Fringe Visibility Enhanced Extrinsic Fabry-Perot Interferometer Using A Graded Index Fiber Collimator, Yinan Zhang, Yanjun Li, Tao Wei, Xinwei Lan, Ying Huang, Genda Chen, Hai Xiao

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We report a fringe visibility-enhanced extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI) by fusion splicing a quarter-pitch length of a graded-index fiber (GIF) to the lead-in single mode fiber (SMF). The performance of the GIF collimator is theoretically analyzed using a ray matrix model and experimentally verified through beam divergence angle measurements. The fringe visibility of the GIF-collimated EFPI is measured as a function of the cavity length and compared with that of a regular SMF-EFPI. At the cavity length of 500 μm, the fringe visibility of the GIF-EFPI is 0.8, while that of the SMF-EFPI is only 0.2. The visibility-enhanced GIF-EFPI may …

Software Algorithms To Coordinate And Improve Voltage Sag Ridethrough Capabilities Of Networked Industrial Processes, Owen Parks 2010 Clemson University

Software Algorithms To Coordinate And Improve Voltage Sag Ridethrough Capabilities Of Networked Industrial Processes, Owen Parks

All Dissertations

For those who design, operate, and troubleshoot industrial processes, electric power quality is a subject that requires much consideration. Processes that use electronic sensors, actuators, and computation devices are heavily reliant on a stable, consistent input power source. When a power quality event such as a voltage fluctuation occurs, automation equipment often behaves unpredictably and causes process malfunction or failure.
Because industrial power consumers often blame their electric utility for these events, some utilities offer process susceptibility studies as a service for their customers. During a typical study, utility technicians and engineers perform in-house tests on suspect components or systems …

Decentralized Coordination Of Multiple Autonomous Vehicles, Yongcan Cao

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This dissertation focuses on the study of decentralized coordination algorithms of multiple autonomous vehicles. Here, the term decentralized coordination is used to refer to the behavior that a group of vehicles reaches the desired group behavior via local interaction. Research is conducted towards designing and analyzing distributed coordination algorithms to achieve desired group behavior in the presence of none, one, and multiple group reference states.

Decentralized coordination in the absence of any group reference state is a very active research topic in the systems and controls society. We first focus on studying decentralized coordination problems for both single-integrator kinematics and …

Minimum Symbol Error Rate Timing Recovery System, Nagendra Bage Jayaraj 2010 Utah State University

Minimum Symbol Error Rate Timing Recovery System, Nagendra Bage Jayaraj

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This thesis presents a timing error detector (TED) used in the symbol timing synchronization subsystem for digital communications. The new timing error detector is designed to minimize the probability of symbol decision error, and it is called minimum symbol error rate TED (MSERTED). The new TED resembles the TED derived using the maximum likelihood (ML) criterion but gives rise to faster convergence relative to MLTED. The new TED requires shorter training sequences for symbol timing recovery. The TED operates on the outputs of the matched filter and estimates the timing offset. The S-curve is used as a tool for analyzing …

A Finite Domain Constraint Approach For Placement And Routing Of Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable Architectures, Rohit Saraswat

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Scheduling, placement, and routing are important steps in Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) design. Researchers have developed numerous techniques to solve placement and routing problems. As the complexity of Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) increased over the past decades, so did the demand for improved place and route techniques. The primary objective of these place and route approaches has typically been wirelength minimization due to its impact on signal delay and design performance. With the advent of Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), the same place and route techniques were applied to FPGA-based design. However, traditional place and route techniques may …

Integration of more communication standards in one microwave wireless device created a demand on developing compact, low-cost, and robust multi-band microwave components. This dissertation presents three studies for designing miniaturized and multi-band circuits that can be used for multi-band radio frequency (RF) front-ends. These three studies are the design of dual-band and tunable bandpass filters as well as dual- and triple-band equal-split power dividers/combiners. The dual-band filter is based on split ring resonators and double slit complemantary split ring resonators. A dual-band prototype three-stage Chebyshev filter, with a fractional bandwidth of 2% at 0.9 GHz and a fractional bandwidth of …

