System Of Shadows, An Interactive Performance Environment For Trumpet/Flugelhorn And Kyma, Brian Belet, Stephen Ruppenthal

Faculty Publications

This paper summarizes our history with designing coherent real-time processing algorithms within Kyma that enable the spontaneous processing of acoustic instruments using the Capybara-320 and Pacarana synthesis engines in interactive real-time performance. Compositional and performance issues for the current work, System of Shadows, are examined, discussed, and performed during the demonstration, focusing on the composer’s Kyma processing algorithms and the musical score used by both performers. We posit relevant data surrounding the interactive performance issues involved in a complex real-time processing work of this nature, and discuss our collaborative creative process. Real-time performance choices by the trumpeter, directed improvisation and …

“I’Ll Fly Away”: The Music And Career Of Albert E. Brumley, Kevin Donald Kehrberg 2010 University of Kentucky

“I’Ll Fly Away”: The Music And Career Of Albert E. Brumley, Kevin Donald Kehrberg

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Albert E. Brumley (1905-1977) was the most influential American gospel song composer of the twentieth century, penning such “classics” within the genre as “Jesus, Hold My Hand,” “I’ll Meet You in the Morning,” “If We Never Meet Again,” “Turn Your Radio On,” and “Rank Strangers to Me.” His “I’ll Fly Away” has become the most recorded gospel song in American history with over one thousand recordings to date, and several of his works transcend cultural boundaries of style, genre, race, denomination, and doctrine. However, the racialized historiography of American gospel music has left Brumley—from America’s lesser-known white gospel traditions of …

Challenges Of Technique And Interpretation In The Percussion Music Of Fredrik Andersson: A Performer’S Analysis, Kyle Manning Forsthoff 2010 University of Kentucky

Challenges Of Technique And Interpretation In The Percussion Music Of Fredrik Andersson: A Performer’S Analysis, Kyle Manning Forsthoff

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

In the mid 1990s, Swedish composer Fredrik Andersson composed not everything which happens is in the newspaper (1993), the lonelyness of Santa Claus (1994), and imagine there was nothing (1996). All three pieces share a number of compositional and stylistic elements while emphasizing the capabilities of their respective instrumentations to create mysterious sonic worlds that are unique in the percussion idiom. By examining specific concerns of each piece in detail, an understanding of Andersson’s presentation of musical challenges will result. Acceptable solutions to such challenges will be examined and compared, based primarily on the author’s analysis and experience encompassing multiple …

Creating Salsa, Claiming Salsa: Identity, Location, And Authenticity In Global Popular Music, William Guthrie LeGrand 2010 University of Northern Iowa

Creating Salsa, Claiming Salsa: Identity, Location, And Authenticity In Global Popular Music, William Guthrie Legrand

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Although Latin American ethnomusicological scholarship in the last twenty years has addressed much of the Caribbean, particularly Cuba, the popular genre salsa has often been treated as a side project of scholars with other specialties. Much of previous Latin American scholarship has favored nation-based, particularly folkloric, genres, while current trends have largely moved toward either re-engaging nation-based scholarship within postmodern critical contexts or addressing reggaeton as part of the scholarly fascination with global hip-hop culture. Salsa, which has always been created, contested, and claimed. through transnational/global routes, has therefore often been marginalized through its continued association with Latin American musical …

Tuba Solo Discography: A Comprehensive Guide To Solo Literature Recordings Released On Compact Disc, Brian Gallion

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This monograph provides a comprehensive discography of solo tuba works publicly released on compact disc. It is intended to aid tuba students, teachers, professionals, amateurs, and other enthusiasts in their search for recordings of solo literature. The project encompasses recordings released between 1982 (the year compact discs were invented) and the present. While previous attempts to catalogue tuba recordings have been made by other authors, those documents have certain limitations which this project corrects. Included in this discography are 317 total recordings, 145 of which were not included in any previous attempt. Of these 145, at least sixty-three were released …

An Overview Of The Choral Music Of Michael Mcglynn With A Conductor's Preparatory Guide To His Celtic Mass, Karen Marrolli 2010 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

An Overview Of The Choral Music Of Michael Mcglynn With A Conductor's Preparatory Guide To His Celtic Mass, Karen Marrolli

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Michael McGlynn, Irish composer and director of the choral group Anúna, is a fresh and engaging voice in the world of choral music. This paper delves into the sacred and secular works of Michael McGlynn to yield a clearer understanding of the style of this unique composer and the performance issues inherent in McGlynn’s Celtic Mass, an extended work for chorus, strings, harp, and percussion. Correspondence with the composer and examination of a representative cross section of his works revealed a number of influences, from Medieval music to the traditional music of McGlynn’s Irish homeland. McGlynn’s compositions range from chant …

"Chromatic Fantasy Sonata" By Davide Brubeck, Vasil Atanasov Cvetkov 2010 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

"Chromatic Fantasy Sonata" By Davide Brubeck, Vasil Atanasov Cvetkov

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Dave Brubeck (b. 1920) is best known as a jazz composer, pianist, and bandleader, but he has also composed dozens of works that reach beyond the realm of jazz. His Chromatic Fantasy Sonata represents a milestone in his compositional activity, artfully fusing elements from European art music and the American jazz idiom. The work's subtitle ("inspired by J. S. Bach") makes clear the influence of the Baroque master, but gives no hint of the thoroughgoing jazz influences Brubeck also included in the piece. The Chromatic Fantasy Sonata was originally commissioned in 1988 by the chamber group An die Musik (oboe, …
