Chemical Technology, Control and Management
This study explores the application of an Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) for controlling wastewater treatment processes using ion-exchange resins. It addresses the critical challenges of water scarcity and pollution by enhancing the regulation of water hardness (H) and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS). Using a pilot laboratory device and experimental data from the mixed wastewater of the Kungrad Soda Plant in Uzbekistan, an ANFIS model was developed in MATLAB to automate process control. The model leverages water hardness and TDS as input parameters to regulate the water flow rate by servo valve opening degree, ensuring precise and efficient treatment. Compared …

Joint Estimation Of The State And Parameters Of Dynamic Control Objects Based On The Maine Estimator, Yulduz Abdurakhmanova
Chemical Technology, Control and Management
The issues of constructing an adaptive joint estimation of the state and parameters of dynamic control objects using the Maine estimator are considered. There are various variants of the extended filter, and a variant based on iterations between parameter and state estimates was used in the work. In this version of the extended Kalman filter, the problem of joint parameter and state estimation is solved in such a way that parameter estimation is performed before state estimation. Then, the parameter values are used to assess the state. In this case, further iterations between the state vector estimation and the parameter …

In this work, we report the observation of uncatalyzed ene reactions between several phenylpropanoid compounds and diethyl azodicarboxylate (DEAD). For allylbenzene, the reaction produces the ene product at molar ratios of up to 1:2 of allylbenzene to DEAD. At higher levels of DEAD, more complex reactions are observed. For the reaction between methyl eugenol and DEAD, similar ene reaction products have been found. However, the reaction of eugenol with DEAD is more complex; in addition to the ene reaction, other reactions happen at the same time. Most of the structures of the resulting products have been elucidated using NMR spectroscopy …

Solid electrolytes are critical for structural batteries, combining energy storage with structural strength for applications like electric vehicles and aerospace. However, achieving high ionic conductivity remains challenging, compounded by a lack of standardized testing methodologies. This study examines the impact of experimental setups and data interpretation methods on the measured ionic conductivities of solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs). SPEs were prepared using a polymer-induced phase separation process, resulting in a bi-continuous microstructure for improved ionic transport. Eight experimental rigs were evaluated, including two- and four-electrode setups with materials like stainless steel, copper, and aluminum. Ionic conductivity was assessed using electrochemical impedance …

Chemical separations are costly in terms of energy, time, and money. Separation methods are optimized with inefficient trial-and-error approaches that lack insight into the molecular dynamics that lead to the success or failure of a separation and, hence, ways to improve the process. We perform super-resolution imaging of fluorescent analytes in five different commercial liquid chromatography materials. Unexpectedly, we observe that chemical functionalization can block more than 50% of the material’s porous interior, rendering it inaccessible to small-molecule analytes. Only in situ imaging unveils the inaccessibility when compared to the industry-accepted ex situ characterization methods. Selectively removing some of the …

Enzymes play an essential role in many different industries; however, their operating conditions are limited due to the loss of enzyme activity in the presence of proteases and at temperatures significantly above physiological conditions. One way to improve the stability of these enzymes against high temperatures and proteases is to encapsulate them in protective shells or virus-like particles. This work presents a streamlined, three-step, cell-free protein synthesis (CFPS) procedure that enables rapid in vitro enzyme production, targeted encapsulation in protective virus-like particles (VLPs), and facile purification using a 6× His-tag fused to the VLP coat protein. This process is performed …

With the expanding use of polymers in additive manufacturing, sustainable resins for use in vat photopolymerization are required to reduce their environmental impact. One promising approach to achieve this is to incorporate biobased fillers that replace the acrylates in photopolymer resins as ‘green’ alternatives. In this study, photopolymer composites consisting of a methacrylate resin with varying calcium carbonate powder content between 0 and 50 wt.% were investigated. A digital light processing technique was used to fabricate tensile test specimens for mechanical testing. Good printability, dimensional accuracy, and good interlayer adhesion were observed for composite resin formulations that incorporated calcium carbonate …

The growing demand for viral vectors as nanoscale therapeutic agents in gene therapy necessitates efficient and scalable purification methods. This study examined the role of nanoscale biomaterials in optimizing viral vector clarification through a model system mimicking real AAV2 crude harvest material. Using lysed HEK293 cells and silica nanoparticles (20 nm) as surrogates for AAV2 crude harvest, we evaluated primary (depth filters) and secondary (membrane-based) filtration processes under different process parameters and solution conditions. These filtration systems were then assessed for their ability to recover nanoscale viral vectors while reducing DNA (without the need for endonuclease treatment), protein, and turbidity. …

Dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DMSNs), characterized by a high specific surface area and abundant hydroxyl groups, offer a promising approach to enhancing the performance of amphiphilic polymers in challenging enhanced oil recovery (EOR) conditions. In this study, DMSNs were successfully synthesized, and systematically evaluated for their impact on the solution properties of a betaine amphiphilic polymer (PADC). The unique "flower-like" mesoporous structure of DMSNs provided approximately 7-fold higher surface area than conventional SiO2, facilitating enhanced polymer-nanoparticle interactions. The DMSN/PADC composite system exhibited significantly improved viscosity, salt resistance, thermal tolerance, and shear resistance compared to PADC and SiO2/PADC systems. Quantum chemical …

The poor electronic conductivity of metal-organic framework (MOF) materials hinders their direct application in the field of electrocatalysis in fuel cells. Herein, we proposed a strategy of embedding carbon nanotubes (CNTs) during the growth process of MOF crystals, synthesizing a metalloporphyrin-based MOF catalyst TCPPCo-MOF-CNT with a unique CNT-intercalated MOF structure. Physical characterization revealed that the CNTs enhance the overall conductivity while retaining the original characteristics of the MOF and metalloporphyrin. Simultaneously, the insertion of CNTs generated adequate mesopores and created a hierarchical porous structure that enhances mass transfer efficiency. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis confirmed that the C atom in CNT …
