins of the Pop canon. On the verso of the last leaf of a twelfth-century manuscript containing the poetry of Hilarius, a student of Abelard, appears a faux charter purporting to have been issued by Arthur, king of the Britons, in the hundredth year of his immortality. In the act, Arthur thanks the descendants of his British subjects for their fidelity and grants them an exclusive franchise to fish in secret rivulets. The privilege contains two prohibitions: one prohibiting Britons from wearing shoes and the other prohibiting them from owning cats. This thesis explores the experiences of women who were members of the Sisters of Loretto, an American congregation of women religious, in the years around the Second Vatican Council (1962 – 65). It argues that the ideas of nouvelle théologie – a movement among progressive European Catholic scholars aimed at reconnecting faith with lived experience – had a profound impact on how the Sisters of Loretto interpreted the Council’s directives. This thesis examines the role of the semiotic concept ostension in folk dance, specifically in Native American hoop dance. Although the discipline of folklore is well-versed in ostension, folk dance has not been examined through this lens. I argue that dance is a form of ostension, of demonstrating a narrative, and this is especially apparent within Native American hoop dancing. I begin with a brief history of Native Americans in North America before discussing the origins of powwows, intertribal culture, and hoop dance. This paper examines the shifting portrayals of Pacific Islanders in World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) across three generations. As both a popular and historically racially problematic venue, WWE’s politically incorrect programming has played an underappreciated and under examined role in representing the USA. Although many different groups have been portrayed by gross stereotypes in WWE, this paper uses the family of Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson—the Samoan Dynasty—as a case study. My thesis explores the culture surrounding the 2018 reboot of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy in relation to contemporary arguments in masculinity studies about the costs of hegemonic masculinity, performance, and identity. This paper examines how Queer Eye carefully creates space where heteronormative men can safely express emotional vulnerability and embody a more functional masculinity that expands beyond the bounds of hegemonic performance. The first part focuses on the experiences of Japanese American adolescents who were interned with their parents at the Central Utah Relocation Center during World War II. Although these students were born in the United States and therefore U.S. citizens, they were considered "Japanese" by the U.S. government and many of its citizens. When the U.S. government forcibly removed Japanese American youth and their families from the West Coast, this heavily affected Japanese American youth's perceptions of themselves and the country of their birth.
