The World System, Regional Systems, And The Limitations Of Historical Urban Population Datasets, Karl E. Ryavec Jan 2021

The World System, Regional Systems, And The Limitations Of Historical Urban Population Datasets, Karl E. Ryavec

Comparative Civilizations Review

This study presents a method for mapping and comparing the regional extents of historical city-based economies at the global scale by integrating the World-Systems Theory of Immanuel Wallerstein with the Regional Systems Theory of G. W. Skinner. The approach taken here focuses on mapping urban cores and their rural peripheries based on available disaggregated urban population estimates for 1741 cities according to six main historical periods from ca. 3700 BCE to 1900 CE. As a result, a spatial history of some regional-scale changes wrought by increasing modes of capitalism in the Modern and Industrial periods may be compared with earlier …

One Book—Two Authors—Whose Ideas?, Leland Conley Barrows Jan 2021

One Book—Two Authors—Whose Ideas?, Leland Conley Barrows

Comparative Civilizations Review

This short essay attempts to answer some questions that came to my mind regarding the authorship and the origin of ideas developed in De la Sénégambie française (Paris: Librairie de Firmin Didot Frères, Fils et Cie., 1855) by Frédéric Carrère and Paul Holle, two notables of mid-nineteenth century Saint-Louis, Senegal. I had been commissioned to prepare an analysis of the attitudes towards Islam of the authors for Christian-Muslim Relations: A Bibliographical History 1500-1900, a multi-volume series of bibliographical studies under preparation by the Department of Theology and Religion of the University of Birmingham in England being published, volume by …

Narratological Functions Through The Female Lens: The Cases Of The All Souls Trilogy And The Winternight Trilogy, Catalina Millán Scheiding Jan 2021

Narratological Functions Through The Female Lens: The Cases Of The All Souls Trilogy And The Winternight Trilogy, Catalina Millán Scheiding

Faculty Works

This paper offers a comparative analysis of two acclaimed fantasy trilogies by women writers, The All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness and The Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden. By focusing on a qualitative analysis of structural narratological functions through the actions of the main characters (hero / villain), the article argues that the hero displays a personal motivation in both trilogies, which results in a larger impact of their mission. The personal motivation appears to be linked to the protection of family and the underlying construction of a unique perception of affection. This motivation modifies the roles and the impact …

Understanding The Human Condition Through The Depiction Of Protagonists In Crime And Mystery Novels, Kevalin Kaewruean Jan 2021

Understanding The Human Condition Through The Depiction Of Protagonists In Crime And Mystery Novels, Kevalin Kaewruean

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Extant criticism of crime and mystery fiction has indicated how protagonists have freedom of choice in dealing with difficult situations in different forms of risky or challenging settings. In this article, previous criticism is evaluated in terms of its reflection of an essential element of the human condition: the Self’s free will to construct the existential and spatial meanings of its phenomenological existence in relation to the Other. The article further indicates that protagonists tend to disregard their freedom and responsibility for their actions, especially when they make existential choices in traumatic or critical situations. Additionally, the dominance of others …

Gender Identification In Language Other Than Mother-Tongue : A Case Of Non-Thai Listeners Deciphering A Thai Male Speaker’S Gender, Savitri Gadavanij Jan 2021

Gender Identification In Language Other Than Mother-Tongue : A Case Of Non-Thai Listeners Deciphering A Thai Male Speaker’S Gender, Savitri Gadavanij

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This paper explores what factors contribute to distinguishing gay sounding and straight man sounding speech; linguistic cognate or social knowledge and whether the gender of listeners also determines ability in identification. To answer these questions, 286 participants were classified by nationality into 3 groups of participants: Thai listeners as a control group, Zhuang, and Other listeners. They were asked to listen to 12 voice stimuli in Thai from straight and gay men and identify the gender of the speakers. The outcome revealed that the accuracy rate in identifying a speaker’s gender varied among the 3 groups of listeners with Thai …

The Fragmentation Of Religious Authority In Provincial Towns In Indonesia: The Case Of The Mui (Indonesian Muslim Scholar Council) In Pekanbaru And Pontianak, Imron Rosidi, Yasril Yazid, Amril - Jan 2021

