A Student Tubist's Guide To Doubling On Bass Trombone, Donovan Klutho
Honors Program Theses
The purpose of this project is to provide high school-aged tuba students a brief resource for learning to double on the bass trombone. As will be discussed in the guidebook, there are a number of reasons that students could want to double: jazz band, pit orchestra, show choir band, classical concert ensemble, etc. No matter the reason a student may want to learn to double, I wanted to provide a guide that would hopefully make it more accessible for them to learn. To accomplish this, I have made the language digestible for high schoolers without too many technical terms.

The Five Degrees
The glance, the look.
The arms that open wide
to hold the moment - Melancholy Nights - and the kiss
in time. And then beyond.
To glance, to look. Again.
Melancholy Nights
City lights they all astound me,
and the noises still confound me
since you've gone, it's been so long
I can't recall a single song to take—
nights that always …

Exploring A Compositional Practice Through The Lens Of The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto, Jie Hong Yang
Theses : Honours
Asian music was an important influence upon some Western composers such as Claude Debussy, Giacomo Puccini, Maurice Ravel, Henry Cowell, Oliver Messiaen, John Cage and Lou Harrison. Since the 1960s, Australian composers such as Peter Sculthorpe, Anne Boyd, Richard Meale, and Julian Yu have similarly been influenced by music of Asia. In 2007, Chou Wen-chung wrote about today’s commercially oriented ‘world music’ environment, and addressed the need for Chinese composers to provide more meaningful contribution to the musical culture by writing music informed by knowledge drawn from their cultural heritage. As an Australian born Chinese composer, this exegesis was an …

Design, Sound And Compositional Aesthetic: The Grand Piano In Late Eighteenth-Century London And Vienna, Izaac Masters
Theses : Honours
During the late eighteenth century, the piano was the dominant musical instrument for musical composition, performance and instrument making. There were many innovations in the design, sound and touch of the piano, fuelling the emergence of a large body of idiomatic repertoire. Two distinct traditions of piano design emerged at the same time during the late eighteenth century, one in England and the other in Austria. The focal points of these traditions were, respectively, London and Vienna where resident composers in each of these locations wrote for the instruments made in these cities. Traditions of grand piano design in London …

Singing Difference Amid Relational Connectedness: A Narrative Study Of How Singing Together Shapes Worldview, Debbie Lou Ludolph
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The experience of singing together holds the potential to constrain or set free the imagination to shape worldview. Undergirded by Walter Brueggemann’s argument that a contest of narratives exists in twenty-first century North American church and society, the researcher draws from Mary (Joy) Philip’s call for “in-between space” created by safe haven and adjacency and Lee Higgins’ “boundary-walking” to understand the place of difference in a theological orientation to community singing practice. Rooted in a narrative paradigm and undergirded by an interdisciplinary approach, this inquiry explores the storied lives of sixteen singers in a faith-based singing community called Inshallah to …

Protest Music Of The 2010s, Tumaini Sango
McNair Scholars Manuscripts
Throughout U.S. history, music has served as a soundtrack to transformative social and cultural movements. Songs like “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” “Lift every Voice and Sing,” and “We Shall Overcome” are linked to key events that inspired hope and change. Collectively, these songs are known as protest music. Protest music can act as a type of social commentary, expressing a wide range of emotions, and have a uniting element, calling leaders and groups to action for tangible results. At its core, protest music is a musician’s creative response to events happening in the world around them. The 2010s saw the …

Through a phenomenological investigation, the lived experiences of two music therapists who align with the improvisational music therapy approach were studied. A thematic analysis was conducted on data sources such as qualitative interview transcriptions and audio/video recordings of the interview. The following individual themes emerged from participant one: (a) flow …
