By And For Jewish Women Only: The Musical Film "The Heart That Sings", Celia E. Rothenberg Mar 2021

By And For Jewish Women Only: The Musical Film "The Heart That Sings", Celia E. Rothenberg

Journal of Religion & Film

The musical film, “The Heart that Sings” (2011), written and directed by Robin Saex Garbose, is part of a genre of films created by and for Orthodox Jewish women. Heart provides a case study that illustrates the depth and breadth of Lubavitch Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneerson’s (1902-1994) influence on Jews and Jewish life well beyond his own community members. Schneerson’s outreach work via his shlichim, or emissaries, to unobservant Jews is well-recognized. The extent and nuance of his influence on a broad cross-section of Jews, however, has yet to be fully traced. Heart tells its viewers that Jewish women …

Sea-Level Rise And Settlement At Ta’Ab Nuk Na, Belize: Analyses Of Marine Sediment From The I-Line, 4m Transect, Conner B. Flynt

LSU Master's Theses

The ancient Maya of Mesoamerica created a culture with writing, religion, and vast trade networks. These trade networks are evident on the southern coast of Belize, where archaeologists have found sites dedicated to salt making. One of these sites, Ta’ab Nuk Na, was the subject of this thesis. Sediment and charcoal samples were collected from this site by the Underwater Maya Research Group led by Heather McKillop and E. Cory Sills. For my thesis research, I subjected these samples and components within them to loss-on ignition, radiometric dating, and microscopic analysis. Loss-on ignition was used to ascertain organic material percentage …

Staging Reformation: Religious Theater In England, 1525-1553, Alexandra R. Whitley Mar 2021

Staging Reformation: Religious Theater In England, 1525-1553, Alexandra R. Whitley

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis analyzes and explores the role of privately sponsored religious theater and dramatic performance in the English Reformation, 1525-1553. In the sixteenth century, most theater was religious in nature, and audiences were accustomed to receiving clear moral and political messaging in the form of dramatic entertainment. Plays that were written and performed specifically for individual monarchs also include these commentaries and moral arguments, and can provide historians with significant insight into what messages were presented to monarchs. These insights are particularly illuminating in studies of the cultural progress of the English Reformation under Henry VIII, Edward VI, and Mary …

Catholics & Cultures As An Act Of Improvisation: A Response, Thomas M. Landy Mar 2021

Catholics & Cultures As An Act Of Improvisation: A Response, Thomas M. Landy

Journal of Global Catholicism

This essay responds to seven articles published in the same issue of the Journal of Global Catholicism on the use of Catholics & Cultures, a multimedia website, as a pedagogical resource for college classrooms. The site is deliberately presented in a fashion that undermines notions of center and periphery and presents Catholicism from a lay, lived-religion perspective as the multicultural faith that it is, minimizing reference to religious typologies. Particular attention is given to how to navigate tensions around theorizing, categorizing and sorting information for cross-cultural comparison. Given scholars’ current state of knowledge, writing about and teaching about global Catholicism …

Catholics & Cultures: A Panoramic View In Search Of Greater Understanding, Stephanie M. Wong Mar 2021

Catholics & Cultures: A Panoramic View In Search Of Greater Understanding, Stephanie M. Wong

Journal of Global Catholicism

While internet-based technologies can open up greater awareness of the world or create self-perpetuating echo-chambers, the Catholics & Cultures project aspires to do the former. Aiming to ‘widen the lens’ on the variety of Catholic communities and practices, the site delivers on this goal by introducing viewers to a vast array of articles, pictures and videos from around the world. The organization of the site by country and by certain key features of lived Catholicism offers some interpretive guidance. However, the project could be strengthened as a pedagogical resource if it were more extensively thematized and hosted reflections on potential …

The Value Of Online Resources: Reflections On Teaching An Introduction To Global Christianity, Hillary Kaell Mar 2021

The Value Of Online Resources: Reflections On Teaching An Introduction To Global Christianity, Hillary Kaell

Journal of Global Catholicism

Reflecting on my experience teaching Introduction to Global Christianity, this essay ponders questions at the heart of undergraduate teaching: How can we encourage students to utilize online sources? How can we empower them to seek out answers to their questions? It offers practical examples of how I have used the Catholics & Cultures website in my classroom at a large public university. In particular, I reflect on my experience working with students who are mostly of Catholic heritage, but from many cultural and social contexts.