The Fragmentation Of Religious Authority In Provincial Towns In Indonesia: The Case Of The Mui (Indonesian Muslim Scholar Council) In Pekanbaru And Pontianak, Imron Rosidi, Yasril Yazid, Amril -

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This article discusses the fragmentation of religious authority in Pekanbaru and Pontianak, Indonesia, focusing on the local mui (Indonesian Muslim Scholar Council). Employing qualitative methods, the mui Pontianak and Pekanbaru experience similar religious authority fragmentation due to the human agency. Members of the mui Pontianak and Pekanbaru represent Islamic organisations in Indonesia’s fight for the religious authority of their Islamic organisations, not for the cohesion of religious authority in the mui. Because religious authority has the desired will, it is no wonder that outside the mui Pontianak and Pekanbaru many Muslim figures struggle to preserve it. Individuals challenge the religious …

Japanese Anime Fandoms In The Uae: An Exploratory Study On Media Accessibility, Habits And Cultural Perceptions, Urwa Mohammed Tariq, Sarah Laura Nesti Willard

CoHSS Faculty Work

The satellite TV revolution in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the early 1990s precipitated the proliferation of foreign media broadcasts. Japanese anime dubbed into Arabic became the most-watched content in Emirati households, a trend that continues to date because the Japanese entertainment and digital media industry offers youngsters easy access to and diverse options for anime. This paper provides an overview and analysis of the growing popularity of anime fandoms in the UAE to ascertain the level of commitment, involvement and the moral perceptions of Emirati fans vis-à-vis Japanese pop culture. A focus group discussion was conducted in a …

The Great Upheaval: Women And Nation In Postwar Nigeria, Judith A. Byfield Jan 2021

The Great Upheaval: Women And Nation In Postwar Nigeria, Judith A. Byfield

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

This social and intellectual history of women’s political activism in postwar Nigeria reveals the importance of gender to the study of nationalism and poses new questions about Nigeria’s colonial past and independent future.

In the years following World War II, the women of Abeokuta, Nigeria, staged a successful tax revolt that led to the formation first of the Abeokuta Women’s Union and then of Nigeria’s first national women’s organization, the Nigerian Women’s Union, in 1949. These organizations became central to a new political vision, a way for women across Nigeria to define their interests, desires, and needs while fulfilling the …

A Field Guide To The Poetry Of Theodore Roethke, William Barillas Jan 2021

A Field Guide To The Poetry Of Theodore Roethke, William Barillas

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

A constellation of essays that reanimates the work of this pivotal twentieth-century American poet for a new century.

This volume is the first to reconsider Roethke’s work in terms of the expanded critical approaches to literature that have emerged since his death in 1963. Editor William Barillas and over forty contributors, including highly respected literary scholars, critics, and writers such as Peter Balakian, Camille Paglia, Jay Parini, and David Wojahn, collectively make a case for Roethke’s poetry as a complete, unified, and evolving body of work. The accessible essays employ a number of approaches, including formalism, ecocriticism, reader-response, and feminist …

Expatriate Middle Eastern Muslim Mothers’ Stories About Sex Education In U.S. Schools: Communication Privacy Challenges And Narrative Typologies, Nada Alfeir Jan 2021

Expatriate Middle Eastern Muslim Mothers’ Stories About Sex Education In U.S. Schools: Communication Privacy Challenges And Narrative Typologies, Nada Alfeir

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

This study examines the stories of expatriate Middle Eastern Muslim (EMEM) mothers in the U.S. about how they talked with their children about the sexual education classes offered in U.S. public schools. Three concepts from the Communication Privacy Management theory (CPM; Petronio, 2002) were adapted to an interpretive narrative perspective drawn on Frank's (2013) typology of narrative types. A total of 15 EMEM mothers who had lived for more than one year in the U.S. were recruited in the study. Qualitative data were collected through written stories and interviews, and supplemented by the author's observations. All written stories and interviews …

