Rethinking Museum Shops In The Context Of The Climate Crisis, Jamie Larkin

Art Faculty Articles and Research

This paper critically evaluates the role of the museum shop in the context of the climate crisis. Specifically, it considers how museum shops might be reconceptualized as an important facet of visitor communication within the emerging category of climate museums. Theoretically, the paper references the conceptual linkages of material and commodity culture in relation to climate issues, while practically, it frames the shop as a space that can both support exhibition messaging and prompt behavioral changes among visitors that might help reduce their planetary impact. These claims are explored with reference to the concepts of “gestalt” and “nudge” theory. The …

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Moving toward a sustainable global society requires substantial change in both social and technological systems. This sustainability is dependent not only on addressing the environmental impacts of current social and technological systems, but also on addressing the social, economic and political harms that continue to be perpetuated through systematic forms of oppression and the exclusion of Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) communities. To adequately identify and address these harms, we argue that scientists, practitioners, and communities need a transdis-ciplinary framework that integrates multiple types of knowledge, in particular, Indigenous and experiential knowledge. Hong Kong- and Germany-based fashion brand Esprit was actually founded in 1968 in San Francisco with the aim of bringing a “sunny Californian attitude” to its wares, now sold in 40 countries via 761 directly managed retail stores and some 6,332 wholesale points of sale.

Its Esprit Cares Trust, set up in 1993, provides financial support and charitable donations to various communities and includes an annual exchange scholarship for HKDI design students to participate in full-semester or short study trips to renowned design schools in Europe.

Professor Michael Krohn has a background in mechanical engineering and industrial design. As well as his positions at the Zurich University of the Arts, he runs his own design agency. Ian Gwilt is Professor of Design at the University of South Australia and leads the Design Research in Health and Wellbeing initiative at the School of Art, Architecture and Design.
