Greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions are widely related to climate change, triggering several environmental problems of global concern and producing environmental, social, and economic negative impacts. Therefore, global research seeks to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. On the other hand, the use of wastes under a circular economy scheme generates subproducts from the range of high to medium-value, representing away to help sustainable development. Therefore, the use of wastewater as a culture medium to grow microalgae strains that biocapture environmental CO2, is a proposal with high potential to reduce the GHG presence in the environment. In this work, Scenedesmus sp. …

Nebraska Center for Biotechnology: Faculty and Staff Publications

Abstract Lipid droplets (LDs) are composed of neutral lipids enclosed in a phospholipid monolayer, which harbors membrane-associated proteins that regulate LD functions. Despite the crucial role of LDs in lipid metabolism, remodeling of LD protein composition in disease contexts, such as steatosis, remains poorly understood. We hypothesized that chronic ethanol consumption, subsequent abstinence from ethanol, or fasting differentially affects the LD membrane proteome content and that these changes influence how LDs interact with other intracellular organelles. Here, male Wistar rats were pair-fed liquid control or ethanol diets for 6 weeks, and then, randomly chosen animals from both groups were either …

The Advanced Applications For Optical Coherence Tomography In Skin Imaging, Qiuyun Xu 2021 Wayne State University

The Advanced Applications For Optical Coherence Tomography In Skin Imaging, Qiuyun Xu

Wayne State University Dissertations

Optical coherence tomography (OCT), based on the principle of interferometry, is a fast and non-invasive imaging modality, which has been approved by FDA for dermatologic applications. OCT has high spatial resolution up to micrometer scale compared to traditional ultrasound imaging. In addition, OCT can provide real-time cross-sectional images with 1 to 2 mm penetration depth, which makes it an ideal imaging technique to assess the skin micro-morphology and pathology without any tissue removal. Many studies have investigated the possibilities of using OCT to evaluate dermatologic conditions, such as skin cancer, dermatitis, psoriasis, and skin damages. Hence, OCT has tremendous potential …

Multiparametric Quantitative Acoustic Imaging Of Cervical Remodeling During Pregnancy, Yan Yan 2021 Wayne State University

Multiparametric Quantitative Acoustic Imaging Of Cervical Remodeling During Pregnancy, Yan Yan

Wayne State University Dissertations

The uterine cervix plays a central role in the maintenance of pregnancy and the process of parturition. Untimely cervical ripening in early gestation predisposes to preterm labor and delivery, the leading cause of infant mortality worldwide. The current approach to evaluate the status of the cervix relies on digital and sonographic examination, which indicates the morphological changes of the cervix (cervical length). Therefore, assessing cervix tissue composition changes may provide more sensitive evaluations about cervix status beyond cervical length. Photoacoustic (PA) imaging is a relatively new, non-invasive ultrasound (US) based technology that captures acoustic signals emitted by tissue components in …

Targeting T Cell Glycolysis To Mitigate Graft-Versus-Host Disease, Kevin Ezhakunnel 2021 University of Central Florida

Targeting T Cell Glycolysis To Mitigate Graft-Versus-Host Disease, Kevin Ezhakunnel

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Hematological cancers account for nearly ten percent of cancer cases diagnosed annually in the United States. Patients who fail to respond to chemotherapy or radiotherapy must often undergo a bone marrow transplant to treat their malignancy. A significant complication following this procedure is Graft versus Host Disease (GvHD), which occurs when donor T cells mount an immune response against recipient tissues. Immunological research has highlighted the role of aberrant T cell metabolism, specifically a shift toward aerobic glycolysis, as a key driver behind the occurrence of this condition. The transcription factor FoxK1 has been revealed to be a key regulator …

Tracheal intubations are one of the most common surgeries that occur since they are necessary for most patients under anesthesia. Given the frequency, an error with a relatively low chance of occurring can still provide a large problem both for the patient and the hospital. We studied teeth damage that arise during tracheal intubations to determine if improvements could be made to the process to lower the chance of it occurring. Given this, we set out to improve the laryngoscope to provide a product with a novel approach that sweeps into the mouth from the left side before traveling the …

Analysis Of Graded Sensorimotor Rhythms For Brain-Computer Interface Applications, Chase Allen Haddix 2021 University of Kentucky

Analysis Of Graded Sensorimotor Rhythms For Brain-Computer Interface Applications, Chase Allen Haddix

