The organ solo works from Liège before 1750 are neglected today, but such works are fascinating from a historical performances perspective, especially given their fusion of Dutch, French, and Italian styles. This thesis uncovers historical evidence that supports performance practice decisions in these works. Four collections of Liégeois organ solo pieces are analyzed, including the Liber Fratrum Cruciferorum Leodiensium by Gerardus Scronx (1617), the Pièces d’orgue by Lambert Chaumont (1695), the Livre d’orgue by Thomas Babou (1710), and the Pièces de clavesin (harpsichord and organ pieces) by Hubert Renotte (1749).

The Covid-19 pandemic has been a game-changer for academic research because it has affected all of its aspects, starting from the “where,” which influences the “what” and the “how.” Given these changes, I would like to suggest a few possibilities for updating the “where,” the “what,” and the “how” of research on the Asia Pacific region. I will illustrate these possibilities with some of my own strategies developed or reinforced during the pandemic, as a historian of the art and culture of early modern Japan. Three dimensions of the changes guide my suggestions: the digital, the local and the mundane.

This dissertation examines the use of fairy-tale allusions to explore masculinity in four novels published during the Cold War period. This notable focus on men and masculinity held in common across these four novels from four different decades is interesting because it suggests that the shift in focus to women and feminist ideals in fairy-tale revisions of the 1970s and after is even more stark a shift than has yet been recognized by scholars. วิทยานิพนธ์เรื่อง กลวิธีและลีลาการขับร้องเพลงกระบวนทัพในละครพันทางเรื่องราชาธิราชของครูสมชาย ทับพร มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษามูลบทที่เกี่ยวข้องพร้อมทั้งกลวิธีและลีลาในการขับร้องเพลงกระบวนทัพในละครพันทางเรื่องราชาธิราช โดยใช้วิธีการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ ในการสัมภาษณ์ข้อมูลจาก ครูสมชาย ทับพร รวมทั้งบุคคลอื่นที่เกี่ยวข้อง แล้วนำข้อมูลที่ได้มาเรียบเรียงในรูปแบบการพรรณาวิเคราะห์ ผู้วิจัยเลือกศึกษาเพลงขับร้องช่วงกระบวนทัพ 3 ตอน จำนวน 42 เพลง ซึ่งผลการศึกษาสามารถสรุปได้ดังนี้ ละครพันทางสามารถจำแนกได้เป็น 3 ยุค ได้แก่ 1. ละครพันทางยุคเจ้าพระยามหินทรศักดิ์ธำรง (เพ็ง เพ็ญกุล) 2. ละครพันทางยุคพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ กรมพระนราธิปประพันธ์พงศ์ 3. ละครพันทางยุคกรมศิลปากร จากการศึกษาการขับร้องพบว่า ครูสมชาย ทับพร ให้ความสำคัญในการตีความทางด้านอารมณ์ของการขับร้องให้มีความสอดคล้องกับอารมณ์ของตัวละคร ผ่านการใช้กลวิธีพิเศษในการขับร้อง 9 กลวิธี โดยจำแนกออกเป็น 2 กลุ่ม ได้แก่ 1. กลุ่มกลวิธีพิเศษเพื่อตกแต่งคำร้อง ได้แก่ การลักจังหวะ การปั้นคำ การม้วนเสียง-ม้วนคำ การผันเสียง และการเน้นเสียง-เน้นคำ 2. กลุ่มกลวิธีพิเศษเพื่อตกแต่งทำนองเอื้อน ได้แก่ การกระทบเสียง การสะบัดเสียง การโปรยเสียง และการโหนเสียง โดยกลวิธีพิเศษที่พบบ่อยที่สุด ได้แก่ การลักจังหวะ การสะบัดเสียง และการม้วนเสียง-ม้วนคำ กลวิธีพิเศษที่สร้างความโดดเด่นในการขับร้อง ได้แก่ การโปรยเสียง การโหนเสียง และการเน้นเสียง-เน้นคำ ในส่วนของลีลาการขับร้อง สามารถจำแนกออกได้เป็นเป็น 3 ประเด็น คือ 1. ลีลาการขับร้องในบทละครช่วงที่แสดงอารมณ์ของตัวละคร ประกอบด้วยลีลาการ ขับร้องที่สอดคล้องกับการใช้กลวิธี และลีลาการขับร้องที่เกิดจากอัตลักษณ์เฉพาะตัวของครูสมชาย ทับพร 2. ลีลาการขับร้องที่เกิดจากการแบ่งผู้ขับร้องตามบทละคร มี 3 ลักษณะ ได้แก่ การขับร้องเดี่ยว การขับร้องหมู่ และการขับร้องต้นบท-ลูกคู่ 3. ลีลาการขับร้องที่เกิดจากความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างการรับร้อง ส่งร้อง

