The article analyzes the structure, scripts, and procedural logics behind the violent practices in S-21, the central prison of the Khmer Rouge, as a liminal power regime. The institution’s violent practices and operations served to reveal a “Vietnameseness” and/or otherness within the victims and to prove not only their guilt regarding a singular crime but also a long history of treason and collaboration with the Vietnamese, as well as a moral shortcoming that put them outside their own imagined Khmer moral universe and made them part of a larger scheme. Political scientists have examined the role of gender in genocide but have largely ignored the Holocaust in these analyses. Yet, the Holocaust is the largest genocide in human history and there is much we do not know about how gender affected individual experiences. Nor do we have a very precise understanding of the impact of age in survival, beyond the common wisdom that old and young people usually did not survive. Myanmar has a history of state sanctioned violence against its own people. However, as the regime transition occurs the methods of conducting such violence have also changed. This has not led to an end to violence but an alteration in the methods used by the state. What can be identified is the use of democratic regime transition to legitimise the state’s actions whilst delegitimising the plight of communities that have historically resisted the state. This article critically reanalyses the action, or lack of action, taken by UN peacekeepers in Rwanda and Srebrenica in the 1990's. The lack of action of UN peacekeepers in Rwanda and Bosnia has long been criticised as a conscious decision made by peacekeepers to not act in defence of those being targeted but instead to act as bystanders of genocide when they had the ability to prevent acts of genocide taking place. This paper examines how queerness interacts with and is implicated in traditional genocides, i.e. those directed at racial, religious, national, and ethnic groups - the groups defined as protected classes in the Genocide Convention. It poses the following question: How can scholars of Genocide Studies learn from the queer theory-Genocide Studies nexus? To answer, this paper demonstrate how three distinct queer theory concepts can be woven with Genocide Studies to reveal novel insights into some of the field’s preeminent questions. This article explores how Franco-Cambodian cartoonist Tian’s graphic novel, L’année du lièvre [Year of the Rabbit], represents second-generation postmemory in the form of, what I call, a “Cambodian family album,” or a personal-collective archive. The album serves to convey to subsequent generations: 1) the history of the Cambodian genocide, 2) the collective memories of pre-1975 Cambodia preceding the Khmer Rouge takeover of Phnom Penh, and 3) the Cambodian humanitarian crisis and exodus of the 1970s-1990s. The conceptualization of the family album is derived from the literal translation, from Khmer into English, of the term “photo album” – “book designated for …

Asian Christian spirituality is often viewed through the lens of western theology, which is often grounded in biblical literalism. Within this literalist faith, spirituality becomes a mimicry of dogma. Hence, spiritual experiences are usually only allowed within existing theological perimeters. This article outlines some interpretive and analytical clues that discuss the relationship between African-based religions and sexual and gender classifications in their doctrinal body. It mainly focuses on the performance of ritual manifestations. My election of Kimbanda rituals relies on the manifestations of Pomba Gira. This spiritual entity appears in the archetype of a sensual and powerful woman who, in her earthly life, was a prostitute. During the rituals, she becomes a queen. It concludes that African-based religions involve different ways of being and inhabiting the world, both material and spiritual. That characteristic allows for the bending of gender/sexual norms …

Modern understandings and constructions of sexuality challenge the heteronormative hegemony of most Christian denominations. Pentecostalism faces similar challenges. For LGBTIQ+ Christians, affirmative congregations have been places of refuge to counter destructive doctrines and teachings related to sexuality, marriage, membership, and participation in the church. The taxonomy of Pentecostalism typically includes four movements within Pentecostalism. I postulate a fifth type of Pentecostalism —Affirmative Pentecostal Congregations— which disrupts and dismantles exclusive constructions of sexuality and affirms an inclusive faith.

Traditionally, Roman Catholicism has postulated that Jesus was a man who chose men to follow his mission as priests and that women cannot symbolically represent the masculinity of the messiah. Latin American Liberation Theology took the pattern of women’s work in communities to develop its way of theologizing. Women practiced this type of theology mainly for reasons of political exclusion. Due to this, the article explores the theology of women around the issues of female ordination, taking into account its methods based on participatory principles where people occupy the first place.

This article addresses the interpretations of Biblical texts used against queer believers. Commonly known as «texts of terror,» they have been cited as God-given prohibitions of same-sex relationships. The analysis uncovers the bias and the various representations of gender and sexuality in the Ancient Near East and the Greco-Roman contexts. Drawing from extensive scholarly work featuring contemporary hermeneutics the article challenges the thesis that same-sex relationships are the point of prohibitions. It concludes that the background of Ancient Near East and Greco-Roman worldview do not allow for anachronistic extrapolations of contemporary notions of gender and sexuality into the heart of …

This third issue of the Queer Connection: Latin American and Caribbean Journal of Queer Theologies focuses on advancing both the state of the art of queer theories, theologies, and pastorals, as well as the possibilities of future perspectives. The importance of the "religious" in the contributions of this issue bases on the need to connect with elements that make up everyday life - spirituality, rituals, practices, discourses, among others - that are often "excluded" from the discussions about what is queer in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The relations between Christianity, sexual/gender dissidents, and civil rights of LGBTIQ+ people constitute an essential field of analysis considering Brazilian religious conservatism’s upsurge. The tensions evoked by these political actors within the public space reveal art as a mechanism for sexual /gender dissidents' visibility. Artivism —perceived as political liturgy— subverts precarity. This article investigates the Metropolitan Community Church of Belo Horizonte’s participation in the «III March against LGBTphobia» in Minas Gerais in 2016. The public presence of an affirming Christian community reveals that religious and political artivism reconfigures the public space.

This project explores the history of comparative psychology through close readings of apparatuses used in seminal experiments on animal behavior, drawing connections between seemingly disparate areas of human culture—including art, architecture, mythology, and economics—and the development of the science, with a particular focus on behaviorist and cognitive approaches.
