Change And Continuity In Biology, Gunnar O'Neill Babcock

This dissertation considers various examples of change and continuity in biology. In particular, it focuses on the conceptual possibilities during the fission of microorganisms and genes when they multiply or replicate. Among the kinds of conceptual revision that are outlined in the first two chapters, the three chapter argues that certain concepts such as death, reproduction and organism have limited applicability in certain domains of biology. The fourth chapter investigates whether synthetic genomes should be considered parts of genetic lineages. It concludes that synthetic genomes are parts of the lineages upon which they were modeled. La noción de virtualidad está influenciada por la teoría de la crítica cultural y literaria Katherine Hayles que argumenta que la virtualidad es la percepción cultural de que los objetos materiales están interpenetrados por patrones de información. Changes in social organization can be studied through several different avenues one ofwhich is through mortuary patterns. Here we will be looking at changes in social organization during the Late Bronze Age and Iron Age in Northern Europe using mortuary and osteological data. If we study how each community interacts, mourns, stores, transports, and buries their dead then we can learn about the underlying mechanisms that transform and maintain a society, and gain insight into the societal and economical shifts of the Late Bronze Age and Iron Age in this region. Antebellum Black Climate Science: The Medical Geography And Emancipatory Politics Of James Mccune Smith And Martin Delany, Colin Fisher

This article argues that two prominent antebellum Black physicians—James McCune Smith and Martin Delany—developed competing scientific theories of nature’s impact on the human body in response to the climatic theories of the American Colonization Society, polygenist race scientists, and southern defenders of slavery. It further argues that the physicians’ divergent conclusions regarding nature’s agency played a significant role in underwriting arguably the most important and consequential political debate in antebellum Black America—namely, the dispute between integrationists who advocated remaining in the United States and fighting for equality and emigrationists who argued that America was so hopelessly racist that African Americans …

In today’s world, people access knowledge instantaneously on Internet-connected devices such as laptops, smartphones, and smart televisions. We can ask Siri and Alexa any question imaginable while driving or cooking a meal. The source for this readily accessible information is a changing array of digital, tertiary knowledge-sharing platforms. The day-to-day decisions we make, along with our opinions and views of the world, are shaped by the knowledge we glean from these sources. What Happened In Harris Neck?: Racism, Resistance, And Futures, Anna Sharpe

This project traces the history and legacy of the seizure of Harris Neck, approximately 2,600 acres on the Georgia coast, once largely composed of rice and cotton plantations. After the Civil War, freedmen and women transformed the area into a thriving Black community. The community of approximately a hundred families, a school, a church, a post office, and many small farms and businesses flourished from the late 1800’s until 1942, when the federal government seized Harris Neck for use as an Army airfield.

Monstrous And Beautiful: Jungian Archetypes In Wilde’S Salomé, Nayana Rajnish

The subject of my research is the 1891 play Salomé, by Oscar Wilde and my thesis addresses the modern psychological implications of the cultural truths revealed by Wilde's re-vision of the myth of that biblical femme fatale. I argue that in fashioning a tragic heroine out of a female monster figure of “Immortal Vice”, Oscar Wilde created a document that captures two contradictory narratives: one in which Salomé plays the heroine of a tragedy and another in which she performs the role and functions of a villain. 余華，浙江嘉興海鹽縣人氏，現居北京。中國先鋒文學作家，在文革成長。原為牙醫，80年代始寫作小說，1987年發表《十八歲出門遠行》成名。初期以寫作中短篇為主，後轉寫長篇，近年多出版隨筆、雜文集。其作品多以文革為背景，擅以暴力描寫、反諷等手法從人的角度探討隱藏在歷史中的倫理、價值觀等問題。就《兄弟》而言，大多學者只留意作品的先鋒性、題材處理、寫作風格或進行翻譯、比較等研究，縱亦有少量關涉主要人物（宋鋼、李光頭）的論著，但多側重於李光頭，缺乏較平衡的討論，也欠缺以新的角度切入論述。

本文將以余華長篇小說《兄弟》（上、下）為研究對象，以飲食角度切入論述。第一章為緒論，分別說明本文之寫作緣起、學者對《兄弟》的研究概況及本文採用之研究方法；第二章以小說中的食物、食器、餐飲場所為例，探討它們如何體現「兄弟」的價值觀、權力、性別、貧富與鄉鎮等方面的二元對立；第三章承接上章從文本內部的飲食視角對「兄弟」進行的分析，擴大至飲食與社會的討論：先從現當代文學史——「吃」的文學的範疇爬梳類近《兄弟》以飲食為線索的作品，後闡釋《兄弟》在中國當代社會的衍生意義。第四章為結論，整合全文中心要點。

The focus of this research was to identify what attributes of patient room designs are most beneficial to health care professionals and to explore whether particular professionals hold certain beliefs about patient room attributes. Acute care, progressive care, and intensive care patient room designs were analyzed through the use of pre- and postoccupancy evaluations of a cardiovascular service line. Fourteen focus groups and 1 interview among 74 health care professionals were conducted. Qualitative analysis of the data was guided by a multidimensional framework. A descriptive quantitative assessment was additionally made to reveal positive, negative, or neutral trends and determine the …

Industrial Heritage Museums and Organizations (IHMOs) in the United States (US) and their volunteers are underrepresented in the literature on volunteerism. The motivation and demographics of volunteers in IHMOs within the US are examined in this paper. Research into this topic is exploratory and little is known, therefore any hypothesis was based on personal observations as an AmeriCorps VISTA member in a variety of US museums. An online survey was sent out to three hundred and eighty-five museums across the US, along with conducting twelve in-person or over-the-phone interviews with museum practitioners and volunteers.
