In a communication from General Jackson addressed to the Hon. John C. Calhoun, Secretary of War, from Fort Gadsden, May 5, 1818, there occurs the following statement: “For a detailed account of my movements from that period to this day, you are respectfully referred to the report prepared by my adjutant general, accompanied with Captain Hugh Young’s topographical sketch of the route and distance performed”. This evidently refers to the memoir and itineraries here presented.

The fluctuating price of cotton in the 1840’s caused the cotton planters of Florida, like their brethren in other parts of the South, to consider ways in which they might stabilize the price of their staple crop in order to stave off economic ruin. 1 Numerous proposals were made to this end, 2 but none met with more widespread response throughout the South than that. of bringing the cotton mill to the cotton field by establishing cotton manufactories throughout the cotton producing regions.

Part I of this paper, which appeared in the last number of the Quarterly, recorded Call’s birth in Russellville, Kentucky; the removal, in his boyhood, to Tallahassee ; his early legal and political activities; his service in. the Confederate States army; his election to the United States Senate in 1865, and the refusal of that body to seat him; his removal to Jacksonville in 1867 or 1868; his defeat for United States senator in 1875; and his successive defeats for presidential elector on the Democratic ticket in 1868, 1872, and 1876. According to Prof. F. H. Hodder, in the introduction to his reprint of Pittman’s work entitled “The Present State of the European Settlements on the Mississippi,” there are but few available biographical data pertaining to Pittman. Hodder there presents such information as he was able to collect. Apparently Pittman must have accompanied the first British detachment occupying Florida, he states that he “resided four years as an engineer in those parts” and it is known that he left towards the close of 1768. In 1562, Jean Ribault, seeking a location in the new world for a colony of Huguenots from France, discovered the St. Johns River. He went ashore on Batten Island at the mouth of the river, where he and his party united in a prayer of thanksgiving for the safe journey across the sea. This seems to have been the first service of the Protestant faith in North America. The following account of the Florida secession convention is taken from the manuscript diary of Edmund Ruffin in the Library of Congress. Ruffin was perhaps the most eminent southern authority on agriculture in the twenty years preceding the Civil War and his experiments in soil fertility, described in his Essays on Calcareous Manures and in the columns of the Farmers’ Register which he edited, brought an agricultural renaissance to his native Virginia. Ruffin early became convinced that the interests of the agricultural South demanded that she cut loose from the Industrial North and form a Southern Confederacy. So ardent were …