Theses and Dissertations--Biomedical Engineering

The emerging field of neural engineering is tasked with applying engineering principles towards understanding neuroscience. A by-product of such a venture has been the development of a class of assistive devices known as brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) which link brain activity to actions performed by external devices. One application of this technology is in the rehabilitative sector for individuals with neuromuscular diseases and disorders. Despite tremendous efforts in the last few decades, a reliable signal that reflects fine motor control has yet to be adequately investigated. This gap in knowledge has limited the potential of BCIs to restore movement and communication. …

Scalable Approaches For Auditing The Completeness Of Biomedical Ontologies, Fengbo Zheng 2021 University of Kentucky

Scalable Approaches For Auditing The Completeness Of Biomedical Ontologies, Fengbo Zheng

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

An ontology provides a formalized representation of knowledge within a domain. In biomedicine, ontologies have been widely used in modern biomedical applications to enable semantic interoperability and facilitate data exchange. Given the important roles that biomedical ontologies play, quality issues such as incompleteness, if not addressed, can affect the quality of downstream ontology-driven applications. However, biomedical ontologies often have large sizes and complex structures. Thus, it is infeasible to uncover potential quality issues through manual effort. In this dissertation, we introduce automated and scalable approaches for auditing the completeness of biomedical ontologies. We mainly focus on two incompleteness issues -- …

Characterization Of Modulation And Coherence In Sensorimotor Rhythms Using Different Electroencephalographic Signal Derivations, Stephen Dundon 2021 University of Kentucky

Characterization Of Modulation And Coherence In Sensorimotor Rhythms Using Different Electroencephalographic Signal Derivations, Stephen Dundon

Theses and Dissertations--Biomedical Engineering

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a widely used technique for monitoring and analyzing brain activity in experimental, diagnostic, and therapeutic applications. Since EEG is sensitive to noise and artefact sources, referential signals at different locations can be combined in different ways to improve signal quality and better localize cortical activity. Four signal derivations were compared against referential EEG in terms of their ability to measure the alpha rhythm modulation (or reactivity) and spatial coherence associated with an eye closure task: a common average reference (CAR), a local average reference (LAR), a large Laplacian (LL), and a focal Laplacian (FL) estimated using a …

Work-Related Changes In The Trunk Stiffness Of Nursing Personnel, Clare Tyler 2021 University of Kentucky

Work-Related Changes In The Trunk Stiffness Of Nursing Personnel, Clare Tyler

Theses and Dissertations--Biomedical Engineering

Low back pain (LBP) is a significant issue related to spinal stability and, therefore, to trunk stiffness. Due to the nature of their work, nursing personnel are exposed to potential risk factors for LBP, such as lifting and trunk flexion, which have been reported in the literature to lead to decreases in trunk stiffness. Consequently, the purpose of this study was to investigate potential occupational effects on the trunk stiffness in nursing personnel. Twenty-four nursing personnel participated in this study and completed two sessions (pre-shift and post-shift) during which two passive flexion tests (with and without an ~7.5-lb load) were …

Low Frequency Oscillations Of Hemodynamic Parameters As A Novel Diagnostic Measure For Traumatic Brain Injury, Andrea Gomez Carrillo 2021 Wright State University

Low Frequency Oscillations Of Hemodynamic Parameters As A Novel Diagnostic Measure For Traumatic Brain Injury, Andrea Gomez Carrillo

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

There is a need to improve methods of monitoring patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) in hospital settings. Current monitoring techniques and diagnosis methods are expensive, invasive, do not provide continuous measures, expose the patient to radiation, are ambiguous in the information they provide, and/or cannot be implemented at the bedside. These techniques measure imperative markers of brain function including intracranial pressure (ICP), cerebral blood flow (CBF), and oxygenation in the brain, among others. Hospitals not only require a practical method for real-time monitoring of patients at the bedside, but also meaningful metrics that characterize TBIs, since the variety of …

Altered Skeletal Muscle Excitation-Contraction Coupling In The R6/2 Transgenic Mouse Model For Huntington's Disease, Daniel R. Miranda 2021 Wright State University

Altered Skeletal Muscle Excitation-Contraction Coupling In The R6/2 Transgenic Mouse Model For Huntington's Disease, Daniel R. Miranda

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Huntington’s disease (HD) has classically been categorized as a neurodegenerative disorder. However, the expression of the disease-causing mutated huntingtin gene in skeletal muscle may contribute to the symptoms of HD, namely those that involve involuntary muscle contraction. In the R6/2 transgenic mouse model of HD, we previously observed ion channel defects that could contribute to involuntary muscle contraction. Here, in R6/2 muscle we investigated the consequence of these ion channel defects on action potentials (APs), the first step in excitation-contraction (EC) coupling. We found that the ion channel defects were associated with depolarizing the baseline membrane potential during AP trains. …
