HKDI alumni making a name for themselves

Every year, the Hong Kong Design Institute produces thousands of graduates across the many faculties it operates, including the Departments of Fashion and Image Design (FID), of Architecture, Interior & Product Design (AIP), and of Communication Design & Digital Media (CDM), to name a few. Among these outstanding design talents, a handful are already creating a name for themselves in the industry through competitions and awards. We asked some recent HKDI graduates what their long-term objectives are as designers. This is what they told us.

Studio Showcase - Perceptual Thinkers

SIGNED: The Magazine of The Hong Kong Design Institute

Perceptual Thinkers draws inspiration from the behaviour and clothing preferences of people living with autism. Its clothing lines aim to give an insight into this specialist perception by using stimulating fabrics and playful design patterns to experience clothing as a sensorial phenomenon.

It believes that the clothes are a means of communication - that the way we dress is the way we interact with other people. And that clothes are capable of serving many different needs, either completely ordinary or special ones.

Because they follow the ethos of design for all, these clothes are as suitable for neurotypical people as …

Searching For Truth, Searching For Feeling, Zamara Tomko Mar 2021

Searching For Truth, Searching For Feeling, Zamara Tomko

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

History is not only found in textbooks. Historical fiction often utilizes depictions of historical events as a backdrop or plot device for a fictional story, and for many people, this is their only exposure to certain periods or events in the past. This essay looks at the validity of using fiction as historical evidence by analyzing Hans Fallada’s Every Man Dies Alone portrayal of German life in World War II and comparing it to academic sources. It argues that a novel evokes empathy by juxtaposing an imagined story alongside historical facts; however, the fictional account can also create a false …

The Photography Of Graciela Iturbide: Transcending Colonization And Oneself, Noelia Andrea Caceres Mar 2021

The Photography Of Graciela Iturbide: Transcending Colonization And Oneself, Noelia Andrea Caceres

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

This paper analyzes some of the works of contemporary Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide (born 1942). In this paper, I argue that Iturbide’s work speaks to how the Mexican population and culture transcended the history of colonization, particularly works like Virgen de Guadalupe Chalma, México (Our Lady of Guadalupe, Chalma, Mexico) (2007) and Primera Comunión, Chalma, Estado de México (First Communion, Chalma, State of Mexico) (1984). In addition, I discuss how her works speak to me personally as a Latin American native and also how they tell us about her own personal traumas. Before discussing these issues by means of several …

Women’S Contributions To Guitar Orchestras Prior To 1930, Mariette Stephenson Mar 2021

Women’S Contributions To Guitar Orchestras Prior To 1930, Mariette Stephenson

Music Faculty Publications

Guitar orchestras were at their height of popularity in the late 1800's and early 1900's in Europe, South America and North America, and played an important role in the promotion of the suffragette movement. Although the popularity of this ensemble type declined after WW1, they have seen a strong resurgence within the past 20 years. Many influential women in the guitar world, including Madame Sydney Pratton and Vahdah Olcott-Bickford, played crucial roles in the development of guitar orchestras. That continues to this day with composers such as the internationally renown Dutch composer Annette Kruisbrink writing works for this ensemble format …
