Test pattern generation is an electronic design automation tool that attempts to find an input (or test) sequence that, when applied to a digital circuit, enables one to distinguish between the correct circuit behavior and the faulty behavior caused by particular faults. The effectiveness of this classical method is measured by the fault coverage achieved for the fault model and the number of generated vectors, which should be directly proportional to test application time. Acoustic reflectometry, a non invasive technique, consists of solving, the inverse problem of estimating the cross sectional area as function of the distance of a cylindrical cavity by impacting an audible acoustic pulse of high amplitude and short duration, and analyzing the reflected wave. The technique has been applied in Biomedical Engineering to estimate both the area of a human upper airway and the patency of endotracheal tubes as a function of distance. We have proposed a temperature sensor fabricated using a bent SMS fiber structure. Our experimental results show, that by comparison to a sensor based on a straight SMS fiber structure, this temperature sensor has a much higher sensitivity of 31.97 pm/°C over a temperature range from 20 to 80 °C based on the measurement of the mean 3 dB wavelength shift and offers a resolution of 0.1 °C for temperature range from 45 to 80 °C when demodulated by a simple ratiometric interrogation technique.

The temperature dependence of polarization-dependent loss (PDL) for a macrobending standard single-mode fiber (SMF28) is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The experimental results show an overall agreement with the proposed theoretical model over a temperature range from 0 C to 70 C. An SMF28-based edge filter is used as an example regarding temperature- dependent PDL performance. It is shown that the temperature variations have a significant influence on the polarization dependence of macrobending loss, and further impact on such a fiber bend loss edge filter used in a wavelength measurement application. An experimental investigation on liquid crystal coated tapered photonic crystal fiber (PCF) interferometer is presented in this paper. The interferometer is fabricated by tapering a small section of a PCF by collapsing the air holes and thinning down the air hole collapsed region to a micron size. Several interferometers are fabricated from different types of photonic crystal fibers and the temperature dependence studies are carried out to select an intrinsically temperature insensitive interferometer that can be used with liquid crystal (LC) materials. The effects of the channel reliability factor on the performance of turbo decoders that use a maximum a posteriori probability algorithm are investigated for wireless communication fading channels, such as Bluetooth systems. The channel reliability factor is related to the channel signal-to-noise ratio. For various values of the channel reliability factor, the obtained performance curves of the maximum a posteriori probability algorithm are given for the case of DMx Bluetooth data packets. When the channel reliability factor increases, the bit-error-rate performance of the DMx Bluetooth data packets also increases over fading channels.

Coils in electric machines are varnished for insulation after winding. These varnished coils are formed in stiff construction in slots. Under heavy-duty operating conditions, all or part of some coils may be burnt or broken. Thermal method is one of several ways to remove the defective coils. In this method, current is passed through the defective coils by an autotransformer (variac) until all the varnish of the coils is burned. This paper presents a Least Absolute Value (LAV) state estimator for power system using a new method called Recursive Least Squares (RLS). Also, a suitable model is used for state estimation of power system that includes a Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC). The IEEE 14-bus test system is used to show the validity of the proposed algorithm in estimation of power system states as well as the states of controllable parameters of UPFC.

IIn this paper, we propose a new adaptive controller scheme for the bilateral telerobotic/teleoperation systems. The proposed controller achieves asymptotic tracking despite the parametric uncertainties associated with both master and slave robots while ensuring the passivity of the closed loop system. Extensive simulation studies are presented to illustrate the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed adaptive controller.

This paper presents the development of a new linear switched reluctance actuator and confirms its applicability to perform positioning tasks. After the explanation of the actuator working principle and the presentation of its electromechanical topology, an analysis is accomplished using a finite elements tool. Based on the theoretical results, an experimental prototype that can develop 150 N was constructed. Its behaviour is observed under two different control methods implemented with microcontrollers. Initially, position is controlled applying a single pulse-driving scheme. Meanwhile, significant improvements are obtained with the introduction of a sliding-mode controller, allowing movements with 1 mm of resolution.

Abstract: Photovoltaic (PV)-powered centrifugal water pumping systems have been modelled based on field experience and analysis of long-term measured performance of several installed PV-powered water pumping systems. This paper presents detailed modelling of a PV array, an inverter, a three-phase induction motor, a centrifugal pump, a well, a storage tank, an overflow controller, and an integrated reverse osmosis desalination unit. Hydrocarbon linked mesogenic dimers are found to exhibit an additional nematic phase below the conventional uniaxial nematic phase as confirmed by x-ray diffraction. The phase produces unusual periodic stripe domains in planar cells. The stripes are found to be parallel to the rubbing direction (in rubbed cells) with a well-defined period equal to double the cell gap. The stripes appear without external electromagnetic field, temperature or thickness gradients, rubbing or hybrid alignment treatments. Simple modeling proposes a negative sign for at least one of the two elastic constants: splay and twist, as a necessary condition for the observed pattern.

An approach is presented which provides the tune change loactions within a set of Irish traditional turnes. Also provided are semantic labels for each part of each tune within the set. A set in Irish traditional music is a number of individual tunes played segue. Each of the tunes in the set are made up of structural segments called parts. Often when performing glottal closed phase covariance linear prediction, a positive real pole can appear in the resulting filter transfer function. The commonly adopted approach is to discard this pole, as it does not fit with the usual model of the all-pole vocal tract filter.
