A Reimagining Of The Chacoan World, Larry Benson, Richard W. Loose Feb 2021

A Reimagining Of The Chacoan World, Larry Benson, Richard W. Loose

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

A new paradigm of the Chacoan world is presented, wherein Chaco Canyon is considered to be a mostly unoccupied architectural complex that functioned primarily as a pilgrimage destination. Chaco was the political, religious, and social focal point of people living in outlying regions. The resident population of the Canyon consisted of a small number of caretakers, charged with maintaining great house structures, food supplies, and their ceremonial contents. Chacoan chiefdoms were mostly located in large, well-watered, agriculturally-based communities situated at the base of mountains that ring the San Juan Basin, e.g., the Chuskas. Chiefly elites lived year-round in those areas, …

Neo-Quinean And Neo-Aristotelian Metaontology : On Explanation, Theory Choice, And The Viability Of Ontological Inquiry, Micheál Vincent Lacey Feb 2021

Neo-Quinean And Neo-Aristotelian Metaontology : On Explanation, Theory Choice, And The Viability Of Ontological Inquiry, Micheál Vincent Lacey

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

This thesis is an exercise in comparative metaontology. I am centrally concerned with how one might choose between competing metaontological theories. To make my project tractable, I compare two contemporary metaontological approaches dominant in the literature: neo-Quineanism (N-Q) and neo-Aristotelianism (N-A). Peter van Inwagen, a representative of N-Q, claims that ontological inquiry should be conducted in the quantifier-variable idiom of first-order predicate logic; to know what exists, or what a theory says exists, we read our commitments off the regimented sentences that we affirm as true. E.J. Lowe, a representative of N-A objects to N-Q and claims that ontology should …

Translators' Prefaces To Literary Works A Means To Visibility Of Invisibility?: A Cda Approach To Analyze Translators' Prefaces As Part Of The Paratext, Sarah M. Fayed Ms. Feb 2021

Translators' Prefaces To Literary Works A Means To Visibility Of Invisibility?: A Cda Approach To Analyze Translators' Prefaces As Part Of The Paratext, Sarah M. Fayed Ms.

Computer Science

The preface as part of a book’s paratext is of great importance in terms of introducing the book to the reader. In the context of a translated book, it is essential because there are two elements to expand on: the source text (ST) and the translated text (TT). This paper aims to conduct a comparative analysis to understand more about: 1. The elements and features of the preface and also 2. The visibility/invisibility of the translators and 3. How this affected the decision making in the translation process. The proposed research question is how does the relationship between invisibility, social …

This study aimed to investigate the levels of university students' beliefs about counseling based on three dimensions (intent, stigma tolerance, and expertness) and the differences on these levels based on gender, college, and previous experience with counseling. The study sample included 593 university students (60% female) from different academic years. The students responded to Beliefs about Psychological Services Questionnaire and coping style questionnaire. The findings showed that the students had high levels of intent and stigma tolerance and …

A Buddhist-Informed Conceptual Framework For Compassion Fatigue Prevention, Andrei A. Agapi Feb 2021

A Buddhist-Informed Conceptual Framework For Compassion Fatigue Prevention, Andrei A. Agapi

University Honors Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to present Buddhist meditation practices and modes of investigation that can mitigate compassion fatigue, some of which have not yet been acknowledged in this research field. Conducting a literature review, I found multiple frameworks for compassion fatigue that have different and sometimes contradictory causes, and a lack of clear differentiation between sympathy, empathy and compassion. Both of these aspects are explored. I explain the Buddhist approach to compassion, and the cause of fatigue from a Yogachara philosophical perspective. Then, I write about a bodhisattva’s training in no-self, the five-aggregate model of mind, Chenrezig practice, …
