The Port Of St. Augustine During The British Regime, Part Ii, Wilbur H. Siebert Mar 2021

The Port Of St. Augustine During The British Regime, Part Ii, Wilbur H. Siebert

Florida Historical Quarterly

Loyal to King George III, East Florida soon became involved with her rebellious neighbors to the northward. Wartime was reflected in the shipping at St. Augustine and the privateering in nearby waters. The first hostility of that neighborhood was the seizure of one hundred and eleven barrels and thirty-seven kegs of gunpowder from the English brigantine Betsy in July 1775 by a South Carolina sloop outside the bar. The aggressor escaped to the northward.

Pioneer Florida: Mexican Squadron At Key West, 1827, T. Frederick Davis

Florida Historical Quarterly

All general encyclopedias of American biography include an account of the life of David Porter (1780-1843), United States naval officer, whose exploits while in command of the Essex in the South Pacific in the War of 1812, remain a saga in the history of our early navy. These accounts, however, do not include an important event in Commodore Porter’s career, the scene of which was laid at and around Key West, Florida, in 1827, and therefore is a part of Florida’s history.

Notes On The “Catalogo De Los Fondos De Las Floridas", Albert C. Manucy

Florida Historical Quarterly

The reference is to the great Mississippi, and on this keynote is sounded the broad theme of Catalogo de los Fondos de las Floridas, which, in free translation might be titled “Catalog of the Florida Papers.” Published in format similar to the well-known Carnegie archival guides, the book is an illuminating index to an interesting period in the history of the area between Savannah and New Orleans, from the Florida Keys to the lower Mississippi Valley.

The Negro Abraham, Kenneth W. Porter Mar 2021

The Negro Abraham, Kenneth W. Porter

Florida Historical Quarterly

One of the most remarkable personalities produced by the African race in this country before general emancipation was an illiterate runaway slave who spent almost all his mature life among Seminole Indians. This judgment is, perhaps, either too cautious to be meaningful or too bold to be convincing, according to the direction from which one chooses to approach it.

This supportive statement examines a philosophical conception of the self and how it can be identified through experience, consciousness, and perception by focusing on a human inclination to rationalize, or concretize, that which is everchanging. The methods of exploring this concept were achieved by examining the formal structure of composition and materials through the process of visual art. By pushing against historical traditions of creating spatial illusions in visual art, we can conclude that the legibility of an artwork is equally dependent on the experiential world as it is the social construction of image making. The question that is left …

Theses and Dissertations

At the door of the house who will come knocking? / An open door, we enter / A closed door, a den / The world pulse beats beyond my door (Bachelard, 25).Border is a dichotomous concept. Within a border exists both the potential for protection and alienation. By exploring the closure in borders around people in both a family and a country setting I am exploring communication on both an interpersonal and intrapersonal level; how our understanding of ourselves and others can affect us; how we can be close to each other and help each other. I suggest that our …

Developing A Discrete Event Simulation Model To Overcome Human Trafficking, Sydney Meier Mar 2021

Developing A Discrete Event Simulation Model To Overcome Human Trafficking, Sydney Meier

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Human trafficking is a complex issue that affects society and the global economy. This societal problem involves the commercial exchange and exploitation of people through forced labor, domestic servitude, and sex trade. Human trafficking is considered the third most profitable organized crime in the world. By analyzing the flow of monetary gains/resources, information and trafficked people from the perspective of traffickers, police force, and advocacy organizations, this research aims to develop a discrete event simulation model to represent this complex system. The following paper describes the developmental process of acquiring data and creating a base model. While the model is …

Two Sides To Every Coin: Analyzing The Historical Perspectives Of Gender Nonconforming Individuals In America, Sydney Meier Mar 2021

Two Sides To Every Coin: Analyzing The Historical Perspectives Of Gender Nonconforming Individuals In America, Sydney Meier

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

For some, the idea of any gender other than male/man or female/woman is incomprehensible. For others, gender is seen as a spectrum where individuals flow between man, woman, or somewhere in between. Most live in the gray area where it is recognized that two sexes and two genders exist with a little leeway for variances. The gender binary is a pervasive social construct that limits society due to the refusal of some to accept nonconforming individuals into the feminist umbrella of inclusivity. In this paper, I argue that rather than a binary, gender should be accepted as a spectrum due …

The Story...Behind The Stories: Kait/A-State News Film Collection-- Crowdsourcing Vernacular Metadata, Gary William Jones

Student Theses and Dissertations

KAIT-TV in Jonesboro, AR, broadcasting on Very High Frequency (VHF) Channel 8 from a rural location on a gravel road five miles north of the city, first began transmitting reqular programming on Monday, July 15, 1963. As one of the first employees of the television station, I took part in the historic event as a high-school student who worked full time as a photographer—and later as a commercial filmmaker and live television director. During the 1970s and 1980, before personal camcorders and the later ubiquity of smartphone videos and internet distribution, KAIT’s news film cameras provided virtually the only public …

Using True Experiments To Study Culture: Manipulations, Measurement Issues, And The Question Of Appropriate Control Groups, Christine Ma-Kellams Mar 2021

Using True Experiments To Study Culture: Manipulations, Measurement Issues, And The Question Of Appropriate Control Groups, Christine Ma-Kellams

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Social group memberships are primarily studied in quasi-experimental contexts, but how can culture, class and gender be manipulated in true experimental designs? This review highlights the different empirical strategies that can be used to manipulate “culture” as it relates to race/ethnicity (activation of thinking styles, language, and priming of cultural constructs), class (social standing, group status, or perceived social status), and gender (role salience, gender identity, sex hormone administration). I review measurement issues related to manipulation checks and the problem of what construct is tapped by the manipulation, appropriate control groups, and intersectional identities or group memberships.
