The Origins Of Religious Disbelief: A Dual Inheritance Approach, Will M. Gervais, Maxine B. Najle, Nava Caluori
The Origins Of Religious Disbelief: A Dual Inheritance Approach, Will M. Gervais, Maxine B. Najle, Nava Caluori
Psychology Graduate Research
Widespread religious disbelief represents a key testing ground for theories of religion. We evaluated the predictions of three prominent theoretical approaches—secularization, cognitive byproduct, and dual inheritance—in a nationally representative (United States, N = 1,417) data set with preregistered analyses and found considerable support for the dual inheritance perspective. Of key predictors of religious disbelief, witnessing fewer credible cultural cues of religious commitment was the most potent, β = .28, followed distantly by reflective cognitive style, β = .13, and less advanced mentalizing, β = .05. Low cultural exposure predicted about 90% higher odds of atheism than did peak cognitive reflection, …

Digital devices are a cornucopia of information, but they are also attention vortexes and a suit of armour protecting us from having to engage with nearby strangers. While often decried for its negative effects, one organisation is actively using the power of the internet to create global public spaces. People actively seek out strangers in these spaces, to learn about others, and better understand themselves.

Baking and eating bread in a small group seems to have some sort of mystical power to break down barriers, not only between strangers, but between different races, ages, genders and worldviews. Now, every week in Amsterdam and surrounding areas, people are discovering this “power of bread” as it creates dialogue between neighbours, within communities, and between locals and the outside world.

More than this, Street Debater points to the power of conversation as a way to help people in need that goes far beyond a few coins.

From Camp Meetings To Crusades: African American Religious Songs In Context, Konner B. Smith
Honors College Theses
The images found throughout African American religious songs are timeless, yet they reflect the realities of their particular historical and cultural contexts, explaining those circumstances from the view of the African American community. Despite the differences in sound, there is a strong sense of continuity between each era, as compositions from slave songs to rap use certain passages from scripture to emphasize the themes of freedom, hope, and perseverance. From the spiritual to the gospel to contemporary religious rap, both history and hope have been lifted up and transformed in the voices of oppressed and enduring African Americans.

Aesthetics From The Visual Artists’ Viewpoint, Dena Shottenkirk
Aesthetics From The Visual Artists’ Viewpoint, Dena Shottenkirk
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
How to characterize aesthetics has been revived with Bence Nanay’s Aesthetics as Philosophy of Perception. Reviewing criticisms made by Dustin Stokes, this paper makes the argument that Nanay’s problem is broader than what Stokes points to, as it involves the problem of property attribution and the difference between perceiving a property in a nonaesthetic situation and an aesthetic one. The latter context involves not attributing a property to an object, but rather the process of perceiving low-level features. The problem of how to characterize aesthetics is thus solved by looking at three things: recent research into gist perception, Gareth …
Authenticity, Universality, And Expression In Song: The Case Of Flamenco, Peter Manuel
Authenticity, Universality, And Expression In Song: The Case Of Flamenco, Peter Manuel
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
This article explores questions of aesthetic expression and meaning in song, focusing in particular on the enigmatic dynamics involved in song’s combination of abstract and lyrical dimensions of import. These questions are especially overt and actively debated in flamenco, where an ideology of authenticity and suffering, akin to that in African-American genres such as blues or rap, implies that a singer must draw on certain profound biographical experiences rather than universal emotions. However, the accounts of various performers suggest alternate expressive processes in which singers of any background can use a certain sort of role-playing to generate actual emotions that …
