Music As Complementary And Alternative Medicine (Cam) Therapy: An Exploratory Literature Review, Amy Arlene Clary

Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is a broad term for treatment plans outside of conventional therapy or conventional medicine.1 The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) divides CAM therapies into three categories “Natural Products,” “Mind and Body,” and “Other Complementary Health Approaches.” The NCCIH places music in the category “Mind and Body.” This exploratory literature review provides a comprehensive review of the various ways music is being studied for its psychological, sociological, and physiological benefits.

Throughout the history of piano playing as an art form, various performers, teachers, and theorists have written treatises as a means of conveying their thoughts on interpretation, education, and technique. As the Romantic tradition of pianism peaked in the early- to mid-20th century, three particular treatises were written that continue to have a major impact upon pianistic thought. These were Basic Principles in Pianoforte Playing by Josef Lhevinne, Piano Technique by Karl Leimer, and The Art of Piano Playing by Heinrich Neuhaus.

Concerto for Trumpet and Strings by Edward Gregson is a substantial work of the late twentieth century underperformed among trumpet players. The primary reasons for its relative neglect are its technical challenges and the demands of endurance it places on the player. A well-designed approach to the preparation of this work will benefit students and professional players wishing to prepare for a performance of the work. This project will combine the knowledge of researchers and teachers in formulating specific practice approaches for the concerto’s challenges.

Nocturnes have remained in the standard piano literature for over two hundred years. However, students may not study this genre of repertoire until the advanced level of playing, and might therefore lack the full skills or knowledge necessary for successful nocturne performance. The purpose of this study is to provide a current, comprehensive, didactic resource on Romantic-style pedagogical piano nocturne literature from early elementary to early advanced levels, to aid teachers in the education of their students.

This article investigates the affordability and feasibility of conducting virtual piano lessons for the college level learner. It proposes an approach that works well and requires equipment costing approximately $300 per student. We outline the pros and cons of conducting virtual piano lessons online. The main benefit is overcoming geographical distances, whereas limitations include challenges such as the instructor being able to check issues such as fingerings or dynamics. Latency is not a major problem as long as only one person is playing at any given time, as found in past work. The process of teaching and learning online requires …

John Kratus’ 2019 Music Educators Journal article "A Return to Amateurism in Music Education" contained what many may interpret as radical ideas to focus music education curriculum and instruction on amateurism. But upon further research, leaders within the profession have consistently affirmed the goals of amateurism. The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare themes of Kratus’ concept of amateurism with declarative statements of the two most recent National Association for Music Education leadership summits, which charted the profession's future. The use of the ukulele in classrooms and communities is growing, and, as a result, so is meaningful musical engagement from people of all ages. In this collective case study, I described the perspectives of three different music teachers and discussed how they implement the ukulele in diverse settings. Research questions were (a) what factors influence participants while creating ukulele groups or lessons, (b) how do participants use ukuleles in their classrooms, (c) what are participants' perceptions of the ukulele's value, and (d) what are participants' perceptions of students' interest in learning the ukulele? Since the completion of Ysaÿe’s Six Sonatas for the Solo Violin in 1923, performances of this important work in the violin literature have continually been well received by the public. This collection is frequently compared with J.S. Bach’s Six Sonatas and Partitas for the Solo Violin, because of the clear connection between these two works. Each of Ysaÿe’s pieces were dedicated to six younger violinist contemporaries and were composed in consideration of the character of the dedicatee, forming a kaleidoscope of musical and technical delights for both the performer and their audience.

These program notes originally accompanied a performance of three vocal pieces: Deep River, On Jordan's Stormy Banks, and Poor Wayfaring Stranger. The notes analyze the role of the Jordan river in each piece, focusing on their historical context, first performances, and issues of authorship. As part of a performing arts research project, the program notes also address the method of expression and creative process that went into preparing the performance of these pieces.

Rhythm is a foundational element for a child’s development. Rhythm builds motor skills, aids in language acquisition, and is at the root of all musical experience. While the concept of rhythm is universal, there is no universal approach that educators agree best helps students develop rhythmic ability. This research seeks to discover the most common research-based methods and better practices for elementary rhythm instruction and align each to current national music standards and expectations.

The Bordogni Jazz Project are arrangements of eight Bordogni Vocalises using harmonic and rhythmic elements from the jazz style, and new, original etudes that were composed based on the reharmonizations of the original Bordogni etude melodies. The material is intended to provide a comprehensive, but attainable resource for trombonists and educators which is inclusive of the stylistic nuances, performance practices, and cultural backgrounds associated with the jazz idiom. Developing Variation In The Late Work Of Morton Gould And Why It Matters, J. Wesley Flinn

American composer Morton Gould (1913-1996) was remarkably consistent stylistically over the course of his compositional career; this project examines certain motivic transformational techniques used in two of his last works, Stringmusic (1993, winner of the Pulitzer Prize) and Remembrance Day (Soliloquy for a Passing Century) (1995). These techniques, which can generally be filed under the principle of developing variation, are: 1. Mirroring and reversal; 2. Rotation; 3. Motivic expansion and contraction; 4. Additive sets; and 5.
