This thesis reflects upon a director’s experience while directing her first production: Sticky Notes and Bible Quotes: Godly Answers for Sticky Situations by Dennis and Nan Allen. This children’s musical was produced in cooperation with Wylie United Methodist Church of Abilene, TX. Over forty children, with the help of ten adult volunteers, shared the importance of memorizing scripture and looking to God’s Word in times of trouble through song, skits, and the recitation of scripture. A lecture recital is a quintessential representation of the music student’s knowledge and skill in a synthesis of performance and instruction. This thesis will encompass the extensive research and preparation necessary to perform a lecture recital about Robert Schumann’s song cycle Frauenliebe und Leben (A Woman’s Love and Life). This marvelous work is an excellent example of Schumann’s enhancement of the song cycle genre. A standard work in soprano repertoire, Frauenliebe und Leben provides the opportunity for extensive musicality through vocal coloring, legato lines, ornamented turns, various phrasal structures, and clear dramatic direction. Many musical styles around the world have been born from struggle and search for cultural identity. The same idea applies to Jazz and the Afro-Caribbean music created within the African diaspora and influenced by Latin and European styles in the United States. More recently, the meaning of diaspora has been used to refer to a group of people and some aspects of their culture (Rivera 2010, 104). This final project synthesized discussion and learning from four different books: "To Teach: The Journey in Comics" by W. Ayers and R. Alexander-Tanner, "Musician and Teacher: An Orientation to Music Education" by P. S. Campbell, "Teaching as a Subversive Activity" by N. Postman and C. Weingartner, and "Pedagogy of the Oppressed" by P. Freire. Through a series of letters to a teacher, Mr. Carter, the letter writers demonstrate the important ideas presented in each of the books.

Among educators and philosophers alike, critical dialogue is widely regarded as one of the most effective ways to communicate and educate in the classroom. In his quintessential work, Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Paulo Freire reflects upon the importance of dialogue stating, “Only dialogue, which requires critical thinking, is also capable of generating critical thinking. Without dialogue, there is no communication, and without communication there can be no true education.” This point is reinforced in other notable texts such as Teaching as a Subversive Activity, which describes the “new education” as not only student and question centered, but “language-centered” as well. …

How can we conceptualize curriculum and school knowledge to better address important questions of social change, contingency of knowledge, life in mediated worlds, and inequalities? To answer this question I wrote fictional stories from students about their favorite moments from their 8th grade music class. Each account deals with a specific activity or instance in which the teacher included social change and/or student centered knowledge in the curriculum. The explanation at the end of the accounts details the reasons for creating each activity and the relation of the stories to texts utilized in class.

As we approach the twenty-first century, the world generally is moving away from the dominance of the European aesthetic towards a world music that owes much to the musical resources of the African-American tradition. Jamaica’s social and philosophical music belong mainly to that tradition, which includes the use of rhythms, and timbral and melodic resources that exist independently of harmony. Already in this century, Jamaicans have created two totally new music - Nyabinghi, which performs a philosophical function and Reggae, which performs a social function. The purposes of this study were to (1) describe educational psychology course offerings within undergraduate music teacher training programs at National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) accredited institutions and (2) to examine the emphasis of common educational psychology topics in music methods courses. In order to better inform band directors and administrators on effective methods of increasing retention in beginning band, Glover explored the impact of how instructional time is allotted and structured on enrollment and subsequent retention among beginning band students in middle school and junior high schools in the state of Arkansas. Lines of inquiry in the online questionnaire completed by beginning band directors (n=45) included describing and analyzing different instructional time structures within beginning band programs, discussing who in public schools systems makes decisions about these structures, and questioning band directors about personal perceptions of program structures and retention practices …

The purpose of this study was to evaluate how effectively current high school orchestra directors demonstrate the elements of conducting. To do this, I first selected what elements of conducting would be evaluated and then defined what is effective for each. From this, I created a conductor evaluation form consisting of a 1-Not Effective to 5-Effective rating scale to score how effectively each element is demonstrated. The results would later address the primary research questions:
