This study employed narrative inquiry and critical race approaches to explore Black youth's perceptions and experiences of Canadian public library programs and materials. In response to calls in Canada's Anti-Racism Strategy (2024) and Ontario's Anti-Black Racism Strategy (2025) for social service institutions to address anti-Black racism, the research examined Black youth experiences in public libraries and how these experiences relate to anti-Black racism in education and social service settings. Ballet dancers commonly experience posterior ankle impingement (PAI), and while there is research regarding the biomechanical risk factors for PAI in ballet dancers, and mitigation and rehabilitation strategies for this type of injury, there is little research conducted surrounding further barriers posed by international travel. This study investigated the implications of international travel on the risk mitigation and rehabilitation of posterior ankle impingement in ballet dancers, exploring barriers posed by international travel to regular strength and conditioning and lifestyle practices. This study interrogates the impact that digital technologies and digital mediation have on creative learning workshops run by arts organisations and delivered by teaching artists. It responds to a wave of new creative learning initiatives supported by arts organisations, state governments, and schools following the COVID-19 pandemic. Situating the research primarily in the investigation of Puppet Lab, a new digital workshop developed by Spare Parts Puppet Theatre in Walyalup (Fremantle), qualitative data was collected over a series of 5 semi-structured interviews with Western Australian teaching artists. This dissertation explores the teleological ties between victim diasporas and successful art market participation through an examination of the Jewish diaspora at its dominance within the art world’s expansion in the 19th Century and the Armenian diaspora at present. It argues that diasporic conditions, particularly those shaped by historical trauma, foster heightened capacity for cultural assimilation and risk taking, identifying and committing to market gaps. This dissertation investigates the complex dimensions of gendered valuation through a comparative study of Amedeo Modigliani, Suzanne Valadon, and Paula Modersohn-Becker. Leading figures in the modernist reimagining of the nude in the early twentieth century, with shared ties to the Parisian milieu, their markets have since followed markedly different trajectories. Combining market and historiographical analysis with feminist theory, this study considers the structural, ideological, and discursive mechanisms that underpin these asymmetries and continue to inform the artists’ reception and valuation today.

This dissertation examines how the relationship between the size and price of paintings has evolved throughout the 21st century by analysing an up-to-date dataset of 18,821 works by 103 artists offered at auction between 2000-2025 within 3 distinct segments of the market (Blue-Chip, Contemporary and Ultra-Contemporary). The main finding is that the size elasticity differs in each of these segments. It is highest for the Blue-Chip segment (0.71), lower for the Contemporary segment (0.59) and lowest for the Ultra-Contemporary segment (0.55). Contrary to many previous results, it finds no optimal size within the range of works offered at auction. As …

This dissertation explores the development of contemporary Kazakhstani art after 1991, arguing that the independent nation’s international cultural visibility is defined by artists rather than institutions. Operating without state infrastructure, Said Atabekov, the Kyzyl Tractor collective, Almagul Menlibayeva, Saule Suleimenova, and Yerbossyn Meldibekov gained international recognition via biennales, exhibitions, and transnational networks. Their practices challenge state narratives of heroic nationalism and Western expectations. Case studies, interviews, and analysis of Rukhani Zhangyru and new institutions like Tselinny, enable this dissertation to argue that Kazakhstan’s position in global art history is artist driven.

This dissertation examines censorship of art in an Indian context, focusing on artistic production, exhibition practices, and the commercial viability of dissenting art. Drawing on case studies from institutional controversies, legal judgments, and interviews with practitioners, the study analyses how censorship operates not only through law but also through institutional gatekeeping and market mechanisms. This thesis examines the representation of female imagery in Renaissance Italy (c.1500–1620) and Ming China (c.1480–1644), asking why two contemporaneous cultures diverged so sharply in their visual constructions of femininity. In Italy, artists such as Titian, Moroni, and Lavinia Fontana depicted women as embodiments of dynastic virtue, sensuality, and intellectual agency. In contrast, Ming female images—ranging from ancestor portraits and court beauties to works by Tang Yin, Qiu Ying, Cui Zizhong, and Ma Shouzhen—were framed by Confucian morality and literati aesthetics, privileging symbolic virtue over individuality.

This dissertation examines Nicolas Poussin’s interpretation of Ovid’s Metamorphoses through two of his depictions of Apollo and Daphne (1625 and 1663). It explores how Poussin reinterprets the myth beyond its literary source, transforming it into a meditation on love, reason, and artistic invention. Combining visual analysis, textual comparison, and a contextual study, this dissertation situates Poussin within the intellectual milieu of seventeenth-century Rome and the broader humanist tradition reflected in his art. This research aims to broaden the understanding and appreciation of the pottery, as well as establish the significance of innovation and experimentation in early English porcelain designs. Critically ill adults receiving respiratory support in intensive care units (ICUs) frequently experience psychoemotional disturbances such as agitation, anxiety, and delirium, which contribute to prolonged ventilation, increased sedative use, and adverse patient outcomes. While pharmacologic management remains standard practice, associated risks including oversedation and delirium highlight the need for safe, complementary interventions. Similarly, modern perception of a scribe tends to be a single, solitary person slaving away at the entire manuscript. This installation is a process-based paper artwork that seeks to protect, enlighten, and discover what healing can be in silence. Through the creation of immersive art objects and experiences, I seek understanding and resolutions for my lived experiences. I utilize the physicality of paper in conjunction with the fragility of topic to enhance the meaning behind my material choices. I transform the idea of a traumatic room into an activated space of healing: one that rest, time, and momentary silence exist as choice rather than by force.

This set of 12 Preludes for solo piano draws inspiration from Chopin’s set of 24 Preludes for the same instrument, along with ideas from other composers and various genres to create a varied set in which each piece is centered around a note of the 12-note chromatic scale. The movements are titled based on the material that inspired them, the effect they create, or the special technique or limitation they used. A brief overview of inspirational material will be discussed, then each movement will be described through the lens of their compositional processes.
