Fast pyrolysis of biomass is an attractive route to transform solid biomass into a liquid bio-oil, which has been envisioned as a renewable substitute for crude oil. However, lack of fundamental understanding of the pyrolysis process poses a significant challenge in developing cost-effective pyrolysis based technologies for producing transportation fuels. A John Deere 8530 IVT tractor (Waterloo, Iowa) with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that could be operated in automatic (CVT) or manual (fixed gear ratio) mode was tested for fuel consumption at a setpoint travel speed of 9 km·h‐1 with 17 different drawbar loads. Linear regression analysis results showed that with the throttle set to maximum in both transmission modes, operating the tractor with the transmission in the automatic mode was more fuel efficient than operating with the transmission in the manual mode when the drawbar power was approximately 78%, or less, of maximum power. Switchgrass and coastal bermudagrass are promising lignocellulosic feedstocks for bioethanol production. However, pretreatment of lignocelluloses is required to improve production of fermentable sugars from enzymatic hydrolysis. Microwave- based alkali pretreatment of switchgrass and coastal bermudagrass was investigated in this study. Pretreatments were carried out by immersing the biomass in dilute alkali reagents and exposing the slurry to microwave radiation at 250 W for residence times ranging from 5 to 20 min. Transgenic corn is capable of producing and storing Type I α1 human collagen (r-CIα1) containing a sequence that assists assembly (foldon) and the mature cleaved form (without foldon). Extracts of ground corn grain spiked with Pichia-sourced collagen (rP-CIα1), with and without foldon, were precipitated with NaCl to purify collagen from host cell proteins. The low acid solubility of host cell proteins (HCP's) along with the acid stability of collagen favored extraction at pH 2. Glycoside hydrolases (GH) are enzymes that hydrolyze glycosidic bonds between carbohydrates. Family 44 contains endo- and xylo- glucanases capable of hydrolyzing cellulose and hemicelluose. Two members produced by Clostridium acetobutylicum and Ruminococcus flavefaciens FD-1 are the subjects of characterization work in this dissertation.

The EG from Clostridium acetobutylicum was characterized both structurally and kinetically. Crystallization and x-ray diffraction to 2.2-y resolution revealed a TIM barrel-like structure with additional ψ-loop and β-sandwich folds. The EG hydrolyzes cellotetraose and larger cellooligosaccharides, as well as carboxymethylcellulose and xylan at approximately the same rates. Pyruvate is located at a metabolic junction of assimilatory and dissimilatory pathways and represents a switch point between respiratory and fermentative metabolism. In Escherichia coli, the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDHC) and pyruvate formate-lyase are considered the primary routes of pyruvate conversion to acetyl-CoA for aerobic respiration and anaerobic fermentation, respectively. The rate constants for the gas-phase reactions in the silicon carbide chemical vapor deposition of methyltrichlorosilane (Ge, Y. B.; Gordon, M. S.; Battaglia, F.; Fox, R. O. J. Phys. Chem. Transition state theory was applied to the reactions with a well-defined transition state; canonical variational transition state theory was applied to the barrierless reactions by finding the generalized transition state with the maximum Gibbs free energy along the reaction path. A quadrature-based moment model is derived for moderately dense polydisperse gas-particle flows starting from the inelastic Boltzmann-Enskog kinetic equation including terms for particle acceleration (e.g., gravity and fluid drag). The derivation is carried out for the joint number density function, f(t,x,m,u), of particle mass and velocity, and thus, the model can describe the transport of polydisperse particles with size and density differences. For titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles manufactured in flame reactors, the precursor is injected into a pre-existing flame, exposing it to a high-temperature gas phase, leading to nucleation and particle growth. Predictive modeling of this chemical process requires simultaneous development of detailed chemical mechanisms describing gas-phase combustion and particle evolution, as well as advanced computational tools for describing the turbulent flow field and its interactions with the chemical processes. We report the construction and testing of a chirped diffraction grating, which serves as a substrate for surface plasmon-enhanced optical transmission. This grating possesses a spatial variation in both pitch and amplitude along its surface. It was created by plasma oxidation of a curved poly(dimethoxysilane) sheet, which resulted in nonuniform buckling along the polymer surface. Thermochemical gasification is one of the most promising technologies for converting biomass into power, fuels and chemicals. The objectives of this study were to maximize the net energy efficiency for biomass gasification, and to estimate the cost of producing industrial gas and combined heat and power (CHP) at a feedrate of 2000 kg/h. Aspen Plus-based model for gasification was combined with a CHP generation model, and optimized using corn stover and dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) as the biomass feedstocks.
