Abstract: Galadriel is perceived in different, sometimes contradictory ways both within the world of Middle-earth and the world of Tolkien scholarship. In some ways, she is a liminal figure, on the threshold between Middle-earth and Valinor, and between secular and sacred influences from the primary world Tolkien actually lived in. One neglected context that may help readers to understand Tolkien’s characterization of Galadriel is the medieval cult of the saints.

The cult of the saints provides specific practices and beliefs that shaped how Tolkien consciously characterized Galadriel as saint-like, especially in terms of her beauty, holiness, and power. Her saintliness …

This thesis examines the text and images contained in James Van Der Zee and Camille Billops’s seminal photobook The Harlem Book of the Dead (1978). The title, frontispiece, and introduction, combined with Van Der Zee’s funerary portraits, illuminate the connection between African-American rituals of death and Pan-Africanism. While these two concepts appear to be distinct, they are both predicated upon and intrinsically linked to key values in African American culture, including liberation and the meaning of community. God’S Forgiveness As Expressed In The Gospels, Rod Womer

This thesis examines the twenty-two passages in the Gospels in which God’s forgiveness of human sin is explicitly addressed. Using modern textual, literary, form, redaction, and historical criticisms as exegetical tools, the examination maps out the development of these biblical vignettes so as to extract from the process an understanding of what the Gospel writers wanted to convey to Jesus’ followers about God’s forgiveness. Four distinct forgiveness modes were discovered: repentance leads to forgiveness (e.g. proclaim repentance and forgiveness to all nations in Lk 24:47), faith acts as a conduit to forgiveness (e.g. sinful woman kissing Jesus’ feet in Lk …

The viola came to prominence as a solo instrument relatively late compared to the violin and cello. As a result, the standard repertoire is more recent, consisting largely of twentieth century works. The standard repertoire continues to expand as new works are written and embraced by performers. One such work is the Hungarian composer György Kurtág's open ended collection of pieces for solo viola Signs, Games and Messages (1987-). Kurtág, born in 1926, is one of the most important composers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. His music is characterized by its brevity, fragmentation, ambiguity, and intertextuality. This instructional design paper introduces an instruction method called MovieTalk. Discussed are the reasons of MovieTalk application in class, the criteria of choosing appropriate MovieTalk materials, and the concerns for MovieTalk instruction. The design aims to explain the benefits of this comprehensible input method of Chinese language instruction of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. With the Disney cartoon film “Bridge” as an example, this design employs the backwards design to demonstrate how to deliver MovieTalk instructions step by step in class with the TPRS method and class activities.

This study aims to explore the effect of participation in extracurricular activities (ECAs) on Chinese language learning in Zimbabwe. The study employed survey design as the major research method. The questionnaire constructed by the researcher included ‘yes/no’, multiple choice and open-ended questions. A total of 45 students from the University of Zimbabwe participated in the study. The results indicate that more than 78% of students had some experience with ECAs and were aware of ECAs available through their university. Language-related ECAs included trips to China, luncheons at Chinese restaurants, games and competitions, movies, and language retreats. The majority of respondents …