Teaching Sexuality On The Catholics & Cultures Website: A Refreshing Turn Toward The Longue Durée, Marc Roscoe Loustau Mar 2021

Teaching Sexuality On The Catholics & Cultures Website: A Refreshing Turn Toward The Longue Durée, Marc Roscoe Loustau

Journal of Global Catholicism

I present a close reading of the Catholics & Cultures (C&C) website’s treatment of sexuality-related issues and discuss this material in relation to debates about how to teach sexuality in religious studies and theology classrooms. The C&C website occasionally and intermittently uses a typical “contemporary issues” approach that considers sexuality in relation to legal and legislative decisions and government policies. In contrast, country profiles consistently situate sexuality in relation processes like nation building, urbanization, and lay Catholics’ growing authority. My interpretation highlights the site’s decision to emphasize the longue durée, long-term and deep structural processes driving cultural and religious changes. …

Ritual Among The Scilohtac: Global Catholicism, The Nacirema, And Interfaith Studies, Anita Houck Mar 2021

Ritual Among The Scilohtac: Global Catholicism, The Nacirema, And Interfaith Studies, Anita Houck

Journal of Global Catholicism

More than six decades after its publication, Horace Miner’s 1956 article “Body Ritual among the Nacirema” remains a reliable pedagogical tool, remarkably successful in helping students see their own ethnocentric biases. Catholics & Cultures has potential to do similar work. The site lacks some of what makes Miner’s text so effective, in particular its capacity to bring about a sudden shift in perception. The site also shares some of the article’s limitations, particularly in focusing on ritual to the relative exclusion of other aspects of religion. That said, the site can help students gain the religious literacy and develop the …

Focus On The Busy Intersections Of Culture And Cultural Change, Laura Elder Mar 2021

Focus On The Busy Intersections Of Culture And Cultural Change, Laura Elder

Journal of Global Catholicism

The dynamics of religious resurgence reveal the important ways that religious ritual and performance are meaning making spaces which are not self-contained or cut off from the rest of culture, but rather are a key locus of cultural change. A renewed emphasis on the busy intersections of meaning making – as rituals are connected, disconnected, and reconnected to other domains of social life – would improve the utility of the Catholics & Cultures website for understanding global cultural change. And a renewed emphasis on cultural change would also provide a better means for exploring reflexively by seeking to understand both …

A Widened Angle Of View: Teaching Theology And Racial Embodiment, Mara Brecht Mar 2021

A Widened Angle Of View: Teaching Theology And Racial Embodiment, Mara Brecht

Journal of Global Catholicism

Today’s undergraduate students are digital natives, shaped by constant access to information and countless experiences of encountering the world through the convenience of a screen. The ostensible comfort students have with difference gives way to a paradox, and one that’s made especially apparent in the theology classroom: Students are comfortable with seeing difference and particularity at a distance, but not adept at locating difference and particularity “at home.” I contend that Catholics & Cultures can help students from the dominant culture—namely, white students who comprise the vast majority of Catholic college students—destabilize their notion of the Catholic tradition as tightly …

Introducing Catholics & Cultures: Ethnography, Encyclopedia, Cyborg, Mathew N. Schmalz Mar 2021

Introducing Catholics & Cultures: Ethnography, Encyclopedia, Cyborg, Mathew N. Schmalz

Journal of Global Catholicism

In introducing the Catholics & Cultures site and the articles in this special issue, this essay initially locates the overall Catholic & Cultures project within the traditions of ethnography and encyclopedia. Drawing extensively on the work of J. Z. Smith, this essay reflects upon the theoretical implications of emphasizing the diversity of Catholicism in and through a web-based platform that facilitates comparative study and pedagogy. This essay then more specifically considers the web-based aspects of Catholics & Cultures by identifying a nascent cyborgian aesthetic in the site and considering how the site might eventually engage post-modern themes and concerns.

A Strange Land And A Peculiar Problem: Using Local Knowledge To Resolve Ambiguous Property Descriptions In Appalachia, William L. Spotswood Mar 2021

A Strange Land And A Peculiar Problem: Using Local Knowledge To Resolve Ambiguous Property Descriptions In Appalachia, William L. Spotswood

William & Mary Law Review Online

Conveying property in Appalachia can be somewhat like a box of chocolates: “You never know what you’re gonna get.” Carved by ancient rivers and winding streams, the seemingly never-ending “hollers” and hills of Appalachia can disorient even the best navigator. Couple the region’s rugged topography with an already ambiguous demarcation system, and properties once mapped by metes and bounds descriptions become impossible to re-create with any sort of certainty. Thus, though rooted in a desire for clarity, the combination of mountainous terrain and imperfect demarcation results in a property system riddled with ambiguity. Due to this inherent definitional problem in …

