When Misclassification Is Misgendering: Gender Prediction In The Context Of Trans Identities, Sean Miller
When Misclassification Is Misgendering: Gender Prediction In The Context Of Trans Identities, Sean Miller
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
As a subdomain of author profiling, gender prediction (sometimes called gender inference) has received a substantial amount of attention—both as a task in itself, and for other downstream analyses. Throughout the existing literature various statistical and machine learning methods have been applied to extract features in order to either characterize and differentiate female and male writing styles, or simply to achieve maximum accuracy on gender prediction as a binary classification task. However, researchers often do not disclose how they conceptualize gender nor do they consider the implications that gender prediction has for non-binary and trans individuals. Along with an overview …
Framing The Border: Liminality In The Network Narratives Of Alejandro González Iñárritu, Muhammad Muzammal
Framing The Border: Liminality In The Network Narratives Of Alejandro González Iñárritu, Muhammad Muzammal
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis explores liminality conveyed as displacement before death in the network narrative films of Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu. Due to their depiction of existential crises and possibly fatal scenarios of several characters in different countries and regions, these network narrative films are colloquially referred to as the “Death Trilogy.” Therefore, rearranging the many strands of death-related abstractions and notions in these films around liminality becomes a jumping-off point to explore deeper layers of these works. Through interdisciplinary yet markedly film studies excavations, this thesis projects the liminal spaces of Iñárritu’s films onto border spaces. With borders considered as sites of …
Extracting Theory From Practice: A Computational Analysis Of The Persian Radif, Sepideh Shafiei
Extracting Theory From Practice: A Computational Analysis Of The Persian Radif, Sepideh Shafiei
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation studies radif, the repertoire/system of Persian classical music, by developing a framework for computational research on vocal music performance. The radif consists of seven dastgāhs and five āvāzes (secondary dastgāhs). Each dastgāh consists of several pieces (gushes). Throughout this research, I draw on three areas of knowledge to study each subject: the historical aspects, the current theories, and the practice. When possible, I attempt to bridge the gap between theory and practice by extracting the relevant information from practice. To this end, I use and modify existing computational methods for analyzing audio and symbolic data. The main subjects …
Auto®Ficción Latinx De Nueva York (1999–2020), Jacqueline Herranz Brooks
Auto®Ficción Latinx De Nueva York (1999–2020), Jacqueline Herranz Brooks
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This research on the intersection of Literary Criticism, Latino Studies, Persona Studies, and Performance Studies has led me to question the accepted definitions of autoficción (Doubrovsky, Gasparini, Alberca, Casas, Schlikers) and expand that definition into a more multifaceted and operational term. Hence, I created auto®ficción, a new term describing the hybrid creations of a group of underrepresented contemporary Latinx authors living/producing/circulating their work in New York City, during the first two decades of the 21st Century. For these authors, their life experiences and quotidian uses of this city’s spaces are the subjects of their work. Auto®ficción draws attention …
Child-Ish Books: Presenting Zines And Artist Books For Kids, Hannah Coleman
Child-Ish Books: Presenting Zines And Artist Books For Kids, Hannah Coleman
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This Capstone seeks: to provide a review of the field of children’s literature, with a specific focus on the ways that the mainstream publishing industries are driven by market forces, embed messages of Aetonormativity, Maria Nikolajeva’s (2009) term to describe the belief that adult experiences are normative and superior to the inferior and deviant experiences of children, and participate in the hegemonic control of children through socialization; to share my personal journey away from mass marketed picture books and towards independent publishing entities and New York City’s zine community; to provide a history of indie publishing and zine counterculture, including …

