According to the survey results, 57% of the survey respondents said no to the question, “Is the Japanese language educator community in North America diverse one?” (Mori, Hasegawa, Park, and Suzuki, this volume). This result suggests that the American Association of Teachers of Japanese (AATJ) as a professional organization needs to improve diversity within the field. What is a more important question is whether or not our organization and its membership as a whole embrace the value of diversity and put it into practice in every aspect of their profession on a daily basis. A New Twist On The “Un-African” Script: Representing Gay And Lesbian African Weddings In Democratic South Africa, Michael W. Yarbrough

Publications and Research

This essay examines the media coverage surrounding two African weddings of lesbian and gay couples in South Africa, as a lens onto the evolving cultural politics of black queerness in that country. Two decades after South Africa launched a world-leading legal framework for LGBTI protections, I argue that these media representations depict the growing inclusion of black LGBTIQ people as a process of bridging the supposed “gap” between homosexuality and African culture. This new “bridging the gap” script seemingly rejects the older, dominant script portraying homosexuality as intrinsically “un-African.” But I argue that it instead reproduces the “un-African” script in …

The Coca-Cola Company is widely known to spend billions of dollars on advertising. Many of these advertising campaigns center around the company's philanthropic efforts. In 2017, the Coca-Cola Foundation has helped to donate over $138 million to different organizations in order to give back to the community. I used data from this past completed year (2019) to see how much the Coca-Cola Foundation is contributing to specific causes. Currently, there is a push to eliminate the use of animals in all experimental settings. Animal rights organizations like PETA and the Animal Welfare Institute consistently advocate for the well-being of animals in many aspects, including in the laboratory setting. While it is necessary to eradicate the maltreatment of animals found in unregulated testing centers, it is important to distinguish the differences between testing and research involving animals. The focus of this research is to demonstrate that while it is essential to cut down on harmful testing, the use of animals in medical research is crucial.

The goal of this study was to research the connections between portrayals in television shows and real-life people with mental health conditions. In addition, another purpose was to conclude whether my initial thoughts, which include believing a minimal numbers of TV shows contain any positive effect on viewer mental health, were supported. Misperceptions about mental health, including a justified feeling to hide mental conditions, judge others for theirs, or use it as a way for humor, are often given in television shows when mental health is included in the story (Smith, et al. 2019). The average Latter-day Saint reader will chafe under its vocabulary, struggle through its detailed contributions to the study of secularism, and be at odds with its use of queer critique.