What Can You Do With Unwanted Holy Cards And Grandma's Religious Statues? Well, That Depends, Kayla Harris, Sarah Burke Cahalan Mar 2021

What Can You Do With Unwanted Holy Cards And Grandma's Religious Statues? Well, That Depends, Kayla Harris, Sarah Burke Cahalan

Marian Library Faculty Publications

As librarians at the University of Dayton’s Marian Library, we help curate a collection of religious artifacts that, depending on how you count it, numbers in the hundreds of thousands. It includes postage stamps, wine labels, books, statues and rosaries. Many of the items are Catholic and have been gifted to the library by charitable individuals looking to do the right thing with a family heirloom or the collection of a recently deceased loved one. Donations could include anything from medieval manuscripts to a car air freshener featuring Our Lady of Guadalupe. In many cases, donations are welcome. But …

Undergraduate Perception Of Peer Leadership In The Writing Center, Sabrina Louissaint Mar 2021

Undergraduate Perception Of Peer Leadership In The Writing Center, Sabrina Louissaint

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Writing center scholarship offers a plethora of research in the field of composition including different practices and skillsets offered to students. Hosten et al. (2016) describe writing centers to be an incubator for leadership skills, one that creates a blueprint for student leaders to succeed. Situated within the field of composition and rhetoric, this IRB-approved thesis acknowledges a gap in research on the role writing centers play in the development of undergraduate consultants’ leadership skills. Through interviewing various writing center directors as well as current and former undergraduate consultants from five universities, I examine peer leadership perception, while uncovering the …

L’Adieu Hors De Tout Lieu. L’Espace Funéraire Réinventé Par J. Amado, Réimaginé Par O. Fazwy, Dahlia El-Séguiny Mar 2021

L’Adieu Hors De Tout Lieu. L’Espace Funéraire Réinventé Par J. Amado, Réimaginé Par O. Fazwy, Dahlia El-Séguiny

Regards

In The Double Death of Quincas-Water-Bray by Jorge Amado and its Egyptian cinematographic adaptation, The Paradise of the Fallen Angels by Ossama Fawzy, the funerary preparation leads to an ironic reflection on life and death, and the confrontation between the value systems of the bourgeoisie and the marginalized.
This article studies the question of borders, “real” or virtual, between narrative spaces.
It is based on the concept of heterotopia (Michel Foucault), which offers a reflection on the constitution of a “different space” within the real location, and the notion of intermediality (Silvestra Mariniello), which questions the conceptual space that emerges …

Throughout history, the integration of archival images into cinema has taken different forms depending on contexts and styles. Whether in fiction, documentary or experimental filmmaking, archival footage has been used for different purposes and for different reasons. Over time, this practice turns into an aesthetic and is referred to as found footage. This article asks the question of the link between cinema constructed from found footage and the philosophical concept of “heterotopias” developed by Michel Foucault, by studying the films representing the plays of Ziad Rahbani Bennesbe la boukra chou? and Film ameriki tawil, released in 2016, whose …

« 1982 », De Oualid Mouannes, Pamela Nassour

Regards

War is the main element in the Lebanese collective consciousness and memory. Throughout the years, Lebanese citizens fight its residue, which still traumatizes them and defines their existence. For artists, the reaction appeared through their work, and in this article, the Lebanese film 1982 by director Oualid Mouaness will be tackled. This film is analyzed through its aesthetics and plot. Mouaness had a story to tell, like any other Lebanese witnessing that era. Thus, his film 1982 is to be added to the long list of Lebanese war films. Yet, what makes it different? In this article, we study Mouaness’s …

Les Transferts De La Littérature Occidentale. Alibis Culturels Ou Réception D’Archétypes ?, Michel Serceau Mar 2021

Les Transferts De La Littérature Occidentale. Alibis Culturels Ou Réception D’Archétypes ?, Michel Serceau

Regards

During the entire 20th century, dozens of Western literary works and plays were adapted to the Egyptian screen in hundreds of films.
The Western works adapted by Egyptian filmmakers were chosen because of the universal aspect of the archetypes and social issues at the heart of these, and because of their dramatic – even melodramatic – appeal in the eyes of the viewers.
Film directors preferred to adapt novels that were not deeply committed to a social and realist ideology, while still drawing the high esteem enjoyed by literature towards cinema, which, in its infancy, was a practice in search …

Du Roman « Zeth » Au Feuilleton « Bint Ismaha Zeth » Ou Le Traitement De L’Histoire Dans Une Adaptation Télévisuelle Égyptienne, Ramla Ayari Charif

Regards

The issue of adapting literary works for television has only recently begun to arouse researchers’ interest. Egypt, the leading country in television production and the imagining of literary works on television across the Arab world, witnessed a new lease of life from 2011 to 2014.
The TV series Bint ʾismaha Zeth, produced in 2013 by Kamla Abouzekri and Khairy Beshara, is a striking illustration of the phenomenon.
Adapted from the novel Zeth written by Sonallah Ibrahim, the TV fiction retraces, through the story of its heroine, the history of Egypt from 1952 to 2011.