Legacies Of Segregation And Disenfranchisement: The Road From Plessy To Frank And Voter Id Laws In The United States, Paru Shah, Robert S. Smith
History Faculty Research and Publications
This article explores how voter ID laws further the dismantling of voting rights and the promises of full political engagement for racial minorities, especially African Americans. The authors highlight the racial politics that inform the emergence of these laws, and the racial intent and impact these laws have in diluting minority voting access and therefore political power. It begins with a short historical overview of voting rights since the eradication of slavery, then offers background on the current legal climate in which voter ID laws are situated. The essay concludes with an analysis of Frank v. Walker as a case …
The Integration Of Roman Catholic Traditions And Evidence-Based Psychological Services, Thomas G. Plante
The Integration Of Roman Catholic Traditions And Evidence-Based Psychological Services, Thomas G. Plante
Psychology
The Roman Catholic Church is the largest, and most enduring continuous organization, secular or religious, of any kind in the world with a 2,000-plus-year history. It currently includes well over a billion people. Regardless of its size, scope, history, and impact, the Roman Catholic Church is often greatly misunderstood and people frequently maintain stereotypic and even discriminatory views about Catholics and their clerical leaders. The purpose of this article is to present the integration of the Roman Catholic tradition into psychological assessment and therapy and to provide several examples of this integration. The article highlights how this integration can be …
Disappearing Chairs And Related Matters: A Visual Essay For Wittgenstein’S Philosophical Investigations (Section 80), Michael R. Hill
Disappearing Chairs And Related Matters: A Visual Essay For Wittgenstein’S Philosophical Investigations (Section 80), Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Are there rules capturing the meaning of all possible uses (now, past, and future) of the word “chair”? Ludwig Wittgenstein raised this issue in Section 80 of the Philosophical Investigations where he stated: “I say, ‘There is a chair over there’”. Does “chair” in his utterance mean anything? For myself, this question can be approached autobiographically and chronologically. As a youngster, my earliest understanding of “chair” is reflected in the graphic illustration from a Dick and Jane reader (Figure 1) with re-imagined dialog: “This is a chair”. I understood a chair to be a human-made object — usually constructed from …

La Universidad Ixil Y La Descolonización Del Conocimiento, Giovanni Batz
Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis

Los Vecinos De Este Pueblo Quieren Fiesta: Celebraciones Patronales Y Corridas De Toros Durante La Prohibición Revolucionaria En Yucatán, Julián Dzul Nah
Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis

This article explores girls' participation in 1976 American Revolution Bicentennial celebrations through their national organizations. Members of the Girl Scouts and the Camp Fire Girls were deeply involved in the nation's displays of civic pride. Girls' organizations linked their ordinary service projects to the Bicentennial and created new projects as they caught the national bandwagon. To some extent, these efforts emphasized unquestioning patriotism, but each organization, propelled by second-wave feminism and social history, also absorbed and advanced efforts to recover multiple perspectives. Girls' organizations became public history spaces and girls in them saw the understanding of and dissemination of history …

The Power Of A Personal Testimony Booklet: Increasing Gospel Witness In Everyday Life, Patrick Bram Walker
The Power Of A Personal Testimony Booklet: Increasing Gospel Witness In Everyday Life, Patrick Bram Walker
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Evangelism is a key component of the Great Commission and a major responsibility for every Christ-Follower. The practice of personal evangelism, however, is frequently neglected by a majority of Christians. This project will initially examine the current state of personal evangelism in America and the scriptural expectation for all Christians to be frequent communicators of the gospel message. The ultimate purpose of this project is to demonstrate that a member of LivingStone Community Church can increase their Gospel witness in everyday life through the use of a written Personal Testimony Booklet. This pocket-sized booklet consists of two components. The first …
Sons Of Nehemiah: Raising The Level Of Leadership In Ten Pastor Revitalizers Of The Montgomery Baptist Association, Donald Neal Hughes
Sons Of Nehemiah: Raising The Level Of Leadership In Ten Pastor Revitalizers Of The Montgomery Baptist Association, Donald Neal Hughes
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
There are churches in America seeking vitality through the restorative and refreshing power of the Holy Spirit. The present term of renewal is called “church revitalization.” Each struggling congregation has or is securing a pastor revitalizer. The question many will ask is, “Are these holy shepherds high capacity leaders? Will they lead the church with a compelling vision, a devoted work ethic, a contagious passion, and a kingdom focus based on a community context?” The thesis project researches ten pastor revitalizers from Montgomery, Alabama. The researcher gives them the name Sons of Nehemiah to build rapport and accentuate Nehemiah’s biblical …

