In March of 1940, Joseph Stalin ordered the execution of approximately five thousand Polish prisoners of war, setting off a chain of events leading to the Katyń Massacre. Buried in seven mass graves, these soldiers’ bodies remained undisturbed until German forces unearthed them several years later. Even more shocking to the Polish nation than this discovery was the revelation that one of the victims was a female military officer: Second Lieutenant in the Polish Air Force, Janina Lewandowska. Indeed, the presence of her body was at the center of a fifty-year cover-up.

This article develops a dilemma for Buddhist Reductionism that centers on the nature of normative reasons. This dilemma suggests that Buddhist Reductionism lacks the resources to make sense of normative reasons and, furthermore, that this failure may cast doubt on the plausibility of Buddhist Reductionism as a whole...Can Buddhist philosophy make sense of reasons? In this article, I have examined whether one important Buddhist view—Buddhist Reductionism— has the resources to justify the existence of reasons. My diagnosis is pessimistic. Recently, faculty and Writing Center staff at Marshall University partnered to improve undergraduate STEM students’ ability to clearly and efficiently communicate their knowledge of STEM concepts through discipline_specific writing conventions. We (Anna Rollins, the Writing Center director, and Kristen Lillvis, the English Graduate Programs director) corresponded with STEM faculty and coordinated writing classroom workshops in engineering, math, biology, geology, and computer science classrooms; we also hired and trained three graduate tutors who planned and facilitated each of the classroom writing workshops.1 The tutors had a minimum of one year experience tutoring in the Writing Center and had completed courses in …

Elizabeth Kent’S New Tales Of Botanical Friendship, Leila Walker

Publications and Research

Elizabeth Kent has been considered a rather minor figure in the Leigh Hunt circle. However, this examination of her previously unknown children’s tales illuminates how Kent’s generic crossings establish a common emphasis on observation in the realms of botany, pedagogy, and poetry while suggesting that what happens beyond the observable world might be equally generative. Taken as a whole, Kent’s work constitutes a previously unacknowledged challenge to the Cockney School’s almost fetishistic attachment to the social. The identification of New Tales brings into focus Kent’s efforts to systematize friendship through her writing and clarifies her ambiguous response to Cockney amiability.

Although the Azusa Street Revival, known for launching the modern Pentecostal Movement, was initially characterized by minority diversity in regard to leadership, it quickly splintered into three classic Pentecostal fellowships formed along racial lines. The research presented herein examines the racially segregated history of the Pentecostal Church in North America—acknowledging the need for the implementation of a biblically based theology of racial integration—and presents a four-step process in which minority leadership within individual Pentecostal churches is promoted, combatting the unbiblical ideology of a segregated body of Christ. This paper explores rape-revenge films released during the 1970s and 1980s, which coincided with the antirape movement, an extension of second-wave feminism that sought to bring attention to, and eliminate, rape from society. By analyzing how several films portray rape victims and their experiences with law enforcement, which I refer to as the woman-state axis, this paper shows how these films fail to reflect the feminist values of the time, and therefore cannot be classified as inherently feminist films.

The French Third Republic under Minister of Education Jules Ferry used public education to breach the sociopolitical divide between urban and rural France at the tail end of the nineteenth century. Ferry’s calls for secularization, centralization, and “republicanization” were countered by the Catholic Church, local governments, and rural families.

Despite its theatrical success, Dea Loher's Innocence faces a heated debate among German theatre and literary critics. Some regard it as a neorealist drama that has reached the highest level of the theatre, but others denounce it as a diffuse, kitschy portrayal of violence. The goal of this paper is to explore themes of the play to negotiate—against the claims of its existing theatre and literary criticism—more accurate critical guidelines of evaluating this theatrical work. The results of this study are expected to contribute to a better understanding of postmodernism and postdramatic theatre in general and of this postdramatic writing …

By purposefully sharing diverse and inclusive literature with children during their formative years, educators can help them develop ideals which are positively inclusive of others and which support positive self-understandings. This project, an ENGL 491 independent study supervised by Dr. Chris Foss, investigates the ways that the disability community is represented within literature, as well as how positive, diverse, and inclusive literary representations of disability can benefit this community and those around it. The aim of this work is twofold. First, it labors to retrieve from the past a normative account of speculative theological method, in protest of the anti-speculative fashions and attitudes that have prevailed among theologians since the Second Vatican Council. Second, and in tension with the first aim, this study outlines the respects in which conciliar and post-conciliar developments in history, anthropology, philosophy, and cultural analysis—the same developments that led to speculative theology’s fall from favor—are the means by which speculative theology might be renewed and made useful in theology today. Nearly all literary theories for a millennium have defined satire according to its linguistic clarity and moral certainty. Not until recently have theorists such as Dustin Griffin recognized that satire often comprises an ambiguity that moves it beyond the mere policing of established moral boundaries. This project considers how four sixteenth-century satirists—Thomas Wyatt, George Gascoigne, Thomas Deloney, and Thomas Nashe—exploited satire’s capacity for open-ended inquiry to address the rapid political and economic changes that typified the early modern period.
