Abstract

The notion of burnout was first introduced by researchers Herbert Freudenberger (1974) and Christina Maslach (1976) to address staff challenges in medical and other “helping” professions (e.g., caregivers). According to Maslach and Leiter (1981), burnout consists of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a reduced sense of personal accomplishment. Many post-secondary students participate in campus organizations as a relief from burnout, experiencing community, heightened self-efficacy, and increased confidence (Buckley & Lee, 2018; Knifsend, 2018). This study explored the role of athletic bands at highly selective universities with Division 1 FBS athletics, considering how directors navigate recruitment, admissions, access, and community engagement within academically constraining environments. By integrating Kingdon's Multiple Streams Framework (MSF) and Ribot and Peluso’s Theory of Access, the study examined the agency of athletic band directors (ABDs) as policy practitioners who advocate for their programs, their students, and prospective students in the face of institutional barriers. Five themes emerged: athletic band accessibility, overcoming structural adversity, cross-campus collaboration, community engagement, and institutional displacement. In this article, I grapple with the internalized ableism I have been navigating upon becoming disabled in 2023. The task of this article is to consider the external forces that shape our ideas about disability with particular attention to socialization processes and larger oppressive systems such as neoliberalism. I specifically consider the messages that different representations, ideologies, and structures communicate to the population at large about disability in order to address why these messages are so often internalized in detrimental ways. AI-driven audio tools are reshaping musical creation, yet the most consequential shift is not automation of artistry but reconfiguration of collaboration, metacognition, and quality control within large ensembles. This paper examines how generative audio models, vocal synthesis platforms, and stem-splitting technologies can function as creative partners in music arranging and composition workflows, particularly in musical contexts where artistic coordination and interpretive judgment remain paramount. We position AI in music creation as analogous to the calculator in mathematics: widely available, efficiency-enhancing, and therefore unavoidable, while still requiring disciplined human oversight to preserve intent, style, and accountability. This study examines the pedagogical exploration of Joseph Haydn’s early keyboard sonatas, Sonata No. 7 in C Major (Hob. XVI:7), Sonata No. 8 in G Major (Hob. XVI:8), and Sonata No. 11 in G Major (Hob. XVI:11). These Sonatas target intermediate-level piano students. In this study, I am going to explore Classical-era techniques, including articulation, phrasing, dynamic contrast, and ornamentation, which mainly focus on technical and musical challenges. This study highlights the development of important skills for more advanced repertoire.

This project aims to curate a piccolo resource guide for high school music educators and their students. Currently, there are limited pedagogical materials available for beginning piccoloists or their music educators, and these materials are primarily scattered across decades of The Instrumentalist and the now-defunct Flute Talk journals. In addition, future band directors are rarely required to study auxiliary instruments like the piccolo in their collegiate coursework. This reflective article examines the limitations of control-based approaches in traditional vocal training and proposes a shift toward understanding the voice as an integrated, coordinated bodily system. Drawing on personal experience, the author highlights how common instructional language - focused on outcomes such as resonance, support, and projection - often leads singers to apply excessive effort, resulting in tension, inefficiency, and vocal strain. This field article introduces The Secret Science of Songs, a research-informed, practice-based framework that reconceptualizes songs as powerful, transdisciplinary tools in early childhood education. Drawing on over 40 years of classroom-based action research alongside established findings in cognitive science and music perception, the framework argues that young children’s engagement with songs is rooted not primarily in performance skill, but in their innate capacity to perceive and process auditory patterns in music and language. These pattern-based experiences constitute a rich aesthetic and cognitive domain through which children construct meaning, long before mastery of melody or verbal precision emerges.

There is a current literature gap in applied behavior analysis (ABA) and music-based leisure activities. This study utilized a multiple-probe design to evaluate the effects of visual supports on the guitar fretboard combined with behavioral skills training (BST) to teach correct strumming and finger placement of three guitar chords (i.e., E, C, and G) to a neurodivergent adult. By using a task analysis, the strum and each individual finger placement were scored as correct or incorrect during each chord trial. Chamber ensembles are a valuable tool in music education. However, these ensembles are often overlooked or omitted from the school band program. These ensembles promote individual growth in multiple ways, boosting confidence, independence, reliability, and musicianship. While there already exists extensive repertoire covering the many different types of chamber ensembles, appropriate and diverse music geared towards younger clarinet trios can be very difficult to find.

Gendered Discourses And Classed Access Routes For Feminist Djs In Irish Subcultural Scenes, Andrea Cleary

This article examines feminist collectives in Ireland’s electronic/dance music (E/DM) and music technology (MT) scenes, focusing on how gender and class intersect to shape access and participation. Drawing on thematic analysis of interviews with five collective members active between 2016 and 2025, it traces paths to participation from "musical homes" to instrument education to university DJ societies. To do this, it examines the overlapping family, cultural and subcultural capitals which shaped their journeys. Finally, this article considers the role of feminist collectives in creating alternative educational spaces and networks for women and gender minority participation in E/DM cultures.

While elementary music programs often foster language development and social awareness, secondary music instruction tends to emphasize performance skills and technical development. The explicit secondary orchestra curriculum for this middle school includes only instrument skill-development standards and learning-target descriptions.