The Power Of The Panel: How American Comic Book Media Utilizes The Panel To Alter Audience Interaction, Austin Biese Jan 2021

The Power Of The Panel: How American Comic Book Media Utilizes The Panel To Alter Audience Interaction, Austin Biese

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

This thesis traces the evolution of the panel across decades as well as various mediums. In one form, the panel becomes stretched when characters break the fourth wall to immerse readers in a new perspective on how the panel functions and creates meaning. In another form, comic book film adaptations comic imagery to instill a sense of nostalgia and to wink and nod at the audience, stretching the conventions of what the panel can be to impact the devoted audience. Lastly, in modern comic-reading apps, a ‘Smart Reading’ function remediates panels to provide an easier and unified path to read …

Black Grocers, Black Activism, And The Spaces In Between: Black Grocery Stores During The Mississippi Freedom Struggle Movement, Keon Ahmad Burns Jan 2021

Black Grocers, Black Activism, And The Spaces In Between: Black Grocery Stores During The Mississippi Freedom Struggle Movement, Keon Ahmad Burns

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the role of Black-owned grocery stores and their owners during the Mississippi Freedom Struggle Movement. The thesis highlights four Black grocery store owners, and the impact they had on the movement. Grocery stores played a vital role and were often sites of contestants. Black-owned grocery stores served as meeting spaces for Black activism, targets of White domestic terrorism, and safe havens for Black Mississippians. These spaces provided a space for political agency, leisure, and safety. Likewise, this thesis centers Black grocery store owners as fundamental to the progress of the movement. It explores an array of ways …

A Natural Fit For The Natural State: The Emergence Of Black Power Organizations In Arkansas From 1968-1975, Maurice D. Gipson Jan 2021

A Natural Fit For The Natural State: The Emergence Of Black Power Organizations In Arkansas From 1968-1975, Maurice D. Gipson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study seeks to explore how Black Arkansans on college campuses in rural towns navigated their local circumstances while embracing tenets of Black Power. By 1968, public PWIs in Arkansas were contending with an influx of Black students due to the gains of the Civil Rights Movement. Even though many of the universities had been integrated years and even decades earlier, they were still ill-equipped for the number of Black students that would enroll and descend upon the towns during this period.

Imagining An Asian American Superhero Of North Korean Origin: A Design Fiction, Seo-Young J. Chu Jan 2021

Imagining An Asian American Superhero Of North Korean Origin: A Design Fiction, Seo-Young J. Chu

Publications and Research

My talk, a thought-experimental blend of literary criticism and speculative "design fiction," will introduce you to an Asian American superhero of North Korean origin. In this science-fictional superhero, whom I have tentatively named "구름"/"☁️"/"Ku-reum," Korea's elusive realities coalesce into legible form. More specifically, they become available for narrative experience and relatable to us as an anthropomorphic character, a person with whom we might identify, come face-to-face, sympathize, interact dynamically, and have a conversation. Ku-reum is designed to reflect Korea's complex past and hopes for the future. Existing beyond division systems, Ku-reum uses the non-binary pronouns "one"/"they." Neither "South" nor "North," …

Hoi To Kwan Jan 2021

Hoi To Kwan

Dissertations from all years

Junting Jin Jan 2021

Junting Jin

Dissertations from all years

Understanding Sexual Abuse And Redemption Of Persons With Sexual Abuse History Through The Person And Work Of Jesus Christ, Nag Chi Wong Jan 2021

Understanding Sexual Abuse And Redemption Of Persons With Sexual Abuse History Through The Person And Work Of Jesus Christ, Nag Chi Wong

Seattle Pacific Seminary Theses

“Where can sexual abuse survivors find hope in God?” In order to seek an answer to this question, I turned to the person and work of Christ. My hope and belief are that through looking at the person and work of Jesus, where fullness of God was pleased to dwell, we might be able to find the message that God is speaking to God’s hurting children. What is God telling us about Godself, about sexual abuse survivors, and about all God’s people through Jesus’ incarnation, ministry, crucifixion, and resurrection, as well as through the eternal Lamb? Much has been written …