Symbolique Et Oblicité Politique Dans Deux Adaptations Égyptiennes Du Comte De Monte-Crist, Randa Sabry

Regards

After exploring the diversity of the elements borrowed from The Count of Monte Cristo by the two adaptations of Henri Barakat – Amir al-intiqam and Amir al-dahaa – this article analyzes the way they work towards their own coherence through a cultural acclimatization on different levels and by the grafting of a subplot with political implications in line with the social context of 1950s and 1960s Egypt.
Far from accomplishing only his own revenge, the hero is led, in the wake of a political prisoner, to join the sphere of rebellion against the representative of tyranny and to prepare for …

By adapting Sonallah Ibrahim’s Zaat, the eponymous TV show deeply transforms the original novel, unfolding new meanings for the viewer in the context of post-revolutionary Egypt.
Through a comparative analysis of the novel and the TV show, this study intends to understand how the show offers a portrait of Egyptian society and a portrait of a woman that are inscribed within the renewal of the political gaze Egyptian society develops on herself.
Simultaneously, this gaze questions how gender relations are brought to the screen, and how they are linked to social and national issues.

“We Already Look Amazing, We Just Need Designers To Jump On Board”: Designing For Female Consumers That Use Mobility Aids Based On Satisfaction With Retail Selection And Garment Design Characteristics, Mackenzie L. Miller

Honors College Theses

One in 4 people (85 million) in the United States has been diagnosed with a form of a disability, with 13.7 percent (44 million) having a mobility-related disability (CDC, 2020). Despite being the largest disability minority group in the US (CDC, 2020), the availability of clothes for pets is larger than the selection for people with disabilities (Ryan, 2018). The purpose of this qualitative study is to evaluate satisfaction of ready-to-wear and adaptive clothing among female consumers who use mobility aids. Fit issues, lack of availability, and lack of consideration for disability needs were found as overarching problems in both …

Abenomics’ Effect On Gender Inequality In Japanese Society And The Workplace, Arianna C. Johnson Mar 2021

Abenomics’ Effect On Gender Inequality In Japanese Society And The Workplace, Arianna C. Johnson

Honors College Theses

In this study, I determine the extent to which Japan’s shrinking workforce population has been affected by gender roles. Many Asian countries are experiencing a prominent decline in birth rate and population, which has increased global interest in these issues. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Japanese government officials have eagerly responded, pushing Japanese women into the labor force as a possible solution. However, this decision has unanticipated drawbacks, which require officials to address Japanese women’s concerns in and outside of the workplace. I argue that the Japanese government will have more success by addressing these needs, creating a more gender-equal …

Living Room Orchestra: Designing Embedded Furniture As A Family Of Electronic Musical Instruments, Matthew Scott Blessing Mar 2021

Living Room Orchestra: Designing Embedded Furniture As A Family Of Electronic Musical Instruments, Matthew Scott Blessing

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Musical Chairs is a project that explores ways to bring more music and sound art into people’s homes in an unobtrusive manner. In a world of embeddable technologies and Internets of Things, the home is getting increasingly “smarter” and not all things are as they once seemed–a refrigerator can tell you the weather, a smart speaker can order a dollhouse. By embedding musicality in everyday home objects, performable sonic beauty can be all around without requiring any dedicated space to hold instruments. One no longer requires a grand piano taking up space in order to host a Salon.

How Hbo's A Black Lady Sketch Show Utilizes Humor To Cope And Resist Against Racism And Sexism, Regina Lynnette Sanders

Theses and Dissertations

HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show is a sketch comedy series with a cast and crew of Black women. I draw on rhetorical scholarship from various traditions and Black Feminist Standpoint to analyze how the writers and performers use humor imbued with African American rhetoric to cope with and resist systematic racism and sexism in the United States of America. I begin by analyzing interviews with the creator Robin Thede. Then I analyze sketches and the intentional use of African American rhetoric, such as rhythm, stylin’, indirection, call and response, signification, and double word choice, which leads me to three …
