This qualitative case study utilized critical media literacy to guide the analysis of the depiction of racially and ethnically diverse college students in contemporary popular films. Participants in this study were racially and ethnically diverse undergraduate students enrolled at a private, predominantly White institution in the United States. Three primary themes emerged from this study. First, students of color were more apt to recognize stereotypical portrayals of people of color in the films, whereas White students’ responses were more attuned with color-blind racial ideology (CBRI). Second, media-centered discussions provided an outlet for students of color to share their personal experiences …

The Decline And Recovery Of Apostolic Leadership In Adventist Ministry, Anthony Wagenersmith
The Decline And Recovery Of Apostolic Leadership In Adventist Ministry, Anthony Wagenersmith
Journal of Adventist Mission Studies
There are broad patterns of growth: plateau, decline, and ultimately renewal or death among Christian denominations and networks. One of the factors that catalyze movement dynamics early on—as well as their potential renewal—is the degree to which a church’s founding leaders embody and transfer the apostolic function for future generations (cf. Saarinen 1994; Morgan 2017). This article traces the initial function and decline of apostolicity among Seventh-day Adventist ministers as a case study with implications for contemporary Adventism and beyond.
After providing an analysis of leadership in the New Testament—with particular emphasis on apostles, apostolicity, and their relationship with elders—an …

Background The Seventh-day Adventist Church is a growing global denomination with strict substance use abstinence and recommended dietary requirements that together are called the “Health Message.” Abstinence from alcohol and tobacco is a requirement of membership and a plant-based diet is strongly advised. Purpose While a wide variety of research has reported the Adventist health advantage, very little research has been conducted on Adventist members’ attitudes toward and adherence to the Health Message. This research examines members' views, from a global survey, about the health message, personal adherence, and belief that adherence ensures salvation. Methods The survey was conducted in …
Humanist But Not Radical: The Educational Philosophy Of Thiruvalluvar Kural, Devin K. Joshi
Humanist But Not Radical: The Educational Philosophy Of Thiruvalluvar Kural, Devin K. Joshi
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Humanist ideas in education have been promoted by both Western thinkers and classical wisdom texts of Asia. Exploring this connection, I examine the educational philosophy of an iconic ancient Tamil (Indian) text, the Thiruvalluvar Kural, by juxtaposing it with a contemporary humanist classic, Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed. As this comparative study reveals, both texts offer humanist visions of relevance to education, politics, and society. Notably, however, the Kural takes what might be described as a more mainstream humanist stance vis-à-vis Freire’s radical humanist approach. Nevertheless, both educational philosophies share a common humanist bond representing important breakthroughs within their …
"Doing It For The 'Gram?" The Representational Politics Of Popular Humanitarianism, Orlando Woods, Siew Ying Shee
"Doing It For The 'Gram?" The Representational Politics Of Popular Humanitarianism, Orlando Woods, Siew Ying Shee
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This paper explores how digital photography – the practice of taking pictures and sharing them via social media – can give rise to representational politics. These politics are pronounced when disadvantaged people and places are the objects of digital representation, as they become (dis)empowered by being implicated in the affective economy of difference. Empirically, we examine the representational practices that Singaporean voluntourists, and companies that organise overseas humanitarian projects, engage in. We highlight how their motivations for engaging with these projects can be obfuscated by the opportunity to generate influence on Instagram, which can then shape the practice of popular …

From Women’S Learning (Fuxue) To Gender Studies: Feminist Challenges To Modern Confucianism, Sor-Hoon Tan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The promotion of Confucianism to offer solutions to contemporary problems, better alternatives to the patently unsatisfactory status quo of our world and the tired ideals that have dominated academic and global discourses, should not be mistaken for naïve traditionalism advocating the revival of Confucianism as it was understood and practiced in its historical milieu. This is especially pertinent in the area of gender relations. Chenyang Li pointed out nearly two decades ago: as “the philosophical-religious tradition that originated in Confucius and was further developed by scholars and supporters of later times … there is little doubt that the answer to …