John Cleland’s Memoir of a Woman of Pleasure (1748–49), commonly known as Fanny Hill, is regarded as the first pornographic novel in English literature. Its description of sexual activities is explicit but its language is not coarse. It employs a wide range of metaphors to refer to both sexual acts and genitalia and the metaphor used most frequently to refer to the penis is “the machine.” The machine metaphor will be the focus of this paper, which aims to argue that the machine metaphor carries two meanings. The rescue mission at Tham Luang cave in Chiang Rai, Thailand, presents a scenario in which magical rituals and technical knowledge were marshaled against hostile natural conditions. While practical endeavors were made to mitigate the risks and impediments posed by malign weather and topographical features of the cave, myths and rituals were enacted to control unruly factors not subject to human manipulation. Venus, a play written by Suzan-Lori Parks, employs unconventional theatrical approaches in retelling the history of a 19th-century freak show attraction. This study examines how the critique of gender bias and sexual manipulations in Venus is explored and projected in ways that can be described as postmodern. Agency, Responsibility, And Actor Positioning In Courtroom Narratives, Krisda Chaemsaithong

Viewing language as a system consisting of grammatical resources for meaning making, this study explores how agency and responsibility are attributed in legal narratives through the lens of transitivity. Drawing upon the opening address of three American trials, the quantitative and qualitative findings indicate that agency and blameworthiness of the individuals on trial are discursively negotiated through starkly different grammatical choices, so that polarized positionings of the same social actors and events are accomplished for the audience. It is argued that such manipulation of grammatical resources exhibits subjective intervention on the part of the presenter and constitutes a prime mechanism …

Aurelio Tolentino (1869–1915) is best remembered as the first nationalist dramatist who was in and out of prison because of his mutinous writings. His five extant novels manifest the sociopolitical struggle of early 20th-century Filipinos from the worldview of a versatile author. Tolentino’s fiction from 1909 to 1914 unveils how the colonized adapted ingrained, rigid, and conventional Spanish influences to the liberal and materialistic scheme imposed by the United States. A sociohistorical approach was used to investigate Tolentino’s narratives, revealing a people with a pliant but firm character brought about by their four centuries of subjugation. At the dawn of the 1990s, Thailand began to accept migrant workers from neighboring countries, namely Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia to work in labor sectors to meet with the high demand for manpower due to rapid economic development. Thirty years since the early batches of migrant workers entered the country, the number of migrant workers steadily increased and reached 3.9 million in 2018. Among this number, approximately 390,015 were children. Around thirty-five percent of these children were enrolled in Thai government schools. This study explores Thai bilingual speakers’ code-switching in a formal work setting. Although code-switching may appear to be random, there is an underlying choice which speakers decide upon when switching between languages: Language proficiency, the initial speaker’s language choice, the setting, and role relationships all contribute to these choices. This study investigates the factors contributing to code-switch decisions by participants within their specific work environment. The main findings show that adopting one language over the other depends on two main factors: first, the initial sequence of the interaction; second, the role relationship that the participants wish to maintain. This paper aims to explore the relationship of mindfulness and motivation in self-transformation based on the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh. It discusses mind and meditation, the application and impact of mindfulness on body and mind, the Buddhist’s roots of motivation in meditation, the dynamics of motivation in mindfulness practice and Thich Nhat Hanh’s teachings on interbeing. He argues that it is not necessary to hold the original Buddhist intention with the goal to attain enlightenment when practicing mindfulness because mindfulness is not only a means but also an end in itself. My project demonstrates how the Saudi Arabian government established their control over a dissident Eastern Province. Examining a mixture of ARAMCO, American, and Saudi sources, my thesis aims to expand the historiography of urban history, Saudi Arabia, and company towns in the twentieth century. Through the lens of company towns, urban development, and military modernization, I show how Saudi Arabia was effectively able to disrupt local power structures and replace them with their own. This article examines the evolving instructional practice of one Chinese dual language instructor in the US as she employs a translanguaging-inspired approach in her math and science Mandarin medium classes. Contrary to the school language allocation policy requiring 90% Mandarin in her Chinese classes, she encourages the utilization of English as well as Mandarin in her instruction. This offers comprehensible input to learners, also making possible greater student participation. The nature objects and how beings interact with them has long been a debate in the philosophic tradition. One aspect of this I have taken a look at is the aesthetic qualities entailed in this with particular attention paid to repair. In particular I explore the blurring of the subject-object distinction and the role of narrative in human engagement. I based my research and arguments primarily from Buddhist and Japanese Zen theories and ideas. Special attention was paid to the philosopher Kitaro Nishida and the Kyoto School philosophy tradition and ideas from Mahayana Buddhism.

Queer Subculture In The Conservative South: A Study Of Drag Performers In Mississippi, Christina Alison Huff

The amount of research on Mississippi LGBTQ communities is scarce. It is well established that ethnographic research on rural Southern queer communities is lacking, and that most LGBTQ research is conducted in metropolitan areas in the northern and western areas of the United States. This study investigates the lives of Mississippi drag performers through films, photographs, and audio documentaries. Specifically, these primary sources demonstrate that many LGBTQ members are thriving in historically conservative rural Southern areas by carving out spaces for their own existence.
