No More Funeral Marches: How An Orchestra Conductor Is Using Music To Heal His City, Carolyn Brown
Capstones
In the wake of the Breonna Taylor grand jury decision, the city of Louisville became, as Louisville Orchestra conductor Teddy Abrams put it, "the epicenter of journalism." Abrams, the youngest conductor of a major orchestra in the United States, has hundreds of thousands of fans across the country. He's also an ardent political activist. By making the Orchestra's 2020 season virtual, diversifying their featured composers and works, and providing free one-on-one "comfort concerts" over Zoom, Abrams has been working to make the traditionally White space of classical music more inclusive, safe, and accessible. https://www.cebrownphoto.com/no-more-funeral-marches

Music Composition In The 17th And 18th Centuries: A Historical Analysis Of How Georg Frideric Handel Participated In “Borrowing”, Nicholas Mueller, Oscar Peterson-Veatch, Russell Schmidt
2020 Festschrift: Georg Frideric Handel's "Messiah"
The primary focus in this research paper is borrowing; this means borrowing from other composers, and self-borrowing from a previous composition. It is widely accepted in scholarship that Georg Frideric Handel participated in the action of borrowing. However, there is significantly more contention among scholars surrounding both the extent of Handel’s borrowing, as well as what the appropriate modern perspective is for these actions. In this research paper our primary focus will be on Handel’s borrowings, the benefits he received from these actions, and the historical lens of borrowing in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Turning to the study of piano ensemble music by György Ligeti (1923-2006), the authors focus on piano pieces in four hands that date back to the early period of the leader of the modern musical avant-garde, revealing their artistic world, reflecting the composer's aesthetics. The aim is to study Ligeti's works for piano in four hands, revealing their stylistic features. The musical material for the study is original miniatures for the four-handed piano (March and Three Wedding Dances), in which the composer's innovative style …

In this paper, I will be addressing the main factors which influenced Bruce Springsteen’s career and songwriting, specifically regarding interpersonal relationships the singer has had and how that is evident in his work thus far. I will be relating that concept to his latest album release, “Letter to You” by analyzing track by track and attempting to find that common thread of connection that seems to speak so well to him and his audience.

Lost In Translation: A Critical Analysis Of The Libretto In Handel's Messiah, Jordan Lehto, Aaron Escamilla, Eden H. Nimietz
2020 Festschrift: Georg Frideric Handel's "Messiah"
Handel’s Messiah is renowned for its lush sound and richly developed message regarding the rejoicing of Christians and the celebration of religion through their faith in a divine savior. Not only is the full oratorio performed by countless ensembles every year, but many scholars have spent months, and even years, poring over its libretto. The conclusions they have come up with regarding the intentions of the librettist, Charles Jennens, have sparked much controversy over the years. Because of Jennens’ personal, religious beliefs, many scholars are concerned that much of his libretto is designed to discredit all other religions and proclaim …

Composers can meet fame in their lives and after death, but no composer has garnered the extent of fame George Frideric Handel did after death. Handel reached an abundance of success in various cities before his death, and even more success in new cities and a new continent after he passed. His fame after death was kept alive through his audience’s efforts to celebrate, perform, and preserve his works millenniums after his death.

New Perspectives On Johannes De Muris And His Notitia Artis Musicae, Jeffrey Allan Arnsdorf
Dissertations and Theses
At the end of the 1310s, Norman mathematician and astronomer Johannes de Muris (c. 1295-after 1344) reconceived the existing musical notation system on a mathematical foundation. His Notitia artis musicae dramatically increased the fidelity with which the system could represent complex rhythmic patterns. In recent years, musicologists, particularly Karen Desmond, have begun to incorporate the scholarship of historians of astronomy in their work on Muris and the Notitia. These studies take as their focus conceptual shifts in music theory and practice. This thesis repositions the perspective to Muris himself, seeking to shed light on his intention in writing the …

The Ontological Status Of Sound Recording: An Artistic Blend Between Documentation And Sonic Aesthetics, Gaute Barlindhaug
Proceedings from the Document Academy
This paper discusses how different ways of defining the ontological status of recorded sound have developed throughout the 20th century. My claim is that even within the period of analog technology, sound recording was moving away from its purposes of preserving and documenting real life musical performances. I will illustrate this by using three different examples. First, I will look at how John and Alan Lomax´s folkloristic documentation of blues music in the 1930s changed the very culture they documented by introducing a new medium that enabled the sharing and dissemination of music beyond the word of mouth. Secondly, I …

Twentieth Century Organ Works As Pedagogical Devices: Using Select Compositions By Hermann Schroeder, Jean Langlais, And Daniel Pinkham As Teaching Tools For The Beginning Organ Student, Mary-Katherine Fletcher

Countless teaching methods, articles, and books have been written about organ pedagogy. But even with so many options from which to choose, a few of these have emerged as some of the most frequently used teaching materials for beginning organ students.
