Diagnoses of madness are inextricably entwined with social and cultural beliefs about gender and sexual behavior. The portrayal of characters in music theater as mad relies on contemporaneous understanding of mental illness, as often resulting from, or expressed in transgression of normative gender roles or heteronormativity, and this may apply either to male or female characters. Such transgressions are explored--with regard to recent reconceptualizations of madness within Disability Studies--in four works: Arnold Schoenberg's monodrama Erwartung (1924); Richard Strauss's opera Salome (1905); Kurt Weill's ballet chanté, Anna-Anna (1933), also known as The Seven Deadly Sins; and Igor Stravinsky's neo-classical …

School-aged females with Asperger's Disorder (AD) are significantly affected by debilitating anxiety. At present, no empirically validated treatments exist to treat this anxiety. To investigate this affect and treatment gap, a mixed-methods revelatory single-case design, built on evidence-based treatment elements was designed and tested. Solo pianist, David Helfgott rated, performed and provided musical performances by Louis Moreau Gottschalk and Claude Debussy which were listened to once each morning before school by a 10-year-old female with AD. Anxiety was recorded via a self-report Daily Journal and parent-report Spence Child Anxiety Scale for 20 consecutive school days. Results indicated support for the …

Copyright offers tight control over intellectual property while Creative Commons deliberately relaxes this control; this relaxed control provides an artist with an alternative marketing strategy as well as a secure electronic distribution method. Copyright has been a useful tool for controlling intellectual property since its inception in 1710, but new developments in distribution of copyrighted materials has provided new challenges for copyright law. The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate and document a research project undertaken in the designing, constructing and performing of an interactive music system. The project involved building a multi-user electro-acoustic music instrument with a tangible user interface, based on the technology of the reacTable. This dissertation aims to bring to light, and to categorise, the music for trumpet and cornetto contained in the great manuscript collection at Uppsala University, the so-called Düben collection. The dissertation will divide into four clear sections. After an introductory chapter on the Düben collection itself, chapter two will give an overview of the trumpet and cornetto music contained therein. Throughout the 20th century, the performance practice of baroque music has undergone many stylistic changes. Moreover, the rich resources of primary source material available to us in musical recordings of the period have only recently been realised. Bruce Haynes, in his book The End of Early Music, suggests that the twentieth century saw three principal schools of performance: romantic, modernist, and historically-informed. This study investigates Haynes' hypothesis through a comparison of fourteen recordings of Bach's Solo Violin Sonata in A minor BWV 1003, ranging from 1933 to 1999. This Dissertation explores how the evolution of social media is enabling Irish Independent music artists to publicise their music. It aims to explore the online public relations techniques that Independent Irish music artists are using and determine whether they are embracing it.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of directing participant (N = 60) attention to one voice in three-part homophonic and polyphonic instrumental music on music majors’ detection of pitch and rhythm errors. Directed attention participants studied one voice prior to studying the entire score through either visual or aural methods. Visual group participants (n = 20) studied the voice of directed attention (VDA), which was color highlighted, in silence. The subject of this dissertation is rarely performed tenor arias from operas of Gaetano Donizetti. Each of the arias chosen for this document was selected on the basis of its quality within the canon of Donizetti’s works in contrast with its deficient representation in the repertoire of the majority of student tenors. This document’s purpose is not to represent Donizetti’s development stylistically, dramatically, or in any other respect.