The Role Of Parents’ Negative Emotional Symptoms, Time Homebound, And Parent-Infant Interactions During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Kolbie A. Vincent, Katherine G. Golway, Cara H. Cashon
Grawemeyer Colloquium Papers
Parent-child interaction plays a vital role in child development. Previous research has shown that parents’ negative emotional symptoms are related to the quality of parent-child interactions.
Parents with depression have been found to be less engaged and spend less time playing with their babies at 3 months of age compared to parents without depression. While depression has been researched extensively, there is a scarcity in the literature on other negative emotions, such as anxiety and general stress and their relation to parent-child interaction.
The COVID-19 pandemic has led to significant changes in the daily lives of caregivers and their infants …

BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
Against the context of the consecutive world financial crisis, this paper aims to evaluates the merits of market-based against bank-based financing by analyzing the correlation between financial structure and systemic risk of eleven countries within the MENA region. Within the study three hypotheses are tested; first, if financial structure and systemic risk are significantly related, second, if this relation is non-linear relationship and the third one is if bank financing doesn’t contribute to systemic risk above the threshold financial structure value. To our knowledge no paper has addressed this issue in the selected countries. This paper uses a balanced panel …

Digital Humanities: A Paradigm For The 21st Century, Laila C.A. Helmi
BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
Our life is becoming increasingly digital and digitized, and the recent shift to an online environment is a major leap. While this rapid advancement in technology has made itself a prominent feature in such fields as medicine, marketing, communications and even education, many assume that the humanities have become a field for dinosaurs. The assumption is that the humanities focus their research output on writing and are firmly founded in a culture of books – a form of records that seem unchangeable in nature, dogmatic in intellect, and fossil-like in their searchability. The world of the digital, on the other …
The Ottoman Constitutional Experience Under Sultan Abdel Hamid Ii (1876-1909)التجربة الدستورية العثمانية في عهد السلطان عبد الحميد الثاني 1876-1909, Hassan Hallak
BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
ABSTRACT: The research discusses “the Ottoman constitutional experience under the rule of Sultan Abdul Hamid II 1876-1909”. The “Mabouthan Council” or the parliament and the Senate were established under the said rule. The Ottoman Constitution was issued in 1876, to be the first constitution recorded in the Ottoman State. Thus, Sultan Abdul Hamid II was the first Ottoman sultan who modernized the Ottoman State, its organizations and mandate from traditional organizations and legislations, thus opening up to western organizations while maintaining the Islamic Sharia.
It is worth mentioning that the opposition forces of soldiers and civilians, Turkish and other nationalities, …

“Twixt Devil And Deep Sea”:William Empson As Poet-Critic, Essam Fattouh
BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
This paper attempts to offer a fresh examination of the relationship between Empson’s early career as a poet and his later erudite, largely influential, critical output. The theme of waste, which dominates his Collected Poems, partly accounts for his decision to abandon poetry, and invest his interest in complexity and ambiguity in a modernist/postmodernist procedure, way ahead of contemporary literary theory at the time. The theme of waste is further highlighted through readings of crucial key poems, as several critics of his time, such as Leavis and Alvarez, accurately signaled. The Empson canon is, thus, enriched, inviting the application of …

Report On Japanese-Language Manga Magazine Survey 2020, Victoria Rahbar
Journal of East Asian Libraries
The North American manga boom occurred in the early 2000s, but the anime and manga studies boom is occurring now as fans grow up and design their research based on childhoods complete with idols, magical girls, ninjas, and superheroes. Japanese-language manga magazines are one text utilized by these fans turned anime and manga studies researchers, and yet there has been no documentation prior on where patrons are able to access these magazines in North America. Thus, the Japanese-language manga magazine survey was primarily developed to document the availability of Japanese-language manga magazines at North American East Asian academic libraries with …