The Examination Of Grit In Southern Baptist Lead Pastors In Alabama, Kyle Bradley Hodges
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this mixed methods study was to understand the attribute of grit in current Sothern Baptist Convention (SBC) lead pastors in Alabama. Having first been coined as a separate attribute in 2007, there was much still to learn about grit and its qualities. This study attempted to research the impact of grit in Christian ministry. Grit was coined by Duckworth, Peterson, Matthews, & Kelly (2007) and is defined as the perseverance and passion for long term goals and the attainment of those goals. In this mixed-method study, grit was examined in lead pastors of SBC churches in Alabama …
Eudaimonic Happiness As A Convergence Point For Religion And Medicine: The Ukrainian Context, Uliana Lushch-Purii
Eudaimonic Happiness As A Convergence Point For Religion And Medicine: The Ukrainian Context, Uliana Lushch-Purii
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The paper is aimed to present arguments for consideration of eudaimonic happiness as a convergence point between religion (Christian denominations) and medicine in the contemporary world in general and Ukraine in particular. Similarities between eudaimonic definition of happiness and traditional interpretation of happiness as a virtuous good life in historic Christianity are shown. The present tendency of modernized Christian denominations in Ukraine to elaborate a secular context of happiness concept is traced. Based on analysis of contemporary religious information resources and documents, it is shown that nowadays the majority of Christian denominations in Ukraine concur in considering happiness with others, …
Pray And Vaccinate: Worship And Pastoral Care In Times Of Pandemic In Hungary, András Máté-Tóth
Pray And Vaccinate: Worship And Pastoral Care In Times Of Pandemic In Hungary, András Máté-Tóth
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The major churches in Hungary—Catholic, Calvinist and Lutheran—felt concerned about the Corona pandemic, especially about Sunday services. As in the spring wave, so in the autumn wave, the question of offline/online services was in the center of public communication. It has kerygmatic reasons—especially among Catholics—since, according to Vatican II, the Eucharist is the source and summit of the relationship with God. (Lumen Gentium 11.) Without Eucharistic celebration, congregations are "grace-poor" and priests, too, can feel deprived of their first-order mission and "service-poor." Similarly, Protestant pastors experience and exercise their priestly ministry primarily through Sunday worship, preaching, and the Lord's Prayer. …

Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Since 1990, The Substation has been the sole occupant of the conserved building at 45 Armenian Street. Over the years, it has transformed the once-abandoned power station into Singapore’s first artist-led multi-disciplinary arts centre. However, in February 2021, The Substation was officially asked to vacate the building. Although the current situation facing The Substation is not new or unique, its impending fate is emblematic of, and raises deep questions about the progressively precarious and capricious conditions of arts practice in Singapore. This editorial highlights four underlying problems that we should be concerned with.

Swiss American Historical Society Review
Having grandparents, aunts, and uncles who emigrated from Switzerland in the 1860s, I treasured the many occasions hearing stories of our ancestral homeland—the “old country.” With peers of my Swiss relatives, I reveled in August 1st celebrations, picnics, club house gatherings, sängerfests, and shooting events. Captivated by these stories and events, I wanted to know more about their life and times in Switzerland and—what happened after their arrival in America. My Swiss grandparents settled in a German-speaking area of Columbus, Ohio, known today as “German Village.” The first Swiss club in Columbus, the Grütli Verein, was founded in 1870. Beneficial …

Should Biomedical Research With Great Apes Be Restricted? A Systematic Review Of Reasons, Bernardo Aguilera, Javiera Perez Gomez, David Degrazia
Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications
Background
The use of great apes (GA) in invasive biomedical research is one of the most debated topics in animal ethics. GA are, thus far, the only animal group that has frequently been banned from invasive research; yet some believe that these bans could inaugurate a broader trend towards greater restrictions on the use of primates and other animals in research. Despite ongoing academic and policy debate on this issue, there is no comprehensive overview of the reasons advanced for or against restricting invasive research with GA. To address this gap, we conducted a systematic review of the reasons reported …
