This thesis examines the process of witnessing in Cynthia Ozick’s novella Rosa as a crucial part of living in the aftermath of Holocaust. By using Kelly Oliver’s concept of witnessing, I approach the process of witnessing trauma as the process of restoring subjectivity. As my analysis of Ozick’s Rosa shows, what prevents both Rosa and those around her to bear witness to trauma is the failure to imagine oneself as implicated in the traumas of the other. Songs like “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” “Lift every Voice and Sing,” and “We Shall Overcome” are linked to key events that inspired hope and change. Collectively, these songs are known as protest music. Protest music can act as a type of social commentary, expressing a wide range of emotions, and have a uniting element, calling leaders and groups to action for tangible results. This research study sought to examine the impact of the transition to telehealth music therapy services as the primary delivery mode of treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic. Board-certified music therapists were invited to participate in an online questionnaire-based survey where they were asked to provide responses to questions relating to their and their clients’ demographics, their theoretical orientation, their clinical experience prior to and during COVID- 19, and their views on the overall impact of telehealth. Little to no research has been done on music therapy and racial, ethnic, and musical representation. The present study investigated the perceptions racially and ethnically diverse music therapy students/new professionals have of cultural and musical representation in music therapy education, and whether opportunities, exist for ethnically/culturally diverse students to include their music when it is not directly implemented in the music therapy curricula. Thirteen participants were surveyed and results showed that there are gaps in music therapy education when it comes to racial, ethnic, and musical representation outside of Western traditions. This study explored the music therapist’s lived experience of flow during a worldwide pandemic, within an improvisational music therapy approach. There is little to no literature about the concept of flow and how it relates to the music therapist’s lived experience, and none of which includes a worldwide traumatic event. Through a phenomenological investigation, the lived experiences of two music therapists who align with the improvisational music therapy approach were studied. A thematic analysis was conducted on data sources such as qualitative interview transcriptions and audio/video recordings of the interview. This phenomenological study aimed to analyze the experiences of Nordoff-Robbins level one trainees in the United States amid significant platform shifts as a result of the global COVID-19 pandemic. Data collection consisted of semi-structured virtual interviews that primarily focused on the experiences of trainees as students/supervisees and as providers of music-centered music therapy services. Emergent themes included (1) Shared Musical Space When Not Physically Together, (2) The Impact of Virtual Platforms on the Experience of Musical Aesthetic, (3) The Nordoff-Robbins Trainee’s Relationship with the Musical Self, and (4) Growth Resulting from Unforeseen Change. This collection consists of catalogs, correspondence, clippings, administrative papers, and published materials that were either produced by Slingerland Drum Co. or were participated in by the Slingerland Drum Company from the late 1920s through 2003. The bulk of the materials are from the period of time immediately following the Slingerland family selling the company in 1970 until it was bought by Fred Gretsch in the late 1980s.

Schelling presents the 1809 freedom essay as the idealistic flowering of a vision of system he always held. He is not disingenuous but somewhat perplexing in claiming that the system always was complete in nuce, even though not expounded completely. Tilliette captured the ambiguity nicely in designating Schelling’s oeuvre «une philosophie en devenir». This mid-career essay must be read backwards to the earliest essays republished with it—especially to their views of willing, freedom, and moral responsibility—and simultaneously forward to the late philosophy’s analysis of God’s freedom as freedom from being, even necessary being. During the Covid pandemic, my young children discovered "The Jetsons," thanks to a meme suggesting that the futuristic TV cartoon from the 1960s was "more accurate than expected" (see online yoga, virtual doctor visits, etc.). Television is an intrinsically passive medium, which means it can never generate what psychologists deem an "optimal experience"-the state of enjoyment that emerges when an activity perfectly balances our skills with the challenges of the task at hand. From a Jewish text, known to us as 2 Enoch,we learn interesting details about Adam’s creation. Both recensions of 2 Enoch 44 tell us “the Lord with his own two hands created humankind; in a likeness of his own face (в подобии лица своего), both small and great, the Lord created [them].” It is intriguing that 2 Enoch departs here from the traditional reading attested in Genesis 1:26–27, where Adam was created, not in a likeness of God’s face, but after His image (tselem).  In view of this departure, the author of one of the English translations …

Hemingway represents both Spain and Cuba in very different lights, despite the similarities inherent in the countries. As a colonial holding of Spain until 1898, and a U.S. holding until 1902, Cuba is an off shoot of Spanish culture, with differences based on the indigenous people conquered in the 1500s. Though unsurprising, it is interesting that both nations drew Hemingway’s attention. For Hemingway, Spain represented this noble beauty, this majestic heaven on earth, even while in the midst of war. When he writes about Spain, Hemingway waxes romantic. However, this attitude isn’t reflected in his writings about Cuba, which focus …

Ricardo Palma (1833-1919) was a literary figure in Peru as well as a leader in culture and politics. He played a role in the War of the Pacific (1879-1883), in the rebuilding of the National Library of Peru destroyed in that war, and in the founding of the Peruvian Academy of Language. His principal work, the Tradiciones Peruanas, was read widely throughout Iberian America and influenced writing styles. In Chapter I, I critique the loss of identity attached to incarceration, and introduce the foundation for Black bodies individuals being discriminated against in the prosecution system. When, on August 13, 2020, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced it was normalizing relations with the state of Israel, few could have predicted the effects it would have. However, since the Emirati decision, three other Arab countries - Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco - have reached agreements with Tel Aviv to normalize relations. Such events are a sharp divergence from the status quo and thus, this thesis examines, through the application of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and analyzed through a constructivist framework, how three Arab media sources - Al-Jazeera, Al-Arabiya, and Al-Mayadeen - discuss and represent these normalization agreements. In Koreatown, Los Angeles, one of the largest centers of Korean immigrants in the Western hemisphere, restaurant owners are constantly creating new forms of Korean cuisine that both challenge and preserve traditional methods of Korean culinary methods. Based on participant observation and semi-structured interviews conducted in Koreatown, Los Angeles in December 2020, I examine how Korean restaurant owners are navigating the current food scene while also maintaining their ethnic identity in a globalized landscape such as Los Angeles. This thesis utilizes theorists in disability studies to expose the lack of meaningful discourse regarding the disabled experience.
