This essay reflects on the Biblical passages used to create a vocational curriculum produced by the author's doctoral project. The call stories of Abraham, Joseph, Moses, and Ruth are examined to illustrate the experience of vocation. The essay is divided into three strands of thought: vocation as a journey, vocation as it is related to personal ability, and vocation as it is related to certainty.

Discernment: Theology and the Practice of Ministry

This essay reflects on the creation of a vocational curriculum produced by the author's doctoral project. The goal is to explore the value in vocational reflection among teenagers in youth groups, and to offer an example of how youth ministries may implement extended and holistic teaching programs regarding the theology of vocation.

This essay begins with an assessment of the ministry context. Second, It reviews templates for vocational curricula used on some college campuses and how the author implemented those strategies into the project. While analytic philosophy has led the charge in answering the problem of evil (i.e., POE), postmodern theology and movements like radical orthodoxy incite a response to POE from a postmodern perspective. With skepticism toward purely metaphysical answers to evil, this essay relies on the writings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and James K.A. Smith in order to offer a social, ecclesial, and non-rational response to the POE; furthermore, continental philosophy, postmodern theology, and social theory play a significant role in this paper. In general, this study was conducted to discuss about a classically trained singers in pop singing among professional singers in Malaysia. Therefore, this study is limited only to classically trained singers in singing modern pop’s genre based on vocal techniques and vocal health. The respondents consisted of 5 Malaysian singers who are well trained classically and have experienced in both education and music industry singing pop songs. “When Someone Sees Me, I Am Nothing Of The Norm”: Examining The Discursive Role Power Plays In Shaping Lgbtq+ Health Information Practices, Vanessa L. Kitzie, Travis L. Wagner, A. Nick Vera

Faculty Publications

This paper examines how discursive power shapes LGBTQ+ community health information practices. Informed by analysis of 10 information world maps drawn by SC LGBTQ+ community leaders, our findings indicate that while community can be a valuable construct to reject mainstream discourses of regulation and correction, it inevitably is fraught and not representative of all LGBTQ+ individuals. Findings can inform strategies for community leaders to facilitate more equitable information flow among members by identifying key structural elements impeding this flow at the community level.

Canadian Military History

This article explores the Second World War prisoner of war diary kept by William Allister, who served with C Force, the Canadian formation sent to garrison the British colony of Hong Kong in late 1941. After the Japanese victory on 25 December 1941, Allister and his fellow survivors endured several years of brutality, malnutrition and disease in the prison camps. In the face of nearly unbelievable hardship, Allister kept a detailed diary and created works of art that provide new insight into the shattering effects of his wartime imprisonment. Harris’S Scientists: Operational Research In Bomber Command, Randall Wakelam

This essay describes the contents of a unique post-war report, available online thorough LCMSDS, by the Bomber Command Operational Research Section (ORS) in which the scientists described their mandate, work and contributions to the RAF’s strategic and tactical bombing efforts against Germany. While ORS reports are extensively cited in various histories of the bombing campaign, the processes by which the scientists did their work are not widely known; this essay provides insights into these matters. The essay also gives historical and historiographical context for both reading the report and appreciating the work of Harris’s scientists.

First World War Internment In Canada: Enemy Aliens And The Blurring Of The Military/Civilian Distinction, Bohdan S. Kordan

In Canada during the First World War, where aliens of enemy origin were increasingly without work and destitute, internment offered a solution. Interned as prisoners of war (POWs)—a designation that sanctioned voluntary work unrelated to the war—such individuals were sent to frontier labour camps. Their POW designation, however, afforded them certain protections under the laws of war while their status as civilian prisoners suggested they were entitled to even greater consideration than captured combatants. Yet it was precisely their status as civilians that obviated any such consideration. They were not POWs as was conventionally understood. They were interned civilians without …