Micronetworking: Reliable Communication On 3d Integrated Circuits, Andres A. Contreras

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The potential failure in through-silicon vias (TSVs) still poses a challenge in trying to extend the useful life of a 3D integrated circuit (IC). A model is proposed to mitigate the communication problem in 3D integrated circuits caused by the breaks at the TSVs. We provide the details of a low-complexity network that takes advantages of redundant TSVs to make it possible to re-route around breaks and maintain effective communication between layers. Different configurations for the micronetwork are analyzed and discussed. We also present an evaluation of the micronetwork's performance, which turns out to be quite promising, based on several …

Computer Program And Method For Detecting And Predicting Valve Failure In A Reciprocating Compressor, Ming-Chuan Leu, Jagannathan Sarangapani, Raghuram Puthall Ramesh

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Embodiments of the present invention provide a method implemented by a computer program for detecting and identifying valve failure in a reciprocating compressor and further for predicting valve failure in the compressor. Embodiments of the present invention detect and predict the valve failure using wavelet analysis, logistic regression, and neural networks. A pressure signal from the valve of the reciprocating compressor presents a non-stationary waveform from which features can be extracted using wavelet packet decomposition. The extracted features, along with temperature data for the valve, are used to train a logistic regression model to classify defective and normal operation of …

An Efficient Implementation Of An Exponential Random Number Generator In A Field Programmable Gate Array (Fpga), Smitha Gautham 2010 Virginia Commonwealth University

An Efficient Implementation Of An Exponential Random Number Generator In A Field Programmable Gate Array (Fpga), Smitha Gautham

Theses and Dissertations

Many physical, biological, ecological and behavioral events occur at times and rates that are exponentially distributed. Modeling these systems requires simulators that can accurately generate a large quantity of exponentially distributed random numbers, which is a computationally intensive task. To improve the performance of these simulators, one approach is to move portions of the computationally inefficient simulation tasks from software to custom hardware implemented in Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). In this work, we study efficient FPGA implementations of exponentially distributed random number generators to improve simulator performance. Our approach is to generate uniformly distributed random numbers using standard techniques …

Sdm Propagation Model For Multiple Channels Using Ray Theory, Syed H. Murshid, Ebad Zahir, Abhijit Chakravarty 2010 Florida Institute of Technology

Sdm Propagation Model For Multiple Channels Using Ray Theory, Syed H. Murshid, Ebad Zahir, Abhijit Chakravarty

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Spatial Domain Multiplexing (SDM) is a novel optical fiber multiplexing technique where multiple channels of the same wavelength are launched at specific angles inside a standard step index multimode carrier fiber. These channels are confined to specific locations inside the fiber and they do not interfere with each other while traversing the length of the fiber. Spatial filtering techniques are employed at the output end to separate, route and process the individual channels. These skew ray channels inside the SDM system follow a helical trajectory along the fiber. The screen projection of the skew rays resembles a circular polygon. A …

Difference Between The Second-Brewster And Pseudo-Brewster Angles When Polarized Light Is Reflected At A Dielectric–Conductor Interface, A. Alsamman, R. M.A. Azzam 2010 University of New Orleans

Difference Between The Second-Brewster And Pseudo-Brewster Angles When Polarized Light Is Reflected At A Dielectric–Conductor Interface, A. Alsamman, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

For a given pseudo-Brewster angle ϕpB of minimum reflectance ∣∣rp∣∣ of p-polarized light at a dielectric-conductor interface, the second-Brewster angle ϕ2B of minimum reflectance ratio |ρ|=∣∣rp∣∣/|rs| of the p and s polarizations is determined for all possible values of the complex relative dielectric function ϵ that lead to the same ϕpB . The difference ϕ2B−ϕpB is considered as a function of ϕpB and θ=arg(ϵ) . For any given ϕpB , the difference ϕ2B−ϕpB=0 atθ=0(ϵr>0,ϵi=0) increases monotonically as a function of θ and reaches maximum value {ϕ2B−ϕpB}max in the limit as θ→180° (ϵr<0,ϵi=0) . This maximum difference {ϕ2B−ϕpB}max has an upper limit of 15.701° whenϕpB=28.195° .
