Background. This article discusses the level of use of the word "abro" (eyebrow) in the dictionary of ghazals of Amir Khusrav Dehlavi "Tohfat-us-sig'ar" and the range of lexical, semantic, figurative and mystical meanings. Methods. In Persian-Tajik dictionaries and ghazals of the first divan of the poet, the symbols of the term "abro" (eyebrow), a series of epistemological meanings, artistic and lexical interpretation, historical formation and lingopoetic interpretation of lexical interpretations are analyzed as a separate issue. Lack of water supply and sanitation infrastructure in rural areas affects people’s health, welfare and living conditions, negatively impacts the rural environment, and can stall rural development and prosperity. Improving equitable and sustainable access to safe and improved water supply and sanitation in rural areas is therefore an important national development objective. More recently we have been reminded that her life was hard and her choices few, and that she owed no loyalty to the Aztecs, who were her people’s enemy. In 2004, the City of Eureka, California, returned 40 acres of land on Indian Island in Humboldt Bay, the site of a massacre in 1860 that brought the Wiyot to the brink of extinction. Ten years later the City of Eureka initiated the extraordinary action of apologizing to the Wiyot for the massacre that occurred 154 years earlier. The official apology which had been released to the public was transformed into a statement of support after review by the City’s legal counsel. Embodied spiritual inquiry (ESI) is a radical approach to integral and transpersonal education and research offered as a graduate course at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS). Inspired by elements of participatory research and cooperative inquiry, ESI applies interactive embodied meditations to access multiple ways of knowing (e.g., somatic, vital, emotional, mental, contemplative) and mindfully inquire into collaboratively decided questions. Poetic Style And Innovation In Old English, Old Norse, And Old Saxon, Megan E. Hartman

This book traces the development of hypermetric verse in Old English and compares it to the cognate traditions of Old Norse and Old Saxon. The study illustrates the inherent flexibility of the hypermetric line and shows how poets were able to manipulate this flexibility in different contexts for different practical and rhetorical purposes. This analysis shows what degree of control the poets had over the traditional alliterative line, what effects they were able to produce with various stylistic choices, and how attention to poetic style aids literary analysis.

Black Dancers And Musicians Performing Afro-Christian Identity In Early Modern Spain And Portugal, Miguel A. Valerio

PALARA: Publication of the Afro-Latin/American Research Association

This article discusses several early modern Spanish and Portuguese texts that describe Afro-Iberians’ festive and confraternal practices in the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries. While scholars have contended that the early modern Iberian states and church used conversion and confraternities, or lay Catholic brotherhoods, to integrate Afrodescendants to Iberian society, by linking Afro-Iberians’ festive practices to their confraternities, the article contends that these texts underscore how Afrodescendants adapted their African cosmologies and festive customs in the diaspora, rather than totally assimilate to Iberian culture. The article also triangulates Afrodescendants’ festive practices in Europe, Africa, and the Americas, suggesting that Afrodescendants …

Mary M. DeSchmidt Jarboe (1905-2002) was a musician who taught music from the age of 16 until she retired in 1970. During her life, Mary studied with music teachers in Parsons, Pittsburg, and Kansas City. Mary was the organist for the St. Mary’s and St. Patrick’s Catholic Churches and she was a member of the Daughters of Isabella and the National Association of Pastoral Musicians. How can this inherent force facilitate the parallel development of material and subjective production? Can we rely on desire and the subject's loss of the self to the environment as ways to think about freedom and slavery today? Before addressing these questions through Deleuze and Guattari's understanding of desire and returns, I shall introduce a summary of the novel Crónica de músicos y diablos by Gregorio Martínez (1991). The major objective of this paper is to investigate the extent to which the author, Gerardo Fulleda León, problematises the concept of hybridity in his 1989 dramatic work, Plácido. It aims to identify the different ways in which race, class, nationhood, and even gender, all come to figure nineteenth-century Cuba as a hybrid state enduring struggle and contest. It uses Homi K. Bhabha's understanding of hybridity as a "third space" that constantly dialogues and clashes with its constituent selves, alongside Peter Wade's similar reasoning of the term as precisely a process of "struggle and contest". This study defines and analyzes representation of transfats, those who are both transgender and fat, through the examination of two popular media texts, Jabba the Hutt from The Return of the Jedi and Pat from the Saturday Night Live tv program in the 1990’s. I analyze these two texts using a queer feminist media studies lens to reveal the media construction of a transfat representation that is rooted in racism, transnormativity, and fatphobia and that positions the transfat body as non-normative and grotesque through the use of abject horror and fear.
